Table of Contents

Even Warlock became a new deck with the release of Genn Greymane in The Witchwood expansion. Genn Greymane reduces Warlock's Life Tap power to 1 Mana, which means that you can operate with more cards in hand. This in turn can lead to Mountain Giant being played on Turn 3 if you have The Coin as well as making Twilight Drake a formidable early minion. The first player to popularise this deck was Sjow and it is his deck list that is used in this guide.

1. Even Warlock Card List

This Even Warlock deck costs 7,720 Arcane Dust and it is made up of the following cards.

3. Aim of Even Warlock

Even Warlock aims to play massive early minions such as Mountain Giant and Twilight Drake and win the game with those minions. It can do that with consistency thanks to the reduced-cost Warlock Hero Power Life Tap. As with many strong decks, this gameplan is versatile, and as such the minions can be given Taunt using Sunfury Protector against more aggressive decks. There deck also includes powerful removal spell such as Defile and Hellfire to control the board. The deck also includes Bloodreaver Gul'dan to give the deck some sustain.

4. Even Warlock Mulligan

As the fundamental idea of the deck is to draw cards and play Mountain Giant and Twilight Drake, these are always kept in the mulligan phase. Beyond that, it is important that you know your matchups.

Against decks that are likely to be aggressive, you will be looking to keep Defile. Note that this is not the solution against all aggressive decks as there is no good way to generate 1 and 2-Health minions to set a Defile chain in action. Against aggressive decks that rely on minions with 3 Health, you will be looking to keep Doomsayer, Vulgar Homunculus, and Plated Beetle so as to challenge the early board.

Against control decks, you will be looking mainly for the two large minions. In some very slow matchups, you can keep Rin, the First Disciple.

5. Even Warlock Strategy

5.1. Even Warlock Early Turns

In the early part of the game, you will be looking to draw as many cards as possible. If you do not have The Coin, you will always use Life Tap on turn one. If you do have The Coin, then you will still do this except against the most aggressive decks and if your hand allows you to occupy the board with Plated Beetle. Even then, you should always have it foremost in your mind to use the Hero Power. If you do not do this, then your Giants and Drakes become significantly less powerful.

If you have Mountain Giant in your hand with The Coin, you will not often have a better play than to get it onto the board on turn 3. Similarly with Twilight Drake, you will be looking to coin this out on the third turn. Not only are these cards great aggressive options, but if needed, they can trade multiple times to keep your opponent's board under control. In an ideal world, you will be able to play Doomsayer on the turn before you play your big minions so as to gain control of the board after the Doomsayer has cleared everything.

You should also keep an eye on your health total for the purposes of playing Hooked Reaver. This card becomes amazing value if you can play it as a 7/7 Taunt, and should encourage you to use your Life Tap ability as much as feels safe. You should bear in mind whenever playing this deck that not only is your Health a resource, but taking damage can actively help you when balanced correctly.

5.2. Even Warlock Later Turns

If possible, try to save your healing cards until after you have played Hooked Reaver. Your Spellstones will become more powerful as the game goes by, and you might find that your Shroom Brewers are better used on a Mountain Giant which threatens to win the game than on your own Health total.

Against Control decks which have neutralised your early threats, you will sometimes find that you begin to run out of threats. In these matchups, you can use your Life Tap extremely aggressively to try to find Rin, the First Disciple and Bloodreaver Gul'dan. Gul'dan is less powerful in this deck than in many other Warlock decks, but the sustained damage that he can churn out can still often make a huge difference over the course of a long game.

Against Aggro decks, your Sunfury Protector comes into its own in the middle game. You should be aware that you do not have to always position this in the middle of two minions. If one of your minions is low on Health, you can choose to just give one minion Taunt so as to protect the injured one. If you go down this route, you should pay attention to any potential Silence effects that your opponent might use to push through a lot of damage.

6. Even Warlock Single Card Strategies

6.1. Dread Infernal

Dread Infernal serves the dual purpose of helping you to power up your Lesser Amethyst Spellstone as well as being yet another large minion for your opponent to deal with. Although the effect of doing 1 damage to everything can be useful from time to time, it is not generally that helpful by the time it is convenient to play the Dread Infernal.

6.2. Hooked Reaver

Although some opponents will try to stop you from playing Hooked Reaver as a big minion until it suits them, you can control your Health total using your Life Tap and also Vulgar Homunculus. If this card can back up an early Mountain Giant or Twilight Drake, you will often find yourself in an incredibly powerful position. Note than when brought back with Bloodreaver Gul'dan, Hooked Reaver is always just a 4/4.

6.3. Mountain Giant

Knowing which turn you can play your Mountain Giant should become natural after a few games. If you do not have The Coin, then you can miss one Life Tap and still be able to play the Giant on turn 4. If you do have The Coin and tap on the first two turns, you can play it on turn 3. This situation can often win games on its own.

7. Even Warlock Key Cards and Swaps

7.1. Legendaries

Genn Greymane is essential to the deck as it is the card that allows the reduced Hero Power. However, it should be noted that Genn is useful in multiple decks, and is not likely to be wasted if crafted.

Rin, the First Disciple is good against certain Control decks, but can be substituted for any midrange card. If you own The Lich King, then that is a good substitution. Otherwise, Argent Commander is a good filler card.

Bloodreaver Gul'dan is far more important than Rin, but if you want to try the deck without him, and again use Argent Commander to see how the deck plays out, you can make that substitution.

7.2. Epics

Mountain Giant is essential to the deck, and is not replaceable.

Doomsayer is important, especially in more aggressive metagames. It is also a card that ends up being played in many decks, and will most likely not be wasted dust in the future. If you do not have the dust available, you can try using Ancient Watcher. If you make this change, you should use your Spellbreakers to turn it into an attacking minion, or your Sunfury Protectors to turn it into a big Taunt minion.

8. Quick Tips and Tricks

  • Use Life Tap aggressively to fuel your Mountain Giants and Twilight Drakes.
  • Try to use Doomsayer on the turn before playing a big minion.
  • Do not panic if your Health total drops low. It makes your Hooked Reavers better.
  • Try to save your healing cards for after you have played Hooked Reaver.
