1. Quick Reference

Wraith Walk Build (talent calculator link)

Level 1 Consume Vitality Icon
Level 4 Kneel, Peasants! Icon
Level 7 Hopelessness Icon
Level 10 Entomb Icon
Level 13 Ominous Wraith Icon
Level 16 Royal Focus Icon
Level 20 Buried Alive Icon

The Wraith Walk Build provides a powerful and unique playstyle that allows Leoric to severly cripple the enemy team's combat performance while diving deep into the enemy team's backline using Wraith Walk Icon Wraith Walk. Hitting hostile Assassins and Warriors over and over again reducing their damage by 50% allows the rest of your team to seize the initiative. At Level 20 Buried Alive Icon Buried Alive becomes a really powerful talent that allows you to trap and silence targets, which can single-handedly decide the outcome of late game team fights.

Life Leech Build (talent calculator link)

Level 1 Consume Vitality Icon
Level 4 Kneel, Peasants! Icon
Level 7 Willing Vessel Icon
Level 10 March of the Black King Icon
Level 13 Hardened Bones Icon
Level 16 Crushing Hope Icon
Level 20 Death March Icon

The Life Leech Build is particularly good against enemy Warriors with a large health pool, such as Diablo or Muradin. We generally recommend this Build if the enemy team features at least 3 melee Heroes, as March of the Black King Icon March of the Black King gets exceptional value against them. Make sure to cast Drain Hope Icon Drain Hope on a relatively immobile target in order to prevent your target from escaping its reach. At Level 4, Kneel, Peasants! Icon Kneel, Peasants! can be replaced by Ghastly Reach Icon Ghastly Reach, which has outstanding synergy with Consume Vitality Icon Consume Vitality at Level 1, if the map does not require a lot of waveclear. At Level 13, Ominous Wraith Icon Ominous Wraith can be a powerful substitute choice, especially if the enemy team has low mobility targets that have a hard time dodging your Wraith Walk Icon Wraith Walk.

Mithril Mace Build (talent calculator link)

Level 1 Consume Vitality Icon
Level 4 Ghastly Reach Icon
Level 7 Drain Momentum Icon
Level 10 Entomb Icon
Level 13 Hardened Bones Icon
Level 16 Mithril Mace Icon
Level 20 Spectral Leech Icon

The Mithril Mace Build focuses on one thing: crushing Leoric's opponents in the later stages of the game with his hard hitting mace. It provides Leoric with outstanding single target damage, which allows him to quickly decimate targets trapped in his Entomb Icon Entomb. We recommend picking Drain Momentum Icon Drain Momentum at Level 7 when using this Build, as it will allow Leoric to deliver his Auto Attacks more consistently. However, if you notice that increased self-healing is more needed, Willing Vessel Icon Willing Vessel is still a great replacement. Enemy Heroes who possess a high health pool, such as Muradin or Arthas, will suffer even more after you acquired Mithril Mace Icon Mithril Mace at Level 16 and Spectral Leech Icon Spectral Leech at Level 20. At Level 13, Ominous Wraith Icon Ominous Wraith can be a powerful substitute choice, especially if the enemy team has low mobility targets that have a hard time dodging your Wraith Walk Icon Wraith Walk.

Synergies and Counters

Leoric synergizes with

Leoric pairs off really well with high-burst Assassins like Jaina or Kael'thas who can follow up on Entomb Icon Entomb. Moreover, strong crowd control like Malfurion's Entangling Roots Icon Entangling Roots can keep enemies trapped even if Entomb expires.

Leoric is countered by

Leoric struggles against high-mobility Heroes who can simply outmaneuver him and dodge his Drain Hope Icon Drain Hope. Those Heroes are usually too far away from Leoric or too elusive to remain caught in his Entomb Icon Entomb as well.

Maps

Leoric's stronger maps Braxis Holdout Garden of Terror Tomb of the Spider Queen
Leoric's average maps Blackheart's Bay Cursed Hollow Dragon Shire Hanamura Haunted Mines Infernal Shrines Sky Temple Towers of Doom Volskaya Foundry Warhead Junction
Leoric's weaker maps Battlefield of Eternity

Leoric is a good pick on maps like Braxis Holdout, Dragon Shire, or Tomb of the Spider Queen that require a strong solo-laner with good self-sustain and waveclear.

TL;DR Tips

  • Leoric is a powerful solo-laner. Use your strong Basic Attacks and your self-sustain to your advantage.
  • Do not be afraid to sacrifice your life if this means your team gets an important Objective in return.
  • Due to their high health pool, Drain Hope Icon Drain Hope is particularly effective if used on enemy Warriors.
  • Wraith Walk Icon Wraith Walk allows you to walk through enemy Gates.
  • Trade your life when it saves one or even several of your teammates, since Undying Icon Undying causes you to resurrect faster than them.
  • You can still use your Hearthstone while in Undying Icon Undying form.
See our Abilities page for further information

2. Overview

Leoric is an aggressive melee Warrior with strong self-sustain and great mobility. He excels at dealing high damage through powerful Basic Attacks and close-range abilities, while his survivability allows him to stand his ground even if outnumbered by several enemies. After taking lethal damage, Undying Icon Undying causes him to turn into a Ghost capable of moving freely and using abilities to slow enemies. After a certain amount of time (influenced by how abilities are used while in Ghost form), Leoric comes back to life at the current location of the Ghost.

3. Strengths

  • Provides useful crowd control and vision while Undying Icon Undying is active
  • Wraith Walk Icon Wraith Walk provides great mobility and also grants protection against enemy crowd control abilities
  • Exceptional self-sustain thanks to Drain Hope Icon Drain Hope and various talents
  • Good solo-laner
  • Strong against other Warriors

4. Weaknesses

5. Role In The Current Meta

Leoric fulfills the role of an offensive Bruiser that poses a constant threat to nearby enemies. While he is innately not as durable as other Warriors like Johanna or Muradin, Leoric can nevertheless become quite tanky due to his outstanding self-heal abilities. However, the fact that Leoric has a hard time closing in on agile Heroes requires him to choose his targets wisely. In order to become a decent Leoric player, it is very important to know when to engage and when to remain patient.

What distinguishes Leoric from any other Warrior is his Undying Icon Undying trait. When Leoric dies, this trait turns him into a Ghost that can freely move around the map, continually regenerating health. As soon as Leoric's Ghost has reached full health, he resurrects at the Ghost's current location, which allows him to immediately rejoin the battle. Although Leoric cannot damage his opponents while Undying is active, he is still able to slow them and accelerate his resurrection process.
