Enhancement Shaman PvP Rotation and Playstyle — Midnight Season 1
PvP requires you to perform various actions in the course of a duel, match, or battleground: interrupting/silencing enemies, damaging them, bursting them down, defending yourself, keeping yourself alive, etc.. It is a game mode that fully utilizes your kit, especially spells that are rarely used in PvE. On this page, we go through all the spells you need to use in PvP as an Enhancement Shaman, how you should use them, and we explain what your playstyle should be.
This page is part of our Enhancement Shaman PvP Guide.
Playstyle for Enhancement Shaman
The Enhancement Shaman should focus on maximizing their damage as much as
they can. With the Stormbringer build, your rotation centers around maximizing burst
during active windows with
Sundering and
Primordial Storm,
Hot Hand-buffed
Lava Lash,
which is enhanced by Stormbringer talents. Maximizing damage and using
instant utilities like
Wind Shear and
Grounding Totem will give windows
where your team can do devastating damaging bursts.
Before Gates Open
Use
Flametongue, and
Windfury Weapon on your weapons before
the gates open. Buff yourself with
Lightning Shield and
Skyfury.
Have a plan for who you will be mainly using your crowd control on.
Although Enhancement Shaman do lack crowd control, they still have
Hex.
If you are playing against a team that has the ability to fear your healer,
you can use
Tremor Totem. This is a great utility spell.
Set your focus target to the main enemy team member who will be likely
using crowd control like
Polymorph or
Fear.This will allow
you to know when to use
Wind Shear and
Grounding Totem to stop
the crowd control.
Use
Earth Shield on your teammate who will be focused, which is
usually the Enhancement Shaman.
Understanding Enhancement Shaman Damage
Before going into the rotation, it is best to understand how to maximize
your damage as an Enhancement Shaman. Your primary damaging abilities are
maintaining
Flame Shocks through
Voltaic Blaze, consistant
damage through
Stormstrike/
Lava Lash, and preparing
to burst the enemy.
Maintaining high auto-attack uptime is critical for generating
Maelstrom Weapon
stacks.
Playstyles For Enhancement Shaman
Sustained Damage
Sustained damage is damage you do when your burst cooldowns are not
available. With the Stormbringer build, prioritize
Lava Lash with
Hot Hand buff.
- Use and maintain
Flame Shock on the enemy as you approach. - Use
Lava Lash, generating
Maelstrom Weapon. Prioritize this when
Hot Hand
buff is active, as Stormbringer talents enhance this interaction. - Use
Stormstrike, generating
Maelstrom Weapon. - Use
Stormstrike when you get a
Stormsurge proc. - Use
Lightning Bolt if you have more than 8 stacks of
Maelstrom Weapon
stacks available. - If you cannot connect to your target use,
Frost Shock,
Flame Shock, or
Lightning Bolt at range. - Use utility like
Hex,
Healing Stream Totem,
Greater Purge,
Purge,
Earthbind Totem,
Earthgrab Totem, or
Earth Shield. - Use your burst rotation when cooldowns are available.
Burst Damage
When you have the enemy healer in crowd control, and you are trying to kill
an enemy, you use your burst damage. With the Stormbringer build, your burst windows are
optimized around
Tempest and
Hot Hand-buffed
Lava Lash.
With Totemic it is around
Surging Totem,
Sundering and
Hot Hand.
If you can, stun the kill target with
Capacitor Totem or have your team stun the
target so they cannot move or use defensives.
Stormbringer Burst Damage
- Use
Lightning Bolt with 10 stacks of
Maelstrom Weapon for the
Lightning Strikes buff. - Build to 10 stacks of
Maelstrom Weapon before starting your burst. - Use
Static Field Totem on the kill target, if talented. - Use
Doom Winds for burst damage. - Use
Sundering for burst damage, which will activate
Totem of Wrath, if talented. - Use
Primordial Storm for burst damage. - Use
Tempest to spend Maelstrom stacks as they become available. - Use
Lava Lash on cooldown, prioritizing when
Hot Hand buff is active. - Use
Stormstrike to generate more Maelstrom stacks. - Use
Lightning Bolt to spend Maelstrom stacks once at 10. - Continue cycling
Lava Lash (with
Hot Hand when available),
Lightning Bolt, and
Stormstrike to maintain pressure. - Use
Frost Shock as filler when other abilities are on cooldown.
Totemic Burst Damage
- Use
Lightning Bolt with 10 stacks of
Maelstrom Weapon for the
Lightning Strikes buff. - Build to 10 stacks of
Maelstrom Weapon before starting your burst. - Wait to have
Hot Hand proc. - Use
Static Field Totem on the kill target, if talented. - Use
Surging Totem for burst damage. - Use
Doom Winds for burst damage. - Use
Sundering for burst damage, which will activate
Totem of Wrath, if talented. - Use
Primordial Storm for burst damage. - Use
Lava Lash with
Hot Hand buff. - Use
Stormstrike to benefit from
Doom Winds. - Use
Lightning Bolt to spend Maelstrom stacks once at 10, for
Lightning Strikes buff. - Use
Stormstrike to benefit from
Doom Winds. - Continue cycling
Lava Lash (with
Hot Hand when available),
Lightning Bolt, and
Stormstrike to maintain pressure. - Use
Frost Shock as filler when other abilities are on cooldown.
Using Enhancement Shaman Skills and Abilities
In order to better explain the specific usage and benefits of the Enhancement Shaman kit, we have compiled a more detailed explanation on individual parts of your defensive and cooldown kit, so you can reach your full potential when playing Enhancement Shaman in PvP.
Defensives For Enhancement Shaman
Astral Shift
Astral Shift is the main defensive for Enhancement Shaman, which
is on a 1.5-minute cooldown. This ability decreases damage taken by 40% for 8
seconds and is not usable while stunned. It is best to communicate with your
healer and use this cooldown at high health when your opponents are using their
offensive cooldowns and your healer needs help keeping you alive.
Burrow
Burrow an immunity, similar to
Dispersion from a Shadow Priest.
While under the ground, you can be healed and can move at full movement speed. This
is particularly useful if your healer gets crowd-controlled and the Shaman does not
have
Astral Shift available.
Ghost Wolf
Ghost Wolf is an underrated ability; it allows the Shaman to
stay at 100% movement speed with any slowing debuff active. This is the way Enhancement
Shaman can kite melee opponents and stay very mobile. If you are moving
beyond a very short distance, Ghost Wolf is worth the global cooldown it
incurs. Ghost wolf can be purged, which is one of the reasons why the
Spirit Wolf talent is not as good as it could
be.
Spirit Walk
Spirit Walk acts as a root break which can allow the Enhancement
Shaman to maintain melee range to keep pressure and generating
Maelstrom Weapon
stacks.
Nature's Guardian
Nature's Guardian gives you a tool to survive stuns, something
that Restoration Shamans are normally weak at. If a team is able to make this
go off, play extra defensively until you are able to use
Nature's Guardian again.
Utility For Enhancement Shaman
Grounding Totem
Grounding Totem summon an Air Totem with 5 Health at the feet of
the caster that will redirect all harmful spells cast on a nearby party or raid
member to itself. It will not redirect area of effect spells and lasts 3
seconds. This
talent is important to help you avoid incoming crowd control. You can also use
this to stop some incoming spell damage.
Tremor Totem
Tremor Totem breaks friendly team members out of
Fear or
Mind Control
effects.
Healing Stream Totem
Healing Stream Totem should be used on cooldown to provide moderate amounts of
passive healing. This is also
increased through the 20% benefit if
Earth Shield is on
the target and will provide significant side healing.
Healing
Healing Surge is a spammable heal that
provides significant side-healing. This should be used if your healer is
stunned or crowd-controlled.
Earth Shield
Earth Shield maintain this on yourself and one teammate due to
talent
Elemental Orbit to provide side-healing to your team.
Hex Crowd-control
Hex is a curse 7-second crowd-control which can be broken by
damage. In general, you do not want to damage a target that has been hexed.
That player does still have control of their character to move out of line
of sight. This is best used on the enemy team when they have
used an offensive or defensive cooldown or the healer as part of a
crowd-control chain.
Earthbind/Earthgrab Totem
Earthbind Totem/
Earthgrab Totem is a placed totem that roots or slows
any enemies within the radius. This totem is incredibly useful and should be used on
cooldown. This helps your team's positioning. This totem can also help you
land
Capacitor Totem.
Purge/Greater Purge
Purge or
Greater Purge can be used defensively to purge off your opponent's
offensive cooldowns or Mana back cooldowns, which are purgeable. One very
important use is during a Priest's
Mind Control of your teammate.
When a Priest does this, it is better to use purge on your Mind Controlled
teammate and not use your Wind Shear interrupt. This is because purge has no
cooldown, while Wind Shear is on a 12-second cooldown.
Capacitor Totem
Capacitor Totem is placeable Totem, which can be relocated using
Totemic Projection, and can AOE stun for 3 seconds. It does require 2-seconds
to detonate so be thoughtful when placing the totem it won't be instantly killed.
Static Field Totem
Static Field Totem allows you to restrict player movement, and
move the enemy players trapped within the totem using
Totemic Projection.
Macros
It is advised to use Macros to use abilities on enemies or allies without having to target them. For this reason, we have a page dedicated to them.
