Unholy Death Knight Leveling Guide for The War Within

1.1.

Unholy Death Knight Leveling Playstyle

Unholy Death Knight is a fast leveler, both being able to multi-dot and burst down large packs of enemies quickly, as well as being the most mobile leveling class via On a Paler Horse Icon On a Paler Horse once you reach level 71. Furthermore, we have great self-sustain via procs of Dark Succor Icon Dark Succor, keeping us healthy as we AoE down pack after pack.

2.

Runeforge Choice

When you get the option to Runeforge, make sure you apply Rune of the Fallen Crusader Icon Rune of the Fallen Crusader, as it speeds up the leveling process the most! You can also use Rune of Unending Thirst Icon Rune of Unending Thirst for some nice speed boost after killing mobs.

3.

Gear Options

When leveling up, you should always choose the piece of loot with the highest item level.

4.

Level by Level Rotation and Talents

Move the slider below to make the guide update to your level!

Level: 70

Depending on which race you picked, you will start at a different level, and have a slightly different intro:

  • If you picked an Allied Race then you start at level 10.
  • On the other hand, if you started with a non-allied race, you start at level 8.
4.1.

Talents to Level Up as an Unholy Death Knight

Your first talent row unlocks at Level 10.

Your talent set up should be as follows.

4.2.

Rotation to Level Up as an Unholy Death Knight

Starting, you will only have two main attack abilities: Rune Strike Icon Rune Strike and Death Coil Icon Death Coil.

  1. Rune Strike Icon Rune Strike is your main Rune Spending ability.
  2. Army of the Dead Icon Army of the Dead should be used as much as possible, ideally on more difficult mobs, as the cooldown brings a lot of Single Target burst.
  3. Legion of Souls Icon Legion of Souls should be used as much as possible to leverage its damage.
  4. Unholy Assault Icon Unholy Assault to quickly set up wounds and make the use of Apocalypse Icon Apocalypse nice and smooth.
  5. Outbreak Icon Outbreak should be used to apply Virulent Plague Icon Virulent Plague to all targets.
  6. Dark Transformation Icon Dark Transformation can be used off cooldown. However, you should also make sure you have it available for larger packs of mobs or more difficult packs.
  7. Outbreak Icon Outbreak should be used to apply Virulent Plague Icon Virulent Plague to all targets. Only use it if Dark Transformation Icon Dark Transformation has not been used to apply your DoT already, or if the first application has run out.
  8. Outbreak Icon Outbreak should be used to apply Virulent Plague Icon Virulent Plague to all targets. Only use it if Apocalypse Icon Apocalypse has not been used to apply your DoT already, or if the first application has run out.
  9. Use Apocalypse Icon Apocalypse, ideally on a target with 4+ Festering Wound Icon Festering Wounds but can be used on anything with more than one.
  10. Death Coil Icon Death Coil to spend your Runic Power.
  11. Death Coil Icon Death Coil to spend Runic Power at 1-2 targets.
  12. Use Epidemic Icon Epidemic when there are 3+ targets.
  13. Use Death and Decay Icon Death and Decay to Scourge Strike Icon Scourge Strike cleave packs of 2+ mobs.
  14. Use Scourge Strike Icon Scourge Strike when there is at least 1 Festering Wound Icon Festering Wound on your target.
  15. Use Scourge Strike Icon Scourge Strike when there is at least 1 Festering Wound Icon Festering Wound on your target or to keep up your Plaguebringer Icon Plaguebringer buff.
  16. Use Festering Strike Icon Festering Strike when there are 0 Festering Wound Icon Festering Wounds on your target and you are not currently cleaving with Death and Decay Icon Death and Decay.

There are some passive abilities that you unlock through the leveling process that can change your play style and rotation.

  • Sudden Doom Icon Sudden Doom affects both Death Coil Icon Death Coil and Epidemic Icon Epidemic, empowering them significantly. These procs should be used quickly to ensure that you do not override your current proc!
  • Dark Succor Icon Dark Succor is incredible for leveling, allowing you to easily heal and stay at high health while chain-pulling packs and mobs.
4.3.

Unholy Death Knight Defensive and Utility Abilities while Leveling

  • Anti-Magic Shell Icon Anti-Magic Shell is a very strong magic shield that also generates Runic Power when it absorbs magic damage. This should be used whenever magic damage is present to take advantage of the Runic Power generation.
  • Lichborne Icon Lichborne is a relatively powerful ability for leveling, as it provides you with a good chunk of Leech. Use this cooldown to take advantage of the healing and try to pair it with high AoE or burst combinations.
  • Icebound Fortitude Icon Icebound Fortitude is an amazing defensive cooldown that should be used whenever necessary in order to keep you moving from pack to pack.
  • Raise Ally Icon Raise Ally cannot be used when solo leveling, however, it is fantastic in dungeon groups if you decide to level that way.
  • Death's Advance Icon Death's Advance is one of your only movement speed cooldowns making it incredibly useful when leveling. The secondary effects of this are not too useful in leveling scenarios, except for the passive that prevents you from being slowed past a certain point.
  • Death Grip Icon Death Grip grips your target towards you, allowing you to start fighting it straight away. Really useful to speed up the leveling process.
  • Mind Freeze Icon Mind Freeze is your interrupt which is great to use against casting mobs, significantly reducing the damage they deal to you!
4.4.
