Secret Mage Archetype Guide

Table of Contents

Secret Mage is an Archetype that many players have tried to build for a long time. Mage has several cards that have incredible synergy with Secrets. This can lead to many of the cards being discounted if a Secret is in play, or lead to Secrets being free to cast. This archetype takes advantage of those synergies to get a very powerful early board. It then attempts to hold onto that board using a range of removal spells. As there is often a large amount of damage on the board, the deck will often finish off the opponent very quickly if it goes unchecked.

Despite this, the archetype was previously not particularly successful as an aggressive deck. However, the releases of Kabal Crystal Runner in the Mean Streets of Gadgetzan expansion, followed by Arcanologist in Journey to Un'Goro, filled in the gaps where previously the archetype was struggling. The archetype is now capable of some extremely explosive early turns, which can carry it to victory.

With the removal of Kabal Crystal Runner and Ice Block for The Year of the Raven, the archetype again had to reinvent itself. This time it did so by adding more early damage, as well as Vex Crow which enabled the archetype to continue to threaten early victories.

There are many choices to make when building a Secret Mage deck, which means that sometimes the specific cards will either be decisions based upon the meta or personal preference. When reading through Secret Mage guides, always be aware that you can change a card for another card of the same type, and not have a big negative impact on the way the deck plays out.

Below, you will find link to our deck lists for Secret Mage, starting with our featured deck, which we consider the most common variant.

Secret Mage gained a key card towards more aggressive builds with the release of Kobolds and Catacombs, Explosive Runes. This card not only keeps the board clear for your minions to attack, but also deals damage to the opponent directly. This means that Aggro Secret Mage Deck can run a low curve and refuel using Aluneth. This version uses Breath of Sindragosa and Mirror Image to protect its early board. It has been updated for The Year of the Raven.

Wild Secret Mage is an extremely aggressive deck which focuses on doing as much damage as it can with minions in the early turns, and then finishes off the job with burn. The Wild format gives access to Mad Scientist and Forgotten Torch, which aid the Secret synergy and burn potential respectively.

1. Aim of Secret Mage

This archetype aims to abuse reduced card costs to explode onto the board very early on. The board can be protected with Secrets and Spells, while the high-value minions deliver several turns of high damage. Once the board is lost, spells no longer kill the opposing defenders, and instead turn to burning the opponent to remove any remaining Health.

2. Secret Mage Strengths and Weaknesses

Very aggressive opponents can be difficult for the deck to deal with. The archetype often uses Explosive Runes to help to defend itself against big minions, while still getting a very desirably effect against small ones if the opponent attempts to play around it. As the deck's strength is in removing or ignoring large opposing defenders, it can struggle to remove very wide boards of small minions. If you end up having to trade away your board, you can find yourself short on cards.

The deck excels in beating Crystal Rogue, and has a decent matchup against Cubelock and slower decks in general. It can deliver a lot of damage very rapidly, and Taunt minions can be blown out of the way using available burn spells. Counterspell makes the board difficult for opponents to remove, and will often result in them missing a turn, which allows the Secret Mage to further develop.

3. Key Cards and Crafting for Secret Mage

Aluneth is an extremely important card in this archetype. Without it, it is extremely difficult to get a postive win rate. If you do not own Archmage Antonidas, you can get by with any other good Mage card. The same goes for Pyroblast and Primordial Glyph, although taking out these cards from the decks in which they are listed will usually have a negative impact.
