General Information

This page is a gear reference for Holy Paladins. It lists your best items and Legendaries, gives you gearing advice, and shows you how you will be competing for loot with other classes.

The other pages of our Holy Paladin guide can be accessed from the table of contents on the right.

About Our Reviewer

This guide has been reviewed and approved by Gamko, a top healer who raids in Serenity, one of the best guilds in the world.

1. Best in Slot List

While we do not currently believe a Best in Slot list is worth adding, we do feel it important to mention that the Drape of Shame Icon Drape of Shame from the Maiden of Virtue in Return to Karazhan is the best cloak for Holy Paladins, regardless of its item level.

2. Tier 19 Set Bonuses

Both the 2-piece and 4-piece Tier 19 Set Bonuses are rather disappointing for Holy Paladins. The 2-piece is still worth having eventually, but the 4-piece is worse and possibly not even worth taking depending on the quality of the item you would have to replace.

3. Legendary Items

Legendary items have a high item level of 910, which makes them extremely strong. They are so strong, in fact, that a legendary item is always going to be worth equipping over any other item you might have in that slot.

However, there is a limitation on the number of legendary items you can have equipped at any one time (by default 1, but by now most players should be able to equip 2). Since some legendary items are better than others, if you have more items than the limit, you will have to choose which ones to equip.

Below, we will do our best to guide you through this process, as well as provide any other relevant information.

Below is our ranking of the legendary items available to Holy Paladins.

  1. Obsidian Stone Spaulders Icon Obsidian Stone Spaulders: this is probably the best legendary item, possibly tied with the ring (see below); the Obsidian Stone Spaulders have the advantage of being easy to use, while the ring may be better when you can use the Judgment of Light Icon Judgment of Light talent.
  2. Ilterendi, Crown Jewel of Silvermoon Icon Ilterendi, Crown Jewel of Silvermoon: this will increase the healing of the next 3 spells you cast (3 instant casts or 2 instant casts in between which is one spell with a cast time); if for some reason you are unable to do this, you should fit in a Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn and a Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock. This legendary is almost as good as the Obsidian Stone Spaulders Icon Obsidian Stone Spaulders, if not just as good (see above).
  3. Chain of Thrayn Icon Chain of Thrayn: this is a very good legendary item. Its drawback is that to make the best use of it, you should be using the Sanctified Wrath Icon Sanctified Wrath talent, while having the (arguably better) Ilterendi, Crown Jewel of Silvermoon Icon Ilterendi, Crown Jewel of Silvermoon requires you to use the Judgment of Light Icon Judgment of Light talent instead.
  4. Velen's Future Sight Icon Velen's Future Sight: this is a really solid choice. While perhaps not quite as good as the belt/ring, it can still compete with them and is generally strong.
  5. Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus Icon Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus: this neck provides a significant survivability gain over the course of an encounter, making it a great overall choice.
  6. Maraad's Dying Breath Icon Maraad's Dying Breath: this is a mediocre legendary item. It is weaker than the above-listed items, and it also has the disadvantage of competing against the very strong Drape of Shame Icon Drape of Shame.
  7. Sephuz's Secret Icon Sephuz's Secret: this ring is decent, particularly if the encounter allows you to trigger it often through dispels. Overall, though, it is one of the weaker choices (especially due to its itemization).
  8. Uther's Guard Icon Uther's Guard: this does not take up a tier slot and increases the duration of your Blessings by a substantial amount.
  9. Aggramar's Stride Icon Aggramar's Stride: while movement speed in general is great, this item is not good enough to be worth choosing over most other legendaries. That said, if some encounter greatly requires movement speed, it could be useful then.
  10. Tyr's Hand of Faith Icon Tyr's Hand of Faith: are a weak choice in general, though they perform slightly better in Mythic+ dungeons.
  11. Rethu's Incessant Courage Icon Rethu's Incessant Courage: this is a weak item. It is only good for the sockets it has, but generally its stats are bad and it is not desirable.

4. Loot Competition

Regarding the loot you will get from raid or dungeon bosses, you will compete with other classes in the following cases:

Item Type Competing Classes
Tier Tokens Demon Hunters, Protection/Retribution Paladins, Priests, and Warlocks
Plate Armor Death Knights, Protection/Retribution Paladins, and Warriors
  • Amulets
  • Cloaks
  • Rings
Everyone
Trinkets Restoration Druids, Mistweaver Monks, Discipline/Holy Priests, and Restoration Shamans
