Quick-Start Guide for Devourer Demon Hunter — The War Within (11.2.7)
On this page, you will find everything you need to get started on the Midnight Beta with your Devourer Demon Hunter. This covers talent builds, rotational concepts, and more!
Welcome to our Quick Start Guide for Devourer! This page is aimed at players who have just got access to Beta, and want to jump straight into testing without in-depth explanations. It will cover some quick build loadouts, provide you with key rotational building blocks, and some extra tips to help ease you into Midnight's brand new Demon Hunter offering.
The Basics of Devourer Demon Hunter
The Devourer rotation is simple on the surface, but has some hidden depth
when it comes to managing its key mechanic -
Void Metamorphosis. As a caster,
it's essential to always be casting, making use of its highly mobile toolkit.
Three simple rules that cover the core pillars are:
- Build Fury - Devourer has two resources,
and both are important. Fury is generated by
Consume and many talents,
or from gathering
Shattered Souls. This is spent on
Void Ray
while outside of
Void Metamorphosis, but it drains rapidly
while inside to sustain your transformation. - Spend Souls - Souls are generated via a number
of talents, or with
Consume casts. These can either be collected by
running over them or using
Reap to gather them from range. After
reaching 50, you can transform into
Void Metamorphosis, greatly
empowering your abilities. While transformed, every 30 Souls gathered allows you
to cast one
Collapsing Star. - Maximize Void Metamorphosis - While transformed,
your Fury drain rapidly increases, with the goal being to cast as many
Collapsing Stars as possible to make use of
Impending Apocalypse.
To help with this,
Void Ray,
Collapsing Star and
Voidblade (with talents) briefly pause the drain to catch back up.
Devourer is built around balancing two different playstyles. While outside
Void Metamorphosis cycling Fury to cast
Void Ray, generating
a large amount of Souls to build to your transformation. While inside, it's
about carefully balancing your Fury to sustain your form, while casting as many
Collapsing Stars as possible before time runs out. You'll eventually
build an intuition on the general flow, and know when you'll likely drop out before
your next
Collapsing Star to allow you to build up some reserve Souls.
Once you get used to the push-and-pull of these resources, it rewards you with a
satisfying build up into big payoff playstyle, with a surprising amount of depth.
Recommended Builds for Devourer Demon Hunter
As this is just a guide for the Beta test, some of our selections here may change frequently as things are updated. If you're looking for loadouts that focus on alternative Hero Talents or setups, you can check our Talent Page:
As it stands right now,
Annihilator is a strong recommendation in
both Single-Target and AoE. It's simpler to execute, more flexible, and
has smoother resource management.
Void-Scarred can still work, but doesn't
have the same benefits while also adding in extra gameplay requirements. Below are
some quick import codes for builds suited to both encounter styles:

Single-Target Talents for Devourer Demon Hunter
Currently in Beta, while Devourer has two Hero tree options,
Annihilator
stands above the other due to a far clearer (and well-tuned) loop. Its benefits
directly elevate the main goal - cycling Fury, Souls, and extending
Void Metamorphosis.
This is to make use of
Emptiness - the stronger choice node at the
bottom - and to leverage
Impending Apocalypse.
It adds in an extra twist, requiring you to play around
Voidfall.
This is done by casting
Reap whenever you reach three stacks, so
doesn't add much in the way of extra complexity.

Void-Scarred
build, check our talent page:

AoE Talents for Devourer Demon Hunter
Currently in Beta, while things are a bit closer between the two trees compared
to Single-Target,
Annihilator still pulls ahead for Devourer. It
cycles through Fury to cast
Void Ray aggressively, while also
being able to enter
Void Metamorphosis to utilize the
Midnight
Apex talent more often. It takes
Soul Glutton to have more access to
Void Metamorphosis for the more frequent pulls in dungeons, while also
providing more
Voidfall triggers.
It adds an extra twist, the
Voidfall keystone. Much like in Single-Target,
this is simply consumed by casting
Reap whenever you reach three stacks.
There's no unique considerations to mix in there for AoE.

Void-Scarred
build, check our talent page:

Devourer Demon Hunter DPS Rotation
Due to this being a quick-start page, here we'll be providing some building blocks that detail key rotational concepts for Single-Target that you can put into practice. If you're instead looking for a full-fledged priority list, you can jump over to our Rotation page, which provides detailed breakdowns for each build.
Single Target Breakdown
In Single-Target when playing
Annihilator, everything is built around
building toward, and then executing your
Void Metamorphosis windows
effectively. These can often be quite long due to
Emptiness, ideally
reaching 4
Collapsing Stars, so requires good management. Here's a
brief breakdown of the key steps when getting started:
-
Build & Spend Fury -
This is generated via
Consume, or by gathering
Shattered Souls.
While outside of
Void Metamorphosis, cast
Void Ray whenever you reach 100 Fury.
While inside, generate as much as you can to sustain the transformation. -
Generate & Collect Souls -
Any damage has a small chance to spawn a Soul.
Consume generates 1, while
Void Ray spawns many via
Waste Not.
These are collected by contact, or gathered up from range by casting
Reap.
-
Execute Void Metamorphosis -
This can be cast once you gather 50 Souls.
Every 30 Souls gathered while active allows you to cast
Collapsing Star. Cast as many as possible.
Use
Void Ray to pause your Fury drain when it threatens to cancel your form.
-
Consume Voidfall -
Every three stacks of
Voidfall, cast
Reap.
Consume has a 35% chance, and
Void Ray 100% chance to generate a stack.
Void Metamorphosis generates three, so
Reap before entry if you have three stacks.
When learning the flow, it's best to break up the steps to get used to the cadence. We recommend focusing on things in this order:
AoE Breakdown
In AoE, it still follows many of the same rules learned in Single-Target with
Annihilator. It does, however, lean into more frequent, shorter
Void Metamorphosis windows using
Soul Glutton. Key things
that change in AoE are:
-
Execute Void Metamorphosis -
This can be cast once you gather 35 Souls.
Every 30 Souls gathered while active allows you to cast
Collapsing Star.
Manage your windows between pulls, aiming to cast as many stars as possible. -
Utilize Eradicate -
Eradicate replaces
Reap following
Void Ray casts.
In AoE, the only time
Reap is cast is with an
Eradicate proc.
Void Ray is cast frequently, so it's almost always available.
When it comes to AoE, a lot of the core principles can be learned by practicing Single-Target. We'd recommend focusing on things in the following order:
Defense & Utility Spells for Devourer Demon Hunter
While the prune in Midnight has hit many specializations, Devourer still has some tricks up its sleeve to deal with different situations. It's got a decent defensive suite, and an excellent mobility toolkit.
Defensive Tools
| Ability | Description/Effect |
|---|---|
| Devourer's defensive tool, providing 25% damage reduction for 10
seconds on a 1-minute cooldown. Can be augmented with a second charge via the
|
|
| Causes you and any ally stood within the 8-yard pool created to have a 15% chance (increased to 30% in a party) to avoid any instance of damage. Lasts 8 seconds, has a long 5-minute cooldown (reduced by talents), but is a good defensive and utility cooldown combined into one. | |
| Provides a very brief 6% HP shield after casting |
|
| While not an active tool, Devourer has a good amount of built-in Leech
that becomes even stronger during |
|
| Provides 15% Magic damage reduction for 12 seconds after interrupting an enemy. |
Mobility Tools
| Ability | Description/Effect |
|---|---|
| Devourer's answer to Havoc's |
|
| Causes you to leap backward, with a 25-second cooldown. Some talents within the Devourer tree can augment this to become part of your offensive rotation, but its baseline effect is simply a movement tool. | |
| Double-jumping will propel you forward faster than standard movement speed,
meaning you always have a tool available. With the new |
|
| While not an active tool, any Mastery rating you have will also increase your movement speed. |
Utility Tools
| Ability | Description/Effect |
|---|---|
| Devourer's interrupt ability, with a 15-second cooldown and 5-second lockout. | |
| Deals light Cosmic damage and stuns nearby enemies for 2 seconds, with a 45-second cooldown. Very flexible AoE stopping tool. | |
| Incapacitates enemies in the target area for 15 seconds after a brief delay, with a 2-minute cooldown. While not as flexible as your AoE stun, still an extra useful stop. | |
| Dispels one magic effect from your target, with a 10-second cooldown. Like all Demon Hunter specializations, it has access to an offensive dispel. | |
| Incapacitates the targeted demon, beast, or humanoid for 1 minute. While this has a limit of one, it serves as hard-CC on enemies that also won't draw aggro from nearby players while it's under this effect. |
Devourer Demon Hunter Stat Priorities
We are very early in the Beta process, so this area here is very much an estimation. Things are fluctuating very frequently here, and since gearing on the Beta is very loose, don't spend too much time overthinking your stats - just try to enjoy testing!
The current Devourer stat priority is as follows:
- Intellect;
- Haste;
- Mastery;
- Critical Strike;
- Versatility;
Currently, Haste is extremely valuable, making it far smoother to navigate
longer
Void Metamorphosis. Due to recent nerfs to it's scaling, Mastery
is no longer on par with Haste. While it is still quite strong, providing a large
multiplier when transformed, Haste has now overtaken it.
While Critical Strike has some extra scaling with
Calamitous,
it's value is offset by
Midnight which stops it from being as valuable
here. Versatility remains weakest, though it does provide additional defense.
