Holy Paladin PvP Guide (Legion 7.3)

Table of Contents

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to play a Holy Paladin in a PvP environment. The guide will cover everything from talent choices, artifacts, gameplay and rotation, and useful racial bonuses. It is most applicable to Arena content, but most talents and racial bonuses will work in Rated Battlegrounds and skirmishes.

About The Author

This guide has been written by Mysticall, a seasoned PvP player who has repeatedly achieved Arena Master and 2300 rating. You can watch his stream on Twitch, and you can also check out his YouTube channel.

1. Spec Overview / Place in the Current Meta

Holy Paladins are in a great position this season. With strong utility for teammates and the ability to actually deal large amounts of damage, they are considered one of the best healers. A strong understanding of cooldowns and when to use them is important to be good at this specialization.

2. Gear

With regards to gear, the biggest change in Legion is that there is no more PvP gear. Your strength in PvP will be determined based on the average item level of your gear (as displayed on your character sheet). For example, the base item level at level 110 is 800, so your stats in PvP will be adjusted accordingly. For every 10 item levels you gain, your stats are increased by 1%.

The implication is that it does not matter where your gear comes from, and all that matters is its item level. Gear from quests or PvE content is just as good as gear you get as a reward from PvP (which, in fact, will be very similar to PvE gear; there are no more PvP stats on gear).

Practically, you will simply look to collect gear with the highest item levels possible, and the stat distribution on the gear will not matter.

3. Artifact Traits

Below, we will explain what the recommended order for artifact traits is, if you wish to maximise your PvP potential. It is quite possible that your artifact path (at the time of reading this guide) differs from our suggestions. If this is the case, do not worry, and use the information below to help you understand your traits and guide your future choices.

If you recently decided to make a Holy Paladin and are behind on your Artifact weapon, or you have decided to venture into PvP with your Holy Paladin, try to first get the closest Golden trait. Picking up some of the more crucial traits ( Icon Vindicator, Icon Blessings of the Silver Hand, Icon Share the Burden, and Icon Shock Treatment) is highly recommended to begin PvP.

3.1. First Golden Trait

The first Golden trait you want to reach is Icon Power of the Silver Hand.

  1. Take Icon Virtues of the Light.
  2. Take Icon Knight of the Silver Hand.
  3. Take Icon Shock Treatment.
  4. Take Icon Vindicator.
  5. Take Icon Deliver the Light.
  6. Take Icon Power of the Silver Hand.

3.2. Second Golden Trait

The second Golden trait to go for is Icon The Light Saves.

  1. Take Icon Expel the Darkness.
  2. Take Icon Blessings of the Silver Hand.
  3. Take Icon The Light Saves.

3.3. Remaining Traits

After this, you should try to pick up the last Golden trait, Icon Protection of Tyr, picking up the remaining traits after that. There is no specific order for the rest, but a recommended trait to get is Icon Share the Burden.

4. Relics

Relics are disabled in PvP, so they are not a concern to you.

5. Talent Choices

Regular talents work in both PvP and PvE content (although they may sometimes work differently in the two environments, which is indicated by their tooltips). In other words, they are always active.

On the other hand, Honor talents are inactive outside of a PvP environment.

5.1. Regular Talents

5.1.1. Tier 1 (Level 15) Talents

Bestow Faith Icon Bestow Faith is the best choice in this tier. This ability has a short cooldown and gives a strong single-target heal at the end of its duration.

5.1.2. Tier 2 (Level 30) Talents

When playing against two casters, Unbreakable Spirit Icon Unbreakable Spirit is the best choice in this tier if you think the game will last a long time. However, if you are playing against a team and you feel you do not need the cooldown reduction on these spells, Cavalier Icon Cavalier is a great talent too. This will allow you to push in and out of the enemy team.

5.1.3. Tier 3 (Level 45) Talents

Fist of Justice Icon Fist of Justice is the best choice in this tier. This is a strong stun to use on a kill target or for setting up crowd control on the enemy team. Be sure to use Judgment Icon Judgment off cooldown.

5.1.4. Tier 4 (Level 60) Talents

Devotion Aura Icon Devotion Aura is the best choice in this tier. The damage reduction from this talent greatly increases the survivability of both you and your teammates.

5.1.5. Tier 5 (Level 75) Talents

Holy Avenger Icon Holy Avenger is the best choice in this tier. This gives you an additional healing cooldown as Holy Paladins are weak when they do not have Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath or Avenging Crusader Icon Avenging Crusader available.

5.1.6. Tier 6 (Level 90) Talents

Sanctified Wrath Icon Sanctified Wrath is the best choice in this tier. This talent greatly reduces the cooldown of your strongest healing ability and increases its effect, making it an even more important ability.

5.1.7. Tier 7 (Level 100) Talents

Beacon of the Lightbringer Icon Beacon of the Lightbringer is the best choice in this tier. Holy Paladins Mastery increases healing done the closer you are to your teammates. However, in Arena, it is not a good idea to stand in the middle of the map with your teammates because you can easily be crowd controlled. With this talent, you will be able to benefit from your Mastery, but not have to stand in the open.

5.2. Honor Talents

5.2.1. Tier 1 Talents

Against teams with a lot of crowd control, Relentless Icon Relentless is the best choice in this tier. Reducing the duration of every crowd control ability is crucial in Arena. Against any other team, Gladiator's Medallion Icon Gladiator's Medallion is the best choice in this tier. It is the standard PvP trinket effect with a 2-minute cooldown.

5.2.2. Tier 2 Talents

If you are playing against a team with strong spread pressure, Defender of the Weak Icon Defender of the Weak is the best choice in this tier. This will allow you to quickly get your teammates' health up when they are low on health. Alternatively, you can take Divine Favor Icon Divine Favor against teams with strong single-target damage and multiple interrupts.

5.2.3. Tier 3 Talents

Unbound Freedom Icon Unbound Freedom is the best choice in this tier. The increase to movement speed makes it easier to get away from the enemy team or to help your teammates get to an enemy.

Against teams with a class that has multiple DoTs, like Shadow Priests, Cleanse the Weak Icon Cleanse the Weak is the best choice in this tier. This will allow you to dispel Vampiric Touch Icon Vampiric Touch on multiple of your teammates in one global cooldown.

5.2.4. Tier 4 Talents

Light's Grace Icon Light's Grace is the best choice in this tier. The increased healing to Holy Light Icon Holy Light increases your overall healing drastically. It is also strong against teams with single-target damage because you will only be using Holy Light Icon Holy Lights on them. However, if you are playing against an Assassination Rogue or Unholy Death Knight, Pure of Heart Icon Pure of Heart is the best choice in this tier to remove their diseases and poisons.

5.2.5. Tier 5 Talents

Ultimate Sacrifice Icon Ultimate Sacrifice is the best choice in this tier. This makes your Blessing of Sacrifice Icon Blessing of Sacrifice much stronger and should be used when you see the enemy using offensive cooldowns.

5.2.6. Tier 6 Talents

Blessed Hands Icon Blessed Hands is the best choice in this tier. This gives you additional utility for your teammates and gives you multiple defensive cooldowns.

6. Racial Bonuses

Racial bonuses can provide interesting PvP benefits. Here are the best races to choose for each faction.

6.1. Horde

The Blood Elf Silence (Arcane Torrent Icon Arcane Torrent) is really strong. This adds to the crowd control you can bring to the table.

6.2. Alliance

The Human racial bonus (Every Man for Himself Icon Every Man for Himself) is a great way to get out of stuns.

7. Playstyle

The main role for a Holy Paladin, besides keeping your team alive, is to use your utility to prevent your teammates from using cooldowns and keep them offensive.

To keep your team offensive, you will often push in with your team to try to get a Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice on the enemy team. You can use Blessing of Freedom Icon Blessing of Freedom to increase the uptime your teammates have.

7.1. Before Gates Open

Before the gates open, you should use Beacon of Light Icon Beacon of Light on a teammate that might be the kill target for the enemy team. It does not have a cooldown, so it is acceptable if the enemy team swaps their target, but it is important to keep it active on the teammate that the enemy team is focusing.

Make sure your team has a strategy for crowd control, Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice is a strong stun that should be used on a DPS when trying to get a kill or on a healer to setup crowd control.

7.2. The Opener

The other team is going to try to force your trinket in the opener so they have an advantage later in the game. Use Divine Steed Icon Divine Steed to try to avoid incoming crowd control on you, and hold on to your trinket for as long as you can.

7.3. Healing Techniques

7.3.1. Burst Healing

Use this if the enemy team uses their cooldowns to try to kill a teammate.

  1. Use Bestow Faith Icon Bestow Faith.
  2. Use Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath. If you do not have Avenging Wrath
    1. Use Holy Avenger Icon Holy Avenger.
    2. Use Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock.
    3. Cast Holy Light Icon Holy Light.
    4. Cast Flash of Light Icon Flash of Light.
    5. Use Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock.
    6. Use Holy Light Icon Holy Light.
  3. Use Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock.
  4. Cast Holy Light Icon Holy Light.
  5. From this point on, you will want to use Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock as often as you can, and use the Infusion of Light Icon Infusion of Light procs on Holy Light Icon Holy Light. If you do not get an Infusion of Light proc, then just use Flash of Light Icon Flash of Light.

7.3.2. Sustained Damage Healing

Use this to heal sustained damage throughout the match (damage done when the other team does not have burst cooldowns available).

  1. Use Judgment Icon Judgment off cooldown to reduce the duration of Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice.
  2. Maintain Beacon of Light Icon Beacon of Light on your teammate that is being focused.
  3. Use Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock on cooldown.
  4. Use Bestow Faith Icon Bestow Faith on cooldown.
  5. Use Holy Light Icon Holy Light when you get a Critical Strike with Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock.
  6. As long as it does not put you in danger of being swapped to or dying, use Light of the Martyr Icon Light of the Martyr for single-target healing.
  7. If you can, use Tyr's Deliverance Icon Tyr's Deliverance when it comes off cooldown. The long cast time makes you succesptable to being interrupted, so try to use it when the enemy team does not have many interrupts available.

7.4. Utility

One of the unique things about Holy Paladins is the amount of utility you have. Below are all of the spells you can use on teammates and when to use them.

  • Aura Mastery Icon Aura Mastery: a strong 3-minute cooldown that should be used when your team is taking a lot of spread pressure and you need to sustain them. It is important that you try not to overlap this cooldown with others.
  • Blessing of Freedom Icon Blessing of Freedom: this is a great ability for getting away from enemies or to use on your teammates to catch up to an enemy.
  • Blessing of Protection Icon Blessing of Protection: this is a strong ability against melee classes. This should be used on a teammate that is being focused and you do not want to use cooldowns or or do not have any left. Alternatively, it can be used on yourself, but it does give you the debuff that prevents you from using Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield for 30 seconds.
  • Blessing of Sacrifice Icon Blessing of Sacrifice: use this ability when the enemy team uses multiple offensive cooldowns. This way, you use one cooldown when the other team has used 2-3 cooldowns. If you use this before a crowd control ability that can be broken from damage, it will break.

7.5. Defensive Techniques

Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield is your primary defensive cooldown. Using this ability makes you immune to everything and should be used when you or a teammate is about to die. This will guarantee that you will stay alive if you are being focused; and guarantee that you will not be interrupted if your teammate is being focused.

Divine Protection Icon Divine Protection can be used while stunned and can only be used on yourself. Use this if you are being focused and need to reduce any incoming damage.
