Talent Cheat Sheet for Devourer Demon Hunter

In the current phase of testing, Devourer has seen a number of changes to reach its current state over the course of the Alpha. Some aspects are still being iterated upon, but our current recommendations for different Encounter styles are as follows:

  • Single Target - Annihilator has the edge due to stronger passive benefits to key spells. It's also able to leverage Emptiness Icon Emptiness for extended Void Metamorphosis Icon Void Metamorphosis windows better, making it the recommendation.
  • AoE - While the gap is smaller here, Annihilator still takes the edge over Void-Scarred due to the stronger tuning of its key spells. Voidfall Icon Voidfall transitions well into AoE, and can cycle Souls much faster.

Due to the current Beta tuning, Annihilator is best for both Single-target and AoE encounters. Its faster resource generation for both Fury and Souls, alongside amplifying the more powerful components of the Devourer toolkit currently place it above Void-Scarred. This instead leans heavily into the melee abilities available, but are tuned in a way that the payoff isn't quite there yet. Bear in mind though, we're still early on in a testing environment, so why not give both trees a try and get a feel for how Devourer plays in Midnight!

Devourer Demon Hunter Talent Builds

Due to it still being a Beta test, we've provided builds for each Hero Talent in both encounter styles, so give them a try to get a feel for how Devourer plays. You can use the selector tool to choose your Hero tree, and the navigation buttons to open up a loadout and explanation of the playstyle.

Anywhere you see the recommended icon on this page, this means it is the recommended choice

Annihilator Caster Only Build

While Annihilator strongly encourages playing with a melee hybrid build currently on Beta realms, we realize (similar to Havoc no-mover builds) that not everyone wants to mix in melee options. As such, this build provides the best caster-only setup, which can only be achieved with this Hero Tree.

Keep in mind that sacrificing the entire melee package does have a real downside for Devourer, limiting your ability to extend Void Metamorphosis Icon Void Metamorphosis. On the plus side, this is a very streamlined experience that limits some of the risk of having to weave in movement tools, instead focusing purely on the caster tools available to it. Some additional notes are:

  • Scythe's Embrace Icon Scythe's Embrace is taken instead of Duty Eternal Icon Duty Eternal (due to the melee charge effect of Voidblade Icon Voidblade). This does change the use cases for Reap Icon Reap, reducing the active Souls requirement to 4 for Soulshaper Icon Soulshaper.
  • The melee suite on the bottom left capstone area is dropped, and in exchange Voidglare Boon Icon Voidglare Boon and both points in Voidrage Icon Voidrage are taken instead.

Hero Talents for Devourer Demon Hunter

Alongside being a brand new specialization, Devourer also brings with it a new Hero tree - Annihilator. This is shared with Vengeance, alongside having Void-Scarred shared with Havoc's Fel-Scarred. In the two tabs below, we've covered the major talents and key effects that influence your build depending on your selection:

4.1.

Annihilator Hero Tree for Devourer

Annihilator focuses on its keystone effect, Voidfall Icon Voidfall. A variety of Devourer abilities (most importantly Consume Icon Consume and Void Ray Icon Void Ray) grant a stack, and upon reaching three, your next Reap Icon Reap cast will consume them. Each stack consumed calls down a powerful Void Meteor, dealing heavy Cosmic damage to targets and generating 2 Soul Fragments. The playstyle is relatively simple, only requiring you to slot in additional Reap Icon Reap casts to consume stacks as they cap out.

For defense and mobility, Phase Shift Icon Phase Shift grants 2% damage reduction per stack of Voidfall Icon Voidfall present, with Final Hour Icon Final Hour allowing it to persist after you consume them. Path to Oblivion Icon Path to Oblivion adds 3% movement speed on top of that, though adding a third charge to Shift Icon Shift with State of Matter Icon State of Matter is generally preferrable.

4.1.

Void-Scarred Hero Tree for Devourer

Void-Scarred provides a variety of benefits during your Void Metamorphosis Icon Void Metamorphosis effect. Most importantly, Voidblade Icon Voidblade, Hungering Slash Icon Hungering Slash, and The Hunt Icon The Hunt are upgraded into more powerful versions while active. Additionally, the first cast of each of these trigger a Voidsurge Icon Voidsurge for extra AoE Cosmic damage. This slots in over the regular Devourer playstyle, but heavily encourages using a hybrid melee approach, leaping in and out of range to activate these effects.

For the three choice nodes on the tree, there are the following options:

  • Wave of Debilitation Icon Wave of Debilitation vs. Pursuit of Angriness Icon Pursuit of Angriness - both are niche effects, with Pursuit of Angriness Icon Pursuit of Angriness generally being better for the small amount of extra mobility vs. the extra CC utility of Wave of Debilitation Icon Wave of Debilitation.
  • Set Fire to the Pain Icon Set Fire to the Pain vs. Improved Soul Rending Icon Improved Soul Rending - this is a choice between passive damage reduction or self sustain. Generally, staggering some damage with Set Fire to the Pain Icon Set Fire to the Pain so you can leech it back is the preferred choice but it's quite minor.
  • Student of Suffering Icon Student of Suffering vs. Flamebound Icon Flamebound - due to the current tuning state of melee abilities as Devourer, the benefits of Flamebound Icon Flamebound focusing on Hungering Slash Icon Hungering Slash is pretty weak. Student of Suffering Icon Student of Suffering on the other hand significantly improves Fury generation alongside extra Mastery, making it the preferred choice.
