General Information

This page is a gear reference for Holy Paladins. It lists your best items and Legendaries, gives you gearing advice, and shows you how you will be competing for loot with other classes.

About Our Reviewer

This guide has been reviewed and approved by Rhyno, a Holy Paladin moderator from the Hammer of Wrath Discord channel and a member of the Convert to Raid superguild on Aerie Peak-US.

1. Best in Slot List

While we do not currently believe a Best in Slot list is worth adding, we do feel it important to mention that the Drape of Shame Icon Drape of Shame from the Maiden of Virtue in Return to Karazhan is an excellent cloak. Its effect is worth around 30-35 item levels, meaning that an item level 870 cloak can compete with regular 900-905 cloaks.

2. Tier 20 Set Bonuses

The Tier 20 Set Bonuses for Holy Paladins are overall fairly weak. You will still want to get the 2-piece Bonus simply to reduce the cooldown of Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn, but the 4-piece Bonus is mostly wasted on overhealing and may not be worth using over having higher item level non-tier gear. Moreover, if there are 2 Holy Paladins with 4-piece Bonuses in the same raid, their Bonuses will be effectively useless.

It is also worth noting that you do not want to hold on to either of the Tier 19 Set Bonuses and combine them with Tier 20 Set Bonuses.

3. Legendary Items

Legendary items have a high item level of 970, which makes them extremely strong. They are so strong, in fact, that a legendary item is always going to be worth equipping over any other item you might have in that slot.

However, there is a limitation on the number of legendary items you can have equipped at any one time (by default 1, but by now most players should be able to equip 2). Since some legendary items are better than others, if you have more items than the limit, you will have to choose which ones to equip.

Below, we will do our best to guide you through this process, as well as provide any other relevant information.

Below, we rank the legendary items available to Holy Paladins. We have two separate lists depending on whether you are attempting raid or Mythic+ content.

3.1. Raiding

  1. Ilterendi, Crown Jewel of Silvermoon Icon Ilterendi, Crown Jewel of Silvermoon is probably the best legendary since it synergizes well with Judgment of Light Icon Judgment of Light and does a large amount of buffed healing during its 5-second buff window.
  2. Velen's Future Sight Icon Velen's Future Sight is another very strong legendary. The on-use ability should be used as much as possible during a given encounter, as long as there is damage that needs to be healed. The overhealing component of the ability is useful to recycle some otherwise wasted healing during the buff window, but the Paladin should not intentionally overheal for any reason.
  3. Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus Icon Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus provides great personal survivability and is a solid choice for any progression raiding encounter.
  4. Soul of the Highlord Icon Soul of the Highlord is a good legendary choice. The ring's effect gives you the Divine Purpose Icon Divine Purpose talent, so you should choose a different Tier 5 talent (either of the other two) if this legendary is used. This legendary will be more effective on fights where Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn can be used effectively, because you will receive more total free casts from the ring if both Light of Dawn and Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock are well utilised.
  5. Maraad's Dying Breath Icon Maraad's Dying Breath makes Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn buff your next cast of Light of the Martyr Icon Light of the Martyr to heal for 10% more per person healed by Light of Dawn, and heal your Beacon target(s). You take 50% of the base healing done by Light of the Martyr as damage, but the bonus healing from Maraad's Dying Breath does not add additional damage dealt. Overall, this legendary transforms Light of the Martyr into a cheap, powerful spot heal that can help save Mana and add additional healing and utility. Ideally, you should not cast Light of the Martyr more than Light of Dawn, as an unbuffed Light of the Martyr is very inefficient. Additionally, you should not cast Light of the Martyr when the damage taken from it could put you at risk of death.
  6. Chain of Thrayn Icon Chain of Thrayn is a mediocre raid legendary. Judgment of Light Icon Judgment of Light currently outperforms Sanctified Wrath Icon Sanctified Wrath in healing done, so some talent synergy is lost because of this. Additionally, the bonuses from Chain of Thrayn typically cause healing spells cast during Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath to overheal more often, thereby reducing its overall strength.
  7. Obsidian Stone Spaulders Icon Obsidian Stone Spaulders are weak when you have the Tier 20 Set Bonuses, as these interfere with the added Beacon healing, greatly reducing the effectiveness of this item.
  8. Sephuz's Secret Icon Sephuz's Secret is typically a poor choice for raids. It works very well during encounters where you dispel very often. It is very difficult to proc the ability from crowd control or interrupts, as most raid bosses are immune to crowd control and Holy Paladins no longer have an interrupt. Currently, very few encounters provide a consistent way to proc the ability, so Sephuz is not a good choice for most encounters.
  9. Tyr's Hand of Faith Icon Tyr's Hand of Faith lowers the cooldown of Lay on Hands Icon Lay on Hands by 70%. Most encounters are not long enough to provide for more than 2-3 casts of Lay on Hands, however, so the added healing and utility from this legendary is not very useful.
  10. The Topless Tower Icon The Topless Tower gives Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn a 10% chance to grant you Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath for 8 seconds. If you already have an Avenging Wrath buff, the duration is extended by 8 seconds. As the proc chance is low, and it is not a consistent effect, the overall additional healing done by this legendary is mediocre at best.
  11. Uther's Guard Icon Uther's Guard is a very weak legendary that adds some healing to your Blessings. The healing does not heal the Beacon target(s), and combined with the Mana cost of the Blessings, the healing added by this legendary is inefficient overall. The increased duration is also rarely useful.
  12. Aggramar's Stride Icon Aggramar's Stride provides no healing increases at all. This legendary should only be taken if you very greatly benefit from the movement speed on a specific encounter.
  13. Rethu's Incessant Courage Icon Rethu's Incessant Courage is poorly itemized and its effect are typically only useful for outdoor content.

3.2. Mythic+

  1. Chain of Thrayn Icon Chain of Thrayn synergizes well with Sanctified Wrath Icon Sanctified Wrath and turns Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath into an exceptionally strong healing and DPS cooldown in dungeon content. This is by far the best Mythic+ legendary.
  2. Sephuz's Secret Icon Sephuz's Secret is much easier to proc in dungeon content due to your crowd control talents in Tier 3 and the large amount of dispellable abilities present. With a high uptime, Sephuz provides great mobility to your otherwise slow class and additional Haste to reduce healing spell cast times and cooldowns.
  3. Velen's Future Sight Icon Velen's Future Sight is weaker in dungeons than in raids, but the healing provided by it in dungeon content is still worth noting. It acts as an additional healing cooldown to fill any gaps in buffs during trash packs and help keep the group topped off.
  4. Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus Icon Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus still provides strong personal survivability in dungeons. However, it does not assist in healing or protecting the group, and Holy Paladins already possess many strong damage reductions and mitigation tools. Overall, Prydaz is a mediocre choice in dungeon content.
  5. Tyr's Hand of Faith Icon Tyr's Hand of Faith is mediocre in dungeons. The greatly reduced cooldown of Lay on Hands Icon Lay on Hands allows you to save lives and clean up mistakes easily and more often. Tyr's only provides additional utility, while other legendaries can provide much larger healing and damage bonuses that can be utilised more often.
  6. Maraad's Dying Breath Icon Maraad's Dying Breath is useful in dungeon content since it turns one Light of the Martyr Icon Light of the Martyr cast per Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn cast into a cheap, powerful spot heal that can be used on the move. However, the Mana savings in dungeons is insignificant and the damage taken from Light of the Martyr can be dangerous. Overall, Maraad's provides additional utility more than anything.
  7. Uther's Guard Icon Uther's Guard is generally a poor choice in dungeon content. The healing done by your Blessings is not very large and the increased duration is rarely necessarily.
  8. Soul of the Highlord Icon Soul of the Highlord grants you the Divine Purpose Icon Divine Purpose talent, which is not a very strong ability in terms of healing or DPS in dungeon content. Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn is not extremely powerful in dungeon content, and the proc relies heavily on randomness.
  9. The Topless Tower Icon The Topless Tower synergises well with Sanctified Wrath Icon Sanctified Wrath for DPS, but the proc is unreliable and Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn is less useful in dungeon content to begin with.
  10. Ilterendi, Crown Jewel of Silvermoon Icon Ilterendi, Crown Jewel of Silvermoon relies heavily on Judgment of Light Icon Judgment of Light to justify the global cooldown, and as Judgment of Light is a very bad talent in dungeons, so Ilterendi is a bad legendary.
  11. Obsidian Stone Spaulders Icon Obsidian Stone Spaulders requires both the Paladin and the Beacon(s) to be injured to provide any healing at all. Since Beacon of Virtue Icon Beacon of Virtue is the most common Beacon for dungeon content, you typically will not have a permanent Beacon available for the effect to heal. This makes the Spaulders one of the worst dungeon legendaries.
  12. Aggramar's Stride Icon Aggramar's Stride provides no healing and very little utility. It should not be chosen over any of the other legendaries from a healing perspective.
  13. Rethu's Incessant Courage Icon Rethu's Incessant Courage is poorly itemised and the healing effect is very small. It should not be chosen over any other legendaries.

4. Loot Competition

Regarding the loot you will get from raid or dungeon bosses, you will compete with other classes in the following cases:

Plate Armor Death Knights, Protection/Retribution Paladins, and Warriors
