Barnes Spell Hunter Deck

Table of Contents

This version of Spell Hunter was taken by Bragi to Rank One Legend on EU on two separate occasions. Once just after the release of Kobolds and Catacombs, and he repeated the feat after the release of Patch 10.2. The deck functions in the same way as other Spell Hunter decks, but includes Barnes and Y'Shaarj, Rage Unbound to grab some early-game victories. Although this deck has since become a Wild deck, it is still an enjoyable deck to play and can cause havoc for many opponents.

1. Phantom Hunter Card List

This deck costs 6,220 Arcane Dust and it is made up of the following cards.

3. Comments On The Phantom Hunter Variation

The deck aims to play Barnes on Turn 4. If that happens, it will fetch a 1/1 copy of the only other minion in the deck, Y'Shaarj, Rage Unbound. The 1/1 copy will then fetch the 10/10 Y'Shaarj and set up an often unbeatable start. To maximize the chances of this happening, you should not mulligan any cards at all if you have Barnes in your opening hand without Y'Shaarj. The danger is that you pick up Y'Shaarj, and are therefore unable to fetch it from your deck.

Tracking should also be played with caution. Although you will want to use Tracking to dig towards your Barnes, you should wait as long as possible before doing so, in case you find Barnes and Y'Shaarj at the same time.

Other than this combo, the rest of the deck will play out in the same way as the featured build.

4. Pros and Cons of the Phantom Hunter

This deck can sometimes win very rapidly. A Turn 3 Barnes with The Coin finding Y'Shaarj, Rage Unbound is unanswerable by many decks. Against those decks, the win percentage of the Spell Hunter is raised considerably by the inclusion of this combo.

The deck is significantly less consistent than normal Spell Hunter builds. Sometimes you will draw Y'Shaarj and be unable to play it for the entire game. Some classes can deal with the card quite easily. Mage has Polymorph, Rogue has Vilespine Slayer, and Shaman has Hex. The quantity of decks in the metagame that can deal with an early 10/10 will be a big factor in choosing which version of the archetype you play.

5. Phantom Hunter Quick Mulligan

You will usually be throwing everything away to look for Barnes. If you have Barnes in your hand and no Y'Shaarj, Rage Unbound, you should keep everything so as to lessen the chances of drawing Y'Shaarj before you play Barnes.
