About Our Reviewers

This guide has been reviewed and approved by Fardion, a top Retribution Paladin. You can follow him on Twitter, and you can also reach him on the official Paladin Discord channel if you have any questions about the spec.

1. Best in Slot List

As of Tier 20 raiding, the following items constitute your "best in slot" list. Be sure to read on to find more details about trinket choice and set bonus items. Credit for this list goes to Solsacra and Mserrano.

Slot Item Source
Helm Armet of the Rotten Mind Icon Armet of the Rotten Mind The Desolate Host
Neck String of Extracted Incisors Icon String of Extracted Incisors Demonic Inquisition
Shoulders Radiant Lightbringer Shoulderguards Icon Radiant Lightbringer Shoulderguards Fallen Avatar
Cloak Cape of Mindless Fury Icon Cape of Mindless Fury Fallen Avatar
Chest Radiant Lightbringer Breastplate Icon Radiant Lightbringer Breastplate Maiden of Vigilance
Wrists Bonemeal-Crusted Armplates Icon Bonemeal-Crusted Armplates Demonic Inquisition
Gloves Radiant Lightbringer Gauntlets Icon Radiant Lightbringer Gauntlets Harjatan
Belt Soul-Render's Greatbelt Icon Soul-Render's Greatbelt Kil'jaeden
Legs Radiant Lightbringer Greaves Icon Radiant Lightbringer Greaves Mistress Sassz'ine
Boots Spiked Terrorwake Greatboots Icon Spiked Terrorwake Greatboots Trash BoE
Ring #1 Seal of the Second Duumvirate Icon Seal of the Second Duumvirate Kil'jaeden
Ring #2 Yathae's Thumb Ring Icon Yathae's Thumb Ring Sisters of the Moon

The best trinkets for you are the following. We do not list them in order because, essentially, the item level of the actual item will make all the difference. Simming your character will yield the best results.

These trinket recommendations were provided by Thordros, a Retribution theorycrafter on the Retribution Paladin Discord. You can check this analysis for a more detailed look.

2. Tier 20 Set Bonuses

The 2-piece Tier 20 Set Bonus is simply decent, while the 4-piece Set Bonus is extremely strong. That said, you will want to use even the 2-piece Bonus for the high item level of its items (as illustrated in the BiS list above).

3. Legendary Items

Legendary items have a high item level of 970, which makes them extremely strong. They are so strong, in fact, that a legendary item is always going to be worth equipping over any other item you might have in that slot.

However, there is a limitation on the number of legendary items you can have equipped at any one time (by default 1, but by now most players should be able to equip 2). Since some legendary items are better than others, if you have more items than the limit, you will have to choose which ones to equip.

Below, we will do our best to guide you through this process, as well as provide any other relevant information.

The top legendary items to use, in order, are:

  1. Whisper of the Nathrezim Icon Whisper of the Nathrezim
  2. Chain of Thrayn Icon Chain of Thrayn
  3. Liadrin's Fury Unleashed Icon Liadrin's Fury Unleashed
  4. Soul of the Highlord Icon Soul of the Highlord
  5. Ashes to Dust Icon Ashes to Dust
  6. Scarlet Inquisitor's Expurgation Icon Scarlet Inquisitor's Expurgation
  7. Kil'jaeden's Burning Wish Icon Kil'jaeden's Burning Wish

Any combination of Whisper of the Nathrezim Icon Whisper of the Nathrezim, Liadrin's Fury Unleashed Icon Liadrin's Fury Unleashed, Chain of Thrayn Icon Chain of Thrayn, and Soul of the Highlord Icon Soul of the Highlord is good.

The other legendaries considerably worse, and if you have to choose between one of them, simply choose based on personal preference. That said, simming your character to find out the best combination for you is always recommended.

4. Loot Competition

Regarding the loot you will get from raid or dungeon bosses, you will compete with other classes in the following cases:

Item Type Competing Classes
Tier Tokens Demon Hunters, Holy/Protection Paladins, Priests, and Warlocks
Plate Armor Death Knights, Holy/Protection Paladins, and Warriors
  • Amulets
  • Cloaks
  • Rings
Trinkets Frost/Unholy Death Knights and Arms/Fury Warriors
