Mythic+ Tank Rankings: Beta Tier List for Midnight (Patch 12.0 / Season 1)

Last updated Yesterday at 10:53 by Petko 196 comments

From the weakest to the strongest specialization, each spec provides unique character distinction and adds value toward shaping the seasonal "meta" of Mythic+. After in-depth testing on the Midnight Beta, we have built the following progressive Tier-List based on a combination of pure tanking survivability, personal DPS, and group-added-value such as utility, mobility, and defensive options.

This list will be updated frequently as new tuning and class changes come out over the course of leading up to the season's start and beyond.

About the Beta Tier List

Our analysis provides an estimate of the current Mythic+ meta with weekly updates every Sunday on stream, until Season 1 arrives. However, it is important to remember that there will be many more changes, and what you see is not the final product. Instead, it is a progression of how each specialization performs from the start of the beta to the actual season release.

If you are interested in the DPS and Tank versions of this 12.0 Beta Tier List, check the links below!

If you are interested in our current tier list for Season 3 Patch 11.2.7, you can find that below:

Please note that anything I say is purely subjective and represents my opinion. However, it is an educated guess based on numerous hours of Beta testing and extensive discussions with some of the best theorycrafters from each of their specs. After the Beta testing is completed, we will compile all the data and create the official Tier List of Season 1 Thank you for reading, and enjoy!

Criteria of the Tier List

This tier list is entirely based on several factors, such as tank durability, group composition synergy, mobility, damage profile, self-sustain, and external party-wide cooldowns.

Please keep in mind that what you're about to read is a Progressive Tierlist of Patch 12.0 Season 1 in Midnight expansion, and it WILL change before the season is released. All opinions are subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt. I update this tier list every Sunday at 14:00 CEST live on my stream, before being uploaded on the website. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Vengeance Demon Hunter Vengeance Demon Hunter

Vengeance Demon Hunter received a complete rework as we advance to Midnight, with some of the highlights being: some of the best Apex talents across all tanks, increasing your Metamorphosis Icon Metamorphosis, Fel Devastation Icon Fel Devastation has no Demonic Icon Demonic to follow, Soul Cleave Icon Soul Cleave has now been changed to 6-target soft cap (previously hard-capped) and Fiery Brand Icon Fiery Brand received the much needed quality-of-life update. VDH went absolutely parabolical with the caps lifted from them, as that significantly improves their AoE capabilities, on top of being super tanky. They will retain their great party-wide utility while getting better everywhere else. So far into Beta, VDH is just in a league of its own, but we are far away from the release of the season so many things will change until then!

A+
Protection Paladin Protection Paladin

Protection Paladin received its fair share of changes leading up to the Midnight expansion, with some of the highlights being: less defensive value tied to the Consecration Icon Consecration, Eye of Tyr Icon Eye of Tyr removed and Guardian of Ancient Kings Icon Guardian of Ancient Kings will have the option to get an extra stack thanks to Empyrean Authority Icon Empyrean Authority. Mana management has also become much better, and only really an issue if you do try to spot-heal your allies instead of using it on yourself. The lack of a major way to induce cooldown reduction on behalf of your major CDs has hit Protection Paladin quite heavily as currently you are the weakest (squishiest) tank so far on Beta. Although the damage profile and overall utility package are looking great, a step forward towards improving durability must be present asap.

A
Protection Warrior Protection Warrior

Protection Warrior received its fair share of changes leading up to the Midnight. Protection Warrior is likely one of the few specs that didn't really get any significant shift in rotation, as the core remains quite similar. The APM requirement for Protection warrior has slightly diminished, partly because of lower haste levels during Season 1 and part of it because of the Anger Management Icon Anger Management nerfs. With the most recent buffs, it helped elevate and improve its overall performance both offensively and defensively. As every warrior spec, Protection warrior will enjoy several new utility options to help your team!

Brewmaster Monk Brewmaster Monk

Brewmaster Monk received its fair share of changes leading up to the Midnight expansion, with some of the biggest highlights being: Intense rotational pruning (much easier and less bloaty, keeping its core spells within 4-6 slots), and Dampen Harm Icon Dampen Harm and Diffuse Magic Icon Diffuse Magic (damage reduction part) removal. The core rotation will still rely on Stagger Icon Stagger / Purifying Brew Icon Purifying Brew which has always been known for. A much more rotational streamline approach was taken into consideration, and I am personally a big fan of it, sadly, it is too early to really know how strong Brewmaster will end up being but at this stage of Beta, they are definitely doing well, as both DPS and HPS/Durability profile are in a good spot.

B
Guardian Druid Guardian Druid

Guardian Druid received its fair share of changes leading up to the Midnight expansion. Overall the spec will play a lot less spammy, mostly due to the removal of Thorns of Iron Icon Thorns of Iron, and have a better optimized tree while retaining its low barrier to entry tank title. Although it is too early to talk about tuning, so far from the testing done, damage is really the only concern of the specialization, as both sustain and durability (Ursoc's Fury Icon Ursoc's Fury got recently buffed) are within the balanced range.

Blood Death Knight Blood Death Knight

Blood Death Knight received quite a few changes leading up to the Midnight expansion, with some of them being a weaker/shorter Dancing Rune Weapon Icon Dancing Rune Weapon, on top of getting an RNG DRW from your capstone apex talents and a significant rotational pruning of the spec. The barrier to entry, is arguably the lowest it's ever been with BDK, as the spec offers a much more streamlined approach compared to before.
