General Information

This guide contains detailed Strategy, Mulligan, and deck-building information to help you play Murloc Paladin in The Boomsday Project expansion.

Murloc decks have existed since Hearthstone's inception, utilising cheap minions with tribal synergies to rush down opponents. Murloc Paladin rose in popularity after the Journey to Un'Goro expansion due to the addition of Hydrologist and Gentle Megasaur. Throughout the year of the Mammoth, Murloc Paladin fluctuated in popularity as a top-tier deck.

Murloc Paladin has continued to completely disappear from The Boomsday Project meta due to much more viable Mech synergies being available and cards like Giggling Inventor greatly hindering minion-based decks.

Murloc Paladin is a proactive deck that aims to explode onto the board and your Mulligan should reflect that.

You should aim for a solid curve of Murlocs, such as Murloc Tidecaller, Rockpool Hunter, Hydrologist, and Murloc Warleader for your opening turns. You can additionally keep Lost in the Jungle in your opening hand, but should not keep Righteous Protector or Knife Juggler as these are your prime targets for Call to Arms later in the game.

Due to the high power level of the card, Call to Arms can also be kept in all matchups.

4. Murloc Paladin Wild Strategy

Your aim in the early game is to play an Aggro style and explode onto the board as fast as possible. When evaluating which minions to play, you should try to keep in mind how you expect your next few turns to play out. For example, when deciding whether to play Righteous Protector, Lost in the Jungle, or Murloc Tidecaller on turn 1, Righteous Protector is much more useful later on to protect key minions and Murloc Tidecaller is much stronger if you are able to play other Murlocs like Rockpool Hunter and Murloc Warleader on the following turns. Similarly, you can use a similar process for deciding between Hydrologist, Rockpool Hunter, and Knife Juggler on turn 2. In this situation, Rockpool Hunter is the best play if you have another Murloc on the board, Knife Juggler is a strong alternative if you can pair it with Lost in the Jungle or Call to Arms on the following turn, and Hydrologist is a solid neutral choice if none of the conditions for the other cards have been met.

Going into turn 3 and 4, you should look to compound any early board advantage you have managed to leverage. This can be done by using Unidentified Maul, especially if it is a Blessed Maul or Purifier's Maul. Alternatively, you can use Murloc Warleader, Coldlight Seer, or Gentle Megasaur if you have multiple Murlocs on the board. If you have more than one of these cards in your hand, a similar process to that which was applied for turns 1 or 2 can be used. Murloc Warleader is the best choice by default, as the Attack buff allows you to put the most pressure onto your opponent. If your board is vulnerable to AoE effects, like Hellfire, Coldlight Seer is often a better choice to secure your board before you begin to be aggressive. Gentle Megasaur is the lowest priority of the 3 options. This is because the other two choices are both Murlocs that can benefit from the Adapt effect from Gentle Megasaur. Additionally, the Adapt mechanic is much more random and therefore much more less consistent than the other cards. The exception to this is if you desire an effect they cannot offer like Poisonous or Divine Shield.

If you fail to secure the early-game board, or simply wish to press your advantage, Call to Arms is an excellent tool to help you populate the board. Though the card is very powerful, you should be very careful when playing it as opponents will often hold back resources to counter it. As a general rule, if your board is empty, then you should play it, else you should hold it back, unless you are certain your opponent does not have board clears like Defile and Hellfire.

As you will be the aggressor in most games, you will often be the one dictating the pace of the game. A general rule for this is to have enough pressure on the board to push 10-14 points of damage per turn, while still holding back enough resources to refill the board if your opponent is able to clear it. The exception to this rule is if you have Divine Favor in your hand. With access to Divine Favor, you should try to be as Mana efficient and aggressive as possible and proceeding to refill your hand when you run out of cards.

As you progress further, you will have a range of additional tools to help you to close out games. Spellbreaker is used in the deck to complement the board-centric style of the deck and should be saved to push past key Taunt minions to deal the final point of damage. Similarly, Sunkeeper Tarim can be used to dwarf any big threats your opponent plays to allow you to push through them. Additionally, Sunkeeper Tarim doubles as a burst damage card that allows you to extract additional damage from minions like Righteous Protector and Silver Hand Recruit if you have a wide board. The rest of the deck consists of others sources of burst damage like Vinecleaver, Fungalmancer, and Blessing of Kings.

5. Murloc Paladin Wild Card Swaps

The deck is quite rigid in how it is built and most of the minions in the deck are irreplaceable. However, you can consider removing or doubling up on some of the tech cards in the deck, like Vinecleaver, Fungalmancer, Spellbreaker, and Blessing of Kings.

6. Alternative Murloc Paladin Wild Decks

This section of the guide contains some alternative Murloc Paladin Wild variants that can be used instead of the deck used in the main guide. The variants listed are still able to compete at Legend ranks but have minor differences in the way they play.

6.1. Spiteful Murloc Paladin Wild Deck

This variant adds in a Spiteful Summoner package to add continued value going into the late game. This deck still runs Call to Arms due to the strength of the card, despite lowering the value of Spiteful Summoner. Divine Favor is replaced with Dinosize as part of the Spiteful Package. To compensate for this, you should aim to play a bit slower as you have no way to refill your hand if you run out of cards, but you do have the late-game burst of Dinosize instead.

7. Budget Murloc Paladin Wild Deck

This Budget Murloc Paladin cuts out most expensive Legendary and Epic cards while still trying to remain as competitive as possible. However, some key cards like Call to Arms, Murloc Warleader, and Gentle Megasaur have been kept in the deck due to how much strength they add to the deck.

This cheap deck follows the same strategy as the full-budget version. However, it lacks some of the safety that comes with having Sunkeeper Tarim and the mid-game tempo that comes with Nightmare Amalgam, replacing them with Truesilver Champion and Coldlight Seer.

Wild Murloc Paladin offers even more early-game strength in the form of Shielded Minibot, Vilefin Inquisitor, and Rallying Blade. You should use this advantage to push for even more aggression for swift victories. As there are many more minions with powerful effects in the Wild format, you should make sure to save your Spellbreaker until absolutely necessary.

9. Quick Tips and Tricks

  • Always consider what AoE effects your opponent may have available before you commit to flooding the board.
  • Be as aggressive as possible if you have Divine Favor to fall back on.
  • Sunkeeper Tarim can be used both offensively and defensively to great effect.
  • Use Righteous Protector to protect key minions like Murloc Warleader.
  • Save your Spellbreaker to help push through the final damage.
