Survival Hunter PvP Guide (Season 4)

Survival Hunter is a powerful Hunter specialization with high burst and overall damage, strong mobility and crowd control potential.

The Survival Hunter damage rotation leaves a lot of space for skill expression and outplay potential. Survival is a hybrid between ranged and melee DPS, where most of the rotation can be done from range, and getting into melee range is only required for Mongoose Bite burst windows and for using Muzzle.

The Survival Hunter rotation does not require you to apply several dots before being able to do meaningful burst damage, meaning that you are free to swap targets at short notice with low opportunity cost. Survival has strong long cooldown burst abilities in Coordinated Assault and Spearhead, but it also has a lot of short cooldown burst abilities such as Explosive Shot, Death Chakrams and Fury of the Eagle.

There is also flexibility in the PvP talents available, with niche utility options that aren't available to Beast Mastery or Survival Hunters (Sticky Tar Bomb, Mending Bandage and Tracker's Net).

Once you are comfortable weaving in and out of melee range during your burst windows, kiting inbetween, timing your crowd control windows, and maximizing your consistent damage outside of cooldowns, Survival is an incredibly fun and rewarding specialization.

Survival rewards opportunistic and aggressive play as well as knowing when and how to kite between damage windows. You win by setups, burst, and punishing enemies that misuse defensives or position poorly. Survival is not a spec that wins by one-shotting, and playing to maximize damage done (and reduce damage taken) is how it competes with other specializations that may be more forgiving when it comes to burst or crowd control.

Strengths

• High burst damage when dumping focus on Mongoose Bite as well as cleave with Wildfire Bomb, Explosive Shot and Fury of the Eagle
• High sustained damage
• High execute damage with Fury of the Eagle
• Decent mobility and kiting tools
• Mortal strike from pets
• Support for team with Roar of Sacrifice, Master's Call, Sentinel's Perception or Interlope

Weaknesses

• Has to play in melee range while bursting
• Relatively low survivability when trained
• High number of keybinds and a hit-and-run playstyle that isn't as intuitive as other melee specs
• Heavily relies on landing Freezing Trap at the right moment

There have been no changes to Survival in Dragonflight Season 4, except for the tier set reverting from the Season 3 variant (which buffed Fury of the Eagle) to the Season 1 variant (which buffs Raptor Strike/Mongoose Bite).
