OTK DK Paladin Deck List Guide (The Boomsday Project October 2018)

This guide contains detailed Strategy, Mulligan, and deck-building information to help you play OTK DK Paladin in The Boomsday Project expansion.

OTK DK Paladin is a deck that has been on the fringe of being a competitive deck throughout many different expansions, ever since Uther of the Ebon Blade was released. It is primarily a Control deck that uses strong Paladin removal tools to keep opponents in line while slowly drifting towards its win condition. To win the game the deck aims to summon all four Horsemen from the The Four Horsemen Hero Power. To achieve this, cards like Ancient Brewmaster are used to slowly collect all of the Horsemen in hand so that they can be played in a single turn to end the game.

The latest iteration of the deck from The Boomsday Project expansion does not feature any significant new cards, but it is a sold choice in a meta game full of Control and Aggro decks.

3. OTK DK Paladin Mulligan Guide

Despite using a Combo to win the game, OTK DK Paladin is a Control deck deep down and your Mulligan strategy should reflect that. You should be looking for reactive tools to answer any plays you expect your opponent to throw at you.

In your opening hand you should always be looking for Call to Arms due to the sheer strength of the card. If you already have Call to Arms, you can also keep Stonehill Defender as another proactive card.

Against Aggro, you can look to keep additional early minions, like Loot Hoarder, Righteous Protector and Plated Beetle in addition to Truesilver Champion so that you do not get overwhelmed in the early game. You can also keep a copy of Equality to ensure you have it to pair with your other cards later in the game.

Against slower decks, you can also keep Uther of the Ebon Blade and card draw, like Loot Hoarder and Prismatic Lens to help accelerate towards you win condition as quickly as possible.

You can keep Truesilver Champion against Druid and Priest. Having a weapon available on Turn 4 will greatly help the fight for board control.

4. OTK DK Paladin Strategy

In the early game you should look to play any early minions you have, like Righteous Protector, Loot Hoarder, and Plated Beetle. However, you should avoid playing Wild Pyromancer as it is a key card if you need to clear the board later in the game.

Moving into the mid game you should try and play Stonehill Defender as soon as possible, ideally picking up a powerful Paladin-exclusive Taunt minions like Sunkeeper Tarim or Tirion Fordring. Failing that you should look for any useful Taunt minion that will fit into your future Mana curve. As a followup you will often want to play a Truesilver Champion, even if your opponent has no minions on board. Having it equipped gives you opportunities to control the board for many turns to come. Alternatively, against slower decks or if you do not have a Truesilver Champion, you can play Prismatic Lens instead.

Going into Turn 5, you will almost always want to play Call to Arms. The tempo generated by the card is reason enough to play it, however it is a great tool for thinning your deck and improving your draws overall for the future. In rare situations where your opponent has put on heavy pressure leading up to Turn 5, you may opt to play a Giggling Inventor instead to stall the game, this is a much stronger choice if you can follow it up with a combination of Consecration, Bloodmage Thalnos, Wild Pyromancer, and Equality to clear some or all of the board.

Heading into the late game, your aim should be to play Uther of the Ebon Blade as soon as possible. The reasons for doing so are twofold. Against Aggro decks, playing Uther is often enough to win the game, the 5 Armor combined with the Grave Vengeance provides a large amount of healing and Control that Aggro cannot recover from. Against slower decks, Uther early allows you to start using The Four Horsemen Hero Power as soon as possible as part of your win condition.

The primary win condition for the deck is to The Four Horsemen to win the game. While this may seem like an impossible task, the deck has many tools to help with this which require correct usage. The slowest and most consistent way to achieve this goal is to use Ancient Brewmaster and Zola the Gorgon to add copies of each Horseman to your hand after you summon them. When doing this you should take note of which ones you have in hand so that you do not accidental create duplicates. When you have 3 different Horsemen in hand, you can play all 3 and Hero Power to win the game, ensuring you Hero Power last to prevent you summoning a Horseman you already have in your hand. If at any point you summon a Horseman and your opponent fails to immediately kill it, your win condition becomes much easier to achieve. If this happens, you can either play 2 Horsemen from hand and use your Hero Power or play one from hand and use Blackwald Pixie to Hero Power twice in a single turn to end the game.

5. OTK DK Paladin Card Swaps

The deck is quite flexible overall outside of key cards like Uther of the Ebon Blade, Ancient Brewmaster, and Zola the Gorgon. However, it should be noted that Youthful Brewmasters cannot reliably be added to the deck due to the use of Call to Arms.

You can try adding a second Shrink Ray or Plated Beetle to add more defensive tools to the deck.

A second copy of Prismatic Lens can be added to the deck to provide more card draw and improve the deck against Control.

6. Budget OTK DK Paladin Deck

OTK DK Paladin can cut out multiple Legendary cards to make the deck cheap relative to the full-budget version. However, it is still reliant on Uther of the Ebon Blade and Zola the Gorgon as part of its strategy and is expensive compared to other budget decks.

The cards removed from the deck, Sunkeeper Tarim, Crystalsmith Kangor, and Bloodmage Thalnos are all good defensive tools that lower the survivability of the deck. However, there are solid replacements available in the form of Plated Beetle and Stubborn Gastropods. The biggest loss is the healing bonus of Crystalsmith Kangor so consider using your removal tools slightly earlier to keep your Health total more respectable as there is less healing available later in the game.

OTK DK Paladin is a niche deck that is only currently available in the Standard format.

8. Quick Tips and Tricks

  • Remember to play your Horsemen before using your Hero Power when closing out the game.
  • Check that you do not already have a copy of a horseman in your hand before you use Ancient Brewmaster or Zola the Gorgon before it.
  • Try and use your other removal tools before resorting to using Equality.
  • Use Call to Arms as soon as possible to improve your draws overall.
