We also have default talent lists for various types of content, such as raiding or Mythic+. If you play with Warmode on, we have your PvP talents covered as well.

Best Raid Talents for Unholy Death Knight

This build is optimal for the majority of raid encounters, providing the best balance between raw Single-target damage and flexibility. For the spec tree, the flex points to consider are Unholy Pact Icon Unholy Pact and Rotten Touch Icon Rotten Touch. Ghoulish Frenzy Icon Ghoulish Frenzy is on par with Unholy Pact and is just a personal preference. Both Pact and Rotten Touch are exchanged for Improved Death Coil Icon Improved Death Coil and Menacing Magus Icon Menacing Magus in Cleave/ AoE. Improved Death Coil is only picked up at 2-3 targets however, as it starts losing value vs Epidemic Icon Epidemic at higher target counts. At 5+ targets, pick up Unholy Pact Icon Unholy Pact again (dropping Rotten Touch Icon Rotten Touch) in combination with Menacing Magus Icon Menacing Magus. Here's a summary:

  • 1 Target - Rotten Touch Icon Rotten Touch + Unholy Pact Icon Unholy Pact/Ghoulish Frenzy Icon Ghoulish Frenzy.
  • 2-3 Targets - Menacing Magus Icon Menacing Magus + Improved Death Coil Icon Improved Death Coil.
  • 4+ Targets - Menacing Magus Icon Menacing Magus + Unholy Pact Icon Unholy Pact.

For the class tree, there's a lot more realistic choice. Above the 20 point delimiter, we don't have too many mandatory spells:

  • Death Strike Icon Death Strike
  • Icebound Fortitude Icon Icebound Fortitude
  • Runic Attenuation Icon Runic Attenuation
  • Anti-Magic Barrier Icon Anti-Magic Barrier
  • Permafrost Icon Permafrost
  • Icy Talons Icon Icy Talons
  • Gloom Ward Icon Gloom Ward
  • Veteran of the Third War Icon Veteran of the Third War
  • Brittle Icon Brittle
  • Unholy Bond Icon Unholy Bond
  • Soul Reaper Icon Soul Reaper
  • Unholy Endurance Icon Unholy Endurance
  • Unholy Ground Icon Unholy Ground (pathing)

Picking these up leaves us with 5 points that we can allocate freely. Cleaving Strikes Icon Cleaving Strikes is mandatory on any cleave fight. Mind Freeze Icon Mind Freeze for any fight with interrupt being required. Blinding Sleet Icon Blinding Sleet if you need AoE CC. Wraith Walk Icon Wraith Walk and/or March of Darkness Icon March of Darkness for extra mobility. Anti-Magic Zone Icon Anti-Magic Zone and potentially Assimilation Icon Assimilation to get a nice defensive raid Cooldown. Finally, Enfeeble Icon Enfeeble for some nice passive defensive power. There is simply a lot of choice here and you can cater your utility to each encounter!

The general choice is to run Unholy Ground Icon Unholy Ground on AoE fights and swap it to Enfeeble Icon Enfeeble in pure Single Target.

The bottom part of the tree has a lot less choice. Blood Draw Icon Blood Draw can be exchanged for Runic Protection Icon Runic Protection on fights with a lot of physical damage intake. Furthermore, where you simply do not take any magic damage at all, Null Magic Icon Null Magic can be allocated to Osmosis Icon Osmosis or someplace further up the tree. Finally, when you cannot gain particular value from Unyielding Will Icon Unyielding Will, this point can be put better to use at Osmosis Icon Osmosis or, again, further up the tree.

Be sure to make use of the 'Copy Export String' button to import the best build directly into your game!

The recommended talents do not account for specific raid encounters (but you can just run it everywhere and be completely fine), which can require a specific talent or build. For a boss-by-boss breakdown of the talent choices for specific encounters, you should check out our dedicated raid page.

3.

Alternative Raid Talents for Unholy Death Knight

This build puts a lot more focus on our pet damage by picking up both Unholy Aura Icon Unholy Aura and Commander of the Dead Icon Commander of the Dead. It is generally inferior to the pure Disease build at all target counts so is primarily just a different style of play.

The spec tree has a couple of choices you make depending on fight style and preference. On pure Single Target, both Improved Death Coil Icon Improved Death Coil and Ghoulish Frenzy Icon Ghoulish Frenzy are viable alternatives to Unholy Pact Icon Unholy Pact (within 0.1% DPS). As you go to 2-3 targets, you want to pick up both Improved Death Coil Icon Improved Death Coil and Menacing Magus Icon Menacing Magus, sacrificing Unholy Pact Icon Unholy Pact and Rotten Touch Icon Rotten Touch to do so. On 4+ targets, you run Menacing Magus Icon Menacing Magus + Unholy Pact Icon Unholy Pact, giving up Improved Death Coil Icon Improved Death Coil (Epidemic Icon Epidemic devaules the Death Coil cleave at this point).

Be sure to make use of the 'Copy Export String' button to import the best build directly into your game!

Best Mythic+ Talents for Unholy Death Knight

This is your go-to Mythic+ build for all dungeons and affixes. It leverages both disease damage via Superstrain Icon Superstrain, Ebon Fever Icon Ebon Fever, and Plaguebringer Icon Plaguebringer, as well as Wounds damage with Bursting Sores Icon Bursting Sores.

The primary choice in the spec tree revolves around Vile Contagion Icon Vile Contagion. The talent does generate a huge amount of Festering Wound Icon Festering Wounds in AoE, but it takes up 3 GCDs to do so. You can opt to pick up Pestilence Icon Pestilence instead, or even Festering Scythe Icon Festering Scythe if you are keen for that ability. Pestilence Icon Pestilence is completely passive and enables quicker burst. Festering Scythe Icon Festering Scythe takes up GCDs and resources so has quite a lot of drawback.

For the class tree, we are pretty locked for the most part. Both Blinding Sleet Icon Blinding Sleet and Mind Freeze Icon Mind Freeze are mandatory, along with Cleaving Strikes Icon Cleaving Strikes. Anti-Magic Zone Icon Anti-Magic Zone and March of Darkness Icon March of Darkness can be freed up. Coldthirst Icon Coldthirst, Grip of the Dead Icon Grip of the Dead and Wraith Walk Icon Wraith Walk are good options.

Be sure to make use of the 'Copy Export String' button to import the best build directly into your game!

Rotation

Talents can and usually do, change your rotation or add new abilities to your priority. For a more detailed breakdown of how your rotation will look with optimal talents, check out our rotation page linked below.

3.

PvP Talents (War Mode)

In this section, we will rank the PvP talents that are best for leveling and doing open-world content.

  • PvP talents enabled in the outdoor world.
  • 10% increase in World Quest rewards at maximum level.
  • 10% more experience gained while leveling.
  • Earn Conquest Points, which can reward gear every week.

With the benefits of enabling War Mode for leveling and PvE content, it is recommended enabling the feature to maximize your leveling and rewards at maximum level. However, you will make yourself available for open-world PvP, and the possibility of being "ganked" while leveling or doing World Quests exists.

3.1.

Unholy Death Knight War Mode Talents

  1. Necrotic Aura Icon Necrotic Aura causes all enemies within 8 yards to take 4% increased magical damage. This has good synergy with Unholy's damage kit and also helps increase your damage as a group if you are doing content with other players.
  2. Doomburst Icon Doomburst causes your Death Coil Icon Death Coils that consume Sudden Doom Icon Sudden Doom to burst up to 2 Festering Wound Icon Festering Wounds on the target, slowing them by 45% per wound burst for 3 seconds. Solid DPS gain in PvE.
  3. Bloodforged Armor Icon Bloodforged Armor provides 3 seconds of 20% physical damage reduction whenever you press Death Strike Icon Death Strike. Solid defensive gain!
  4. Spellwarden Icon Spellwarden lowers the cooldown of Anti-Magic Shell Icon Anti-Magic Shell by 10 seconds and allows you to use it on allies. It's just a nice defensive gain due to allowing more AMS usage.
  5. Reanimation Icon Reanimation reanimates a nearby corpse, summoning a zombie with 5 health for 20 seconds, which slowly moves towards the target. If it reaches your target, it explodes, stunning all enemies within 6 yards for 3 seconds and dealing 10% of the enemy's health in Shadow damage. This ability costs 1 Rune. This can be a powerful talent for both open-world questing and leveling; however, it is difficult to use in World PvP.
  6. Dark Simulacrum Icon Dark Simulacrum places a debuff on your enemy, activating when they cast a spell that uses mana. It allows you to use that same spell for some time. Not useful in PvE content.
  7. Necromancer's Bargain Icon Necromancer's Bargain reduces the cooldown of your of your Apocalypse by 15 seconds; however, your Apocalypse does not summon ghouls but instead applies Crypt Fever to the target. Crypt fever deals up to 8% of the target's maximum health as Shadow damage over 4 seconds. Healing spells cast on the target refresh the duration of Crypt Fever. This is a strong choice for World PvP.
  8. Rot and Wither Icon Rot and Wither adds an absorption shield to any target hit by Death and Decay Icon Death and Decay for 100% of the damage amount. Useless pretty much.
  9. Necrotic Wound Icon Necrotic Wound your Festering Wound Icon Festering Wounds now apply a healing absorption when they burst, absorbing a stacking 5% of healing for 15 seconds. Good for PvP but not usable in PvE content.
  10. Strangulate Icon Strangulate silences your target for 4 seconds. Inferior to just running Asphyxiate Icon Asphyxiate (it replaces the talent) and a pretty useless talent.

Necrotic Aura Icon Necrotic Aura is by far the best PvP talent in PvE content. 4% gain to a solid proportion of our overall damage throughput! Doomburst Icon Doomburst is the second solid choice due to its nice DPS gain, helping you to consume Festering Wound Icon Festering Wounds. No other talent does much for us in PvE, and are primarily PvP choices. For a third option, we don't have much to choose from. Bloodforged Armor Icon Bloodforged Armor is generally best due to providing a good defensive gain!
