Azerite Traits and Essences, introduced in Battle for Azeroth, need to be chosen correctly, to ensure optimal performance. On this page, we explain how to pick your major and minor essences and which traits are best.

This page is part of our Arcane Mage PvP Guide.

1.

Azerite Essences for Arcane Mages

Essences allow players to customize their characters while adding a new ability to use. This section will cover the best overall Azerite Essences for Arcane Mages in PvP.

For a general guide to all the essences, as well as how to obtain them and increase their ranks, check out our Essence guide.

Before reading this page, you should have a good understanding of the PvP playstyle of an Arcane Mage. So we advise you to read our dedicated page on the subject.

1.1.

Major Essences

The Crucible of Flame Icon The Crucible of Flame is the best Major Essence for Arcane Mages. This essence grants the Major Power, Concentrated Flame Icon Concentrated Flame. Mages have multiple abilities that they have to cast. This gives you strong instant damage you can use very often throughout an arena match.

Conflict and Strife Icon Conflict and Strife is another great choice for Arcane Mages. Conflict Icon Conflict gives you Temporal Shield Icon Temporal Shield as a baseline ability. Because Temporal Shield is used in almost every matchup, this will free up a PvP talent and give you more choices.

Breath of the Dying Icon Breath of the Dying gives the Major power Reaping Flames Icon Reaping Flames. This is a great essence for swapping to enemies or to make it easier to kill them when they are at low health. Quick note about this ability, the cooldown reduction happens when you hit ANYONE at above 80% health. So you make sure it always has a reduced cooldown, use it on an enemy at high health and then continue hitting your main target.

1.2.

Minor Essences

In addition to having a Major Essence, you can choose two Minor Essences to place in your neck at Heart of Azeroth Levels 55 and 65.

The Crucible of Flame Icon The Crucible of Flame gives the minor ability Ancient Flame Icon Ancient Flame. This gives your spells and abilities a chance to put a dot on an enemy that took damage. This will be an overall increase to your sustained damage.

Conflict and Strife Icon Conflict and Strife grants a very powerful Versatility Minor Power. Not only do your spells have a chance to give you Versatility, but any loss of control to your character does too. This means that, if teams stun you and try to swap to you, you have additional Versatility and take less damage.

Memory of Lucid Dreams Icon Memory of Lucid Dreams gives your spells and abilities a chance to refund Mana you used and heal you. This is great for increasing your survivability and allows you to use abilities like Spellsteal Icon Spellsteal more often throughout a match.

Breath of the Dying Icon Breath of the Dying grants the minor ability Lethal Strikes Icon Lethal Strikes. This will increase your overall damage output and also help with your survivability.

Vision of Perfection Icon Vision of Perfection reduces the cooldown of Arcane Power Icon Arcane Power. This trait reduces your primary cooldown by a large amount.

2.

Azerite Traits for Arcane Mages

Azerite traits are unlocked in you helm, shoulders and chest. With each Azerite level in your neck, you get closer to unlocking the center trait in your gear. These traits vary from increasing damage of certain abilities to helping increase your survivability. Depending on what traits you use, it can completely alter your playstyle and what talents you should be using.

2.1.

Outer Ring

Below are the best Outer Ring traits.

  1. Arcane Pummeling Icon Arcane Pummeling
  2. Arcane Pressure Icon Arcane Pressure
  3. Equipoise Icon Equipoise
  4. Galvanizing Spark Icon Galvanizing Spark

If you are playing with a teammate that will struggle to kill an enemy at low health, Arcane Pressure Icon Arcane Pressure is the trait you want to have in all of your Azerite pieces. This turns your Arcane Barrage Icon Arcane Barrage into an execute-like ability. Outside of that trait, you can mix and match any of the above traits. Galvanizing Spark Icon Galvanizing Spark and Arcane Pummeling Icon Arcane Pummeling both increase your sustained damage. Equipoise Icon Equipoise is great for increasing the damage of Arcane Blast Icon Arcane Blast if you find yourself with a large surplus of Mana throughout the game.

2.2.

Middle Ring

Below are the best Middle Ring traits.

  1. Gutripper Icon Gutripper
  2. Heed My Call Icon Heed My Call
  3. Overwhelming Power Icon Overwhelming Power
  4. Earthlink Icon Earthlink

The middle and inner rings are important for additional damage. All of the traits mentioned above increase your overall damage. However, the primary traits you should be getting are Gutripper Icon Gutripper, Heed My Call Icon Heed My Call or Overwhelming Power Icon Overwhelming Power. All of these will noticeable increase your damage.

2.3.

Inner Ring

Below are the best Inner Ring traits.

  1. Resounding Protection Icon Resounding Protection
  2. Impassive Visage Icon Impassive Visage
  3. Longstrider Icon Longstrider

All of these traits give you additional ways of surviving. These are all passive, but are crucial to have.
