General Information

Below, we give you a brief overview of the abilities that Jaina has access to. You should read these ability descriptions before reading further, because the other pages of the guide assume that you have a basic knowledge of Jaina's abilities.

About the Author

Oxygen is a veteran of the MOBA genre, which he has been playing for nearly 15 years. He has coached some of Heroes of the Storm's most prominent North American players and teams alike, including Team Liquid. As a Master player, he enjoys playing all Heroes and roles.

1. Frostbite (Trait)

Unlike with most other Heroes, we chose to begin the list of Jaina's abilities with her trait. This is because the Chill effect that the trait provides is integral to the way all of Jaina's abilities work.

Jaina's Abilities Chill targets, slowing Movement Speed by 25% and amplifying damage taken from her Abilities by 50%. Lasts 4 seconds.

Frostbite Icon Frostbite causes your abilities to also Chill enemies, slowing them by 25% and causing any ability that damages an enemy that is already afflicted by Chill to deal 50% increased damage. Chill lasts for 4 seconds. Damage from any of Jaina's abilities causes the duration to refresh. Chill affects all units in the game, including structures.

Frostbite is an extremely powerful trait that must be taken advantage of in order for Jaina to be effective. It applies a 25% slow to enemies, and can potentially increase the damage you deal with abilities by 50% (65% with Frostbitten Icon Frostbitten). Therefore, it is imperative that all of your abilities are used against targets that are affected by Chill whenever possible. In practice, this is quite easy to do, since your abilities will all be used shortly after one another. The difficulty comes with the order that they must be used in. For information on how to correctly order your abilities, refer to the gameplay section.

2. Frostbolt

Deal 190 (+4% per level) damage and Chill the target.

Frostbolt Icon Frostbolt causes Jaina to shoot a bolt of frost in the targeted direction, dealing damage and applying Chill to the first enemy hit.

While Cone of Cold Icon Cone of Cold and Blizzard Icon Blizzard deal slightly more damage and are area of effect, Frostbolt Icon Frostbolt has a much shorter cooldown and a larger range. It gives Jaina the precision that her other two abilities lack, allowing her to chase down enemies and reapply Chill.

Use Frostbolt whenever it is available.

3. Blizzard

Bombard an area with 3 waves of ice, dealing 142 (+4% per level) damage each. Damaged enemies are Chilled.

Blizzard Icon Blizzard causes three waves of ice to rain down upon the targeted location, after a short delay. Each wave damages and Chills all enemies within the radius.

Blizzard is Jaina's highest damaging ability (if both waves hit), at the cost of having the longest cooldown. It should only be used if at least two waves are guaranteed to hit, unless only one wave is needed to secure a kill. Since there is a delay between casting Blizzard and it dealing damage, enemies will have time to avoid it. This means that you can only use Blizzard under certain circumstances or it will miss and be wasted. Some examples of good times to use Blizzard are when enemies are stunned, slowed, grouped up, stuck in a choke point, or otherwise immobile.

If you are chasing a fleeing enemy, you can land both waves of Blizzard by first slowing them with Frostbolt Icon Frostbolt or Cone of Cold Icon Cone of Cold, and then casting Blizzard in the direction they are moving. The enemy will still be able to dodge the second wave, but only if they alter their pathing and take a detour.

Blizzard is an extremely effective tool at clearing minion waves. As early as Hero Level 2, it will kill nearly all 4 of the ranged minions in a wave. To clear minions most effectively, wait until every enemy minion begins attacking your friendly minions, at which point all enemy minions will be within the radius of your Blizzard. Use some Basic Attacks on the leftover melee minions to clear the wave.

4. Cone of Cold

Deal 230 (+4% per level) damage and Chill targets.

Cone of Cold Icon Cone of Cold instantly damages all enemies in a cone. Damaged enemies are Chilled.

Cone of Cold is Jaina's highest damaging ability (although, as we mentioned, it is surpassed by Blizzard Icon Blizzard, if both of its waves hit the target), as well as having the shortest range; its instant point-and-click nature makes it very easy to land. Cone of Cold should be used whenever it is available, but only if the target is Chilled. It is better to first Chill targets with Frostbolt Icon Frostbolt, Blizzard, or Summon Water Elemental Icon Summon Water Elemental, since they each deal less damage than Cone of Cold. This will maximise the damage from Frostbite Icon Frostbite. Once you unlock the Numbing Blast Icon Numbing Blast talent at Level 16, using Cone of Cold on Chilled targets becomes even more important, as the root is vital to land subsequent Blizzard waves. Cone of Cold can be used on non-Chilled targets to secure kills.

5. Water Elemental

Summons a Water Elemental at target location. The Water Elemental's Basic Attacks do 78 (+4% per level) damage, splash for 25% damage and Chill. Can reactivate the Ability to retarget the Water Elemental. Lasts 20 seconds.

Summon Water Elemental Icon Summon Water Elemental is the Heroic ability we recommend you take, as you will see on the Talents page. Summon Water Elemental summons a Water Elemental under your control at the target location. The Water Elemental will attack nearby enemies, with its Basic Attacks dealing 25% of their damage in an area around the target. It can be commanded to move and attack targets by using the "R" button. The Water Elemental also Chills all enemies it damages, and will last 20 seconds, or until it is killed. It can be commanded while Jaina is mounted, without dismounting her. It moves slightly faster than unmounted Heroes.

Summon Water Elemental is an extremely strong ability that exponentially increases Jaina's strength. It is strong in every type of combat (duels, team fights, short or long fights, when chasing or when fleeing). Not only does Water Elemental provide a substantial amount of damage, but it also applies a 100% uptime of Chill, slowing enemies and guaranteeing your abilities deal 50% increased damage with Frostbite Icon Frostbite (65% with Frostbitten Icon Frostbitten). Water Elemental also has a multitude of unique uses, ranging from absorbing the attacks from Forts and Keeps, to preventing enemies from Hearthstoning to their base, to providing vision.

When using your abilities on enemies, you will want Water Elemental to be the first ability to damage your target, allowing your harder hitting abilities, like Cone of Cold Icon Cone of Cold and Blizzard Icon Blizzard, to utilise their full damage potential from Frostbite. Once the Water Elemental is summoned, you will want to command it to attack your primary target. Occasionally, when there are no nearby targets, the Water Elemental will stand idle, so you should always be aware of what your Water Elemental is doing and if it is attacking the correct target.
