A Guide to Legendary Base Items in Shadowlands (9.2.5)
An overview of all Base Items needed to craft Legendary Armor in the Shadowlands.
Introduction
A Base Item is a blank armor template with no stats to which you can add Legendary Powers through Runecarving. Inscription Missives used during the crafting process allow you to exactly select the Secondary stats you want to have on the Legendary item.
Here is how a Base Item looks like in the game.
Legendary Armor pieces are named after the Base Items that are used to craft them, so two Legendary armor pieces will share the same name, but have different Legendary Powers attached to them.
You can find more information about how to craft Legendary Armor in Shadowlands in our Runecarving.
Base Items are not soulbound. They can be acquired from other players, your alts, or the Auction House, so you can freely trade and send them.
Base Item Changes in Dragonflight Patch 10.0.5
Legendary Base Items can be used for transmogrification in Patch 10.0.5.
Base Item Leveling Improvements in Patch 9.2.5
- Leveling up base items is now easier in Patch 9.2.5. The Experience (XP) required to reach higher base item ranks has been drastically reduced (by 400%). One craft gives 25 XP and you need 75 XP in total to advance to Rank 2.
Changes to Base Items in Patch 9.2
As of March 31, 2022, players can buy Vestige of the Devourers at Honored with The Enlightened for 5,100 Gold. Crafting professions that can create Base Items can use the Optional Reagent to increase the Item Level of a Base Item from Rank 1 to Rank 5 (Item Level 249). It cannot be used to create higher Rank Legendaries.
Base Items can be upgraded to Rank 7 (Item Level 291) in Patch 9.2 using Vestige of the Eternal. You can upgrade Rank 4 base items directly to Rank 7 using the item.

New in Patch 9.1
Base Items can be upgraded up to Rank 6 and Item Level 262 in Patch 9.1 using Vestige of Origins. Rank 3 Base Items can be upgraded to Rank 5 and Rank 4 to Rank 6 using the item.
How to Craft Base Items
Only certain Professions can craft Base Items. This includes Blacksmithing, Jewelcrafting, Leatherworking, and Tailoring.
To craft Base Items in Shadowlands, you must:
- Have a Level 60 character and unlock Runecarving.
- Cap your Profession skill by reaching 100 skill points.
When you meet all the above requirements, you can head to your Profession trainer, who will teach you how to craft Rank 1 Base Items.
Base Items Item Level
The item level of a Base Item determines the item level of your crafted Legendary Armor piece. Higher item level results in better Primary and Secondary stats on the Legendary item. Base Items have four Ranks:
- Rank 1: Item Level 190;
- Rank 2: Item Level 210;
- Rank 3: Item Level 225;
- Rank 4: Item Level 235;
- Rank 5: Item Level 249;
- Rank 6: Item Level 262;
- Rank 7: Item Level 291.
The higher the rank, the more Soul Ash will be required to create a Legendary Armor piece.
Check out our Torghast guide for more details about how to acquire Soul Ash.
Unlocking Higher Ranks of Base Items
You will unlock higher ranks of Base Items by filling up the Experience (XP) bar. Crafting the Rank 1 recipe will provide XP towards unlocking Rank 2 and higher.
XP gains have been drastically accelerated in Patch 9.2.5.
- Rank 1 Base Items (Item Level 190) give 25 XP per crafted item and the Total XP you need to unlock Rank 2 is 75, meaning you must craft 3 Rank 1 Base Items to gain access to Rank 2.
- Rank 2 Base Items (Item Level 210) give 50 XP per crafted item and the Total XP required to unlock Rank 3 is 150, so you need to craft 3 Rank 2 Base Items to learn Rank 3.
- Rank 3 Base Items (Item Level 225) give 75 XP per crafted item and the Total XP required to unlock Rank 4 is 225, so you must craft 3 pieces of Rank 2 Base Items to unlock Rank 4. Rank 3 Base Items can be upgraded to Rank 5 (Item Level 249) using Vestige of Origins.
- Rank 4 is the highest Base Item rank of Item Level 235. Vestige of Origins can be used to upgrade a Rank 4 Base Item to Rank 6 (Item Level 262).

Base Items are separated by armor type, so in total, there are "four sets" that you can acquire, based on the class you play. Note that you can use them for transmogrification in Patch 10.0.5.
