Table of Contents

Burn Mage, also known as Discover Mage, is a unique Archetype that came around with the Journey to Un'Goro expansion. Cards from the expansion like Primordial Glyph, Meteor, and Elise the Trailblazer all provide exceptional value and make it possible to grind down opponents over the course of long games.

Although it is a relatively new archetype, Control Mage decks have existed for most of Hearthstone's history due to high value Mage spells such as Fireball, Polymorph, and Flamestrike all being present in the Classic set. However, the card generation effects present in Burn Mage add open up the potential to quickly turn up the aggression against passive opponents with the help of Alexstrasza.

Below, you will find link to our deck lists for Burn Mage, starting with our featured deck, which we consider the most common variant.

This Burn Mage Deck is a fairly standard build of Burn Mage and is a good starting point for anyone who wishes to become more familiar with the archetype. It uses many defensive tools combined with high value spells to largely control games. It contains multiple Discover and card generation effects that further a Control strategy or allow a swift transition to burning down opponents with the help of Alexstrasza and Pyroblast.

1. Aim of the Archetype

Burn Mage aims to take full advantage of the high value spells available to the Mages to grind down opponents. The multiple Discover effects make it possible to have a dynamic pace within a game, choosing the appropriate cards to be able to almost always keep opponents in check. Where the time is right, Alexstrasza and various direct damage spells can be used to quickly burn down opponents.

2. Strengths and Weaknesses

The archetype is naturally very strong, the use of Discover effects and card generation allows for a reactive playstyle to help match the pace of opponents. However, the reliance on these kinds of cards can also potentially backfire, occasionally providing dead cards that are not useful for a matchup.

3. Key Cards and Crafting

The two key Legendary minions used within Discover Mage are Medivh, the Guardian and Alexstrasza. Medivh is by far the highest priority of the two, providing immense value when used in combination with some of the many high cost spells available such as Pyroblast, Firelands Portal, and Flamestrike. Although Alexstrasza is consistently used within Burn Mage, its role is much more flexible. It can be used to heal back to 15 Health after using Ice Block, or to set opponents health to 15 to begin burning them down with spells. As these situations do not crop up every game, Alexstrasza is a slower priority than Medivh and can be potentially cut if you are on a tight budget.

Ice Block and Primordial Glyph are the primary Epic cards used within the archetype. Ice Block is incredibly important as it provides the necessary safety to be able to play slow enough to control the board, without it a much more proactive style is required to prevent opposing burst damage, which can be very efficient and is against the overall strategy of the deck. Primordial Glyph is a very powerful card in almost every Mage deck and is highly recommended for crafting for that reason, however it necessary it can be swapped for an additional high value Mage spell.
