General Information

This page is a gear reference for Holy Priests. It lists your best items and Legendaries, gives you gearing advice, and shows you how you will be competing for loot with other classes.

The other pages of our Holy Priest guide can be accessed from the table of contents on the right.

About Our Reviewer

This guide has been reviewed and approved Niphyr, a generally knowledgeable, long-time healing Priest and theorycrafter. You can follow him on Twitter.

1. Best in Slot List

We are currently not recommending a best in slot list, but we do make some important trinket recommendations (below).

2. Trinket Recommendations

For throughput trinkets (presuming equal item level), we have a comprehensive list below, including the most commonly obtained trinkets from Nighthold, Tomb of Sargeras, and of course stat sticks.

  1. Velen's Future Sight Icon Velen's Future Sight
  2. Sea Star of the Depthmother Icon Sea Star of the Depthmother
  3. The Deceiver's Grand Design Icon The Deceiver's Grand Design
  4. Archive of Faith Icon Archive of Faith
  5. Darkmoon Deck: Hellfire Icon Darkmoon Deck: Hellfire
  6. Unstable Arcanocrystal Icon Unstable Arcanocrystal
  7. Perfectly Preserved Cake Icon Perfectly Preserved Cake
  8. Barbaric Mindslaver Icon Barbaric Mindslaver
  9. Intellect + Mastery stat trinket
  10. Intellect + Critical Strike stat trinket
  11. Intellect + Versatility stat trinket
  12. Intellect + Haste stat trinket
  13. Etraeus' Celestial Map Icon Etraeus' Celestial Map or Dreadstone of Endless Shadows Icon Dreadstone of Endless Shadows
  14. Chalice of Moonlight Icon Chalice of Moonlight
  15. Charm of the Rising Tide Icon Charm of the Rising Tide

We do no longer suggest any of the Emerald Nightmare trinkets at all, even if they have a comparable item level.

You can also visit this spreadsheet for up to date trinket ratings.

We do not suggest using Mana trinkets unless the encounter has a length of 8-10+ minutes. If you do use one, the best 3 are Darkmoon Deck: Promises Icon Darkmoon Deck: Promises (AoE), Amalgam's Seventh Spine Icon Amalgam's Seventh Spine (heavy single target damage), and Fluctuating Energy Icon Fluctuating Energy.

3. Tier 20 Set Bonuses

The 2-piece Tier 20 Set Bonus is quite solid, while the 4-piece Bonus is incredibly valuable and should be obtained as soon as possible.

Keeping the Tier 19 Set Bonuses is not something you should look to do; while the 2-piece is great, the 4-piece is quite weak and should be replaced as soon as you get Tier 20 Bonuses (and the 2-piece is not strong enough to compete with higher item level gear that comes with Tier 20).

4. Legendary Items

Legendary items have a high item level of 970, which makes them extremely strong. They are so strong, in fact, that a legendary item is always going to be worth equipping over any other item you might have in that slot.

However, there is a limitation on the number of legendary items you can have equipped at any one time (by default 1, but by now most players should be able to equip 2). Since some legendary items are better than others, if you have more items than the limit, you will have to choose which ones to equip.

Below, we will do our best to guide you through this process, as well as provide any other relevant information.

X'anshi, Shroud of Archbishop Benedictus Icon X'anshi, Shroud of Archbishop Benedictus turns Spirit of Redemption Icon Spirit of Redemption into a viable way of dumping Mana into healing, as well as a means of recovery without the use of one of your raid's valuable combat resses. This legendary opens up the door for misuse, but if properly used, this item will be very valuable.

Velen's Future Sight Icon Velen's Future Sight is a good trinket. It is important to use it frequently, and it is particularly powerful when paired with Divine Hymn Icon Divine Hymn or used with Holy Word: Sanctify Icon Holy Word: Sanctify and Prayer of Healing Icon Prayer of Healing spam.

Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus Icon Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus will easily make up a sizeable amount of damage over the course of an encounter that will not need to be healed. This item is extremely powerful for a raid, preventing damage and saving healer Mana.

Entrancing Trousers of An'juna Icon Entrancing Trousers of An'juna is a great legendary due to it allowing you to increase the duration of your Renew Icon Renews by 6 seconds, when you have the Benediction Icon Benediction talent. Without this talent, you should not use this item.

Muze's Unwavering Will Icon Muze's Unwavering Will provides 15% reduced cast time on Flash Heal Icon Flash Heal, Prayer of Healing Icon Prayer of Healing and Heal Icon Heal, which makes this a particularly powerful mid-tier legendary, especially when paired with Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus Icon Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus, as it helps keep your health above the 75% threshold.

The Alabaster Lady Icon The Alabaster Lady has potential but due to it being random and being able to proc during periods of low healing a lot of the potential value is lost. When this legendary does proc, focus on casting Holy Words and Serendipity Icon Serendipity, generating spells to get the most out of it if there is healing to be done.

Rammal's Ulterior Motive Icon Rammal's Ulterior Motive is poor because we currently do not typically cast enough Flash Heal Icon Flash Heal on most encounters for this legendary to be of value.

Celumbra, the Night's Dichotomy Icon Celumbra, the Night's Dichotomy has a mediocre effect which is difficult to manage. Unless you have received no good legendaries, you should avoid crafting/purchasing this item.

Norgannon's Foresight Icon Norgannon's Foresight has a nice bonus in its effect, but overall it does not have a big enough impact for it to be considered strong.

Sephuz's Secret Icon Sephuz's Secret is not an outstanding legendary item, but if the encounter allows you to frequently dispel, which triggers the item, it can be very strong.

Al'maiesh, the Cord of Hope Icon Al'maiesh, the Cord of Hope is not strong, since Holy Words are mostly used on cooldown, so its effect will not occur very often.

Phyrix's Embrace Icon Phyrix's Embrace is a poor legendary item that should not be considered.

Soul of the High Priest Icon Soul of the High Priest provides the Surge of Light Icon Surge of Light talent which is a small amount of healing for no Mana cost, and the ability to heal slightly more while moving. It should not be used in raids.

We would point out that for progression raiding, you should prioritise X'anshi, Shroud of Archbishop Benedictus Icon X'anshi, Shroud of Archbishop Benedictus, pairing it with Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus Icon Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus (survivability), Velen's Future Sight Icon Velen's Future Sight (burst healing), or Entrancing Trousers of An'juna Icon Entrancing Trousers of An'juna (sustained healing).

5. Loot Competition

Holy Priests use Cloth Armor with Intellect as their main stat.

Therefore, apart from other Holy Priests, they will also be competing for items with the classes listed below:

Item Type Competing Classes
Tier Tokens Demon Hunters, Paladins, Discipline/Shadow Priests, and Warlocks
Cloth Armor Mages, Discipline/Shadow Priests, and Warlocks
  • Amulets
  • Cloaks
  • Rings
Trinkets Restoration Druids, Mistweaver Monks, Holy Paladins, Discipline Priests, and Restoration Shamans
