1. Foreword

This page provides a summary for the changes to the Affliction Warlock specialization in the new Battle for Azeroth expansion. Recommendations for talents, traits, and rotational priorities have also been included. Please bear in mind that much of this theorycraft is still in a state of flux, and is very likely to change in the coming weeks as we approach the release of Battle for Azeroth. In the interim, the primary purpose of this page is to provide a blueprint for Affliction in Battle for Azeroth, so that you may evaluate whether or not the changes suit your taste and be suitably prepared when they arrive.

While Affliction's core gameplay remains largely intact, several talents and mechanics have been altered or removed entirely. Legacy players from Legion should have little trouble adapting their experience to the new era of Affliction.

2. Basic Mechanics Changes for Affliction Warlock in BfA

  • Summon Darkglare Icon Summon Darkglare is a new DPS cooldown, allowing you to deal powerful damage every 3 minutes. Darkglare extends all current DoTs on all enemies by 8 seconds, and gains 10% increased damage per active DoT effect (on all targets). Darkglare lasts 20 seconds and attacks the target you were targeting when it was summoned.
  • Mastery: Potent Afflictions Icon Mastery: Potent Afflictions now also affects Phantom Singularity Icon Phantom Singularity and Vile Taint Icon Vile Taint in addition to its present beneficiaries.

3. Baseline Abilities & Changes for Affliction Warlock in BfA

  • Shadow Bolt Icon Shadow Bolt is once again a part of the main rotation.
  • Life Tap Icon Life Tap now grants 1 Soul Shard in exchange for 15% of maximum life. This ability has 3 charges, with a cooldown per charge of 30 seconds.
  • Unstable Affliction Icon Unstable Affliction causes you to deal 10% more damage to applied targets.

4. Affliction Warlock Talents in BfA

Affliction Warlock BfA Talent Tree

4.1. Level 15

  • Nightfall Icon Nightfall grants Corruption Icon Corruption ticks a 25% chance to cause your next Shadow Bolt Icon Shadow Bolt to be instant and deal 25% increased damage.
  • Drain Soul Icon Drain Soul replaces Shadow Bolt Icon Shadow Bolt, dealing channeled damage over 5 seconds, increased by 100% if the target is below 20% life. If the target dies during the channel a Soul Shard is generated.
  • Haunt Icon Haunt deals moderate damage and increased Shadow damage dealt to the target by 10% for 15 seconds. If the target dies during this time, the cooldown of Haunt is reset.

4.2. Level 30

  • Writhe in Agony Icon Writhe in Agony is the same as in Legion, allowing your Agony Icon Agony damage to reach 15 stacks.
  • Absolute Corruption Icon Absolute Corruption is also functionally the same, increasing Corruption Icon Corruption duration to permanent and increasing its damage by 15%.
  • Siphon Life Icon Siphon Life has been moved to this talent tier, and is functionally the same as Legion, dealing damage over 15 seconds and healing for 30% of damage dealt.

4.3. Level 45

  • Demon Skin Icon Demon Skin has not changed in Battle for Azeroth. Soul Leech Icon Soul Leech recharges 1.0% of maximum health per second, and may now absorb 15% of maximum health.
  • Burning Rush Icon Burning Rush also has not been altered, and still grants 50% movement speed in exchange for 4% maximum health per second, and preventing you from being reduced below base movement speed.
  • Dark Pact Icon Dark Pact's values have been tinkered with, however, it still grants a large shield on demand. 20% of your current health is sacrificed to shield you for 250% of the amount lost.

4.4. Level 60

  • Sow the Seeds Icon Sow the Seeds has been somewhat neutered, now only granting one additional Seed of Corruption Icon Seed of Corruption.
  • Phantom Singularity Icon Phantom Singularity has not changed since Legion, dealing AoE damage centered around the target's location for 16 seconds and healing you for 25% of the amount.
  • Vile Taint Icon Vile Taint creates a pool at the target's location, dealing Shadow damage over 10 seconds to all enemies within the 10-yard radius and reducing their movement speed by 30%.

4.5. Level 75

  • Darkfury Icon Darkfury reduces the cooldown of Shadowfury Icon Shadowfury by 15 seconds.
  • Mortal Coil Icon Mortal Coil remains the same, allowing you to horrify an enemy and heal for 20% of your maximum health once every 45 seconds.
  • Demonic Circle Icon Demonic Circle is also functionally unchanged, allowing you to place a portal and teleport to it.

4.6. Level 90

  • Shadow Embrace Icon Shadow Embrace is applied by Shadow Bolt Icon Shadow Bolt, increasing your damage dealt to the target by 3% for 10 seconds. This effect stacks up to 3 times.
  • Deathbolt Icon Deathbolt is a spell that deals 30% of the total remaining damage of your DoT effects, with a 30 second cooldown.
  • Grimoire of Sacrifice Icon Grimoire of Sacrifice is the same as its live version, allowing you to sacrifice a pet and sometimes deal additional Shadow damage.

4.7. Level 100

5. Azerite Traits for Affliction Warlock

Azerite Traits are a facelifted version of Legion's Artifact progression system. All players will be given Heart of Azeroth Icon Heart of Azeroth, an amulet which serves as the equivalent of the Artifact weapon. Azerite is collected automatically as objectives throughout the expansion are fulfilled, unlocking traits as you reach key milestones.

Currently, the Azerite Trait system is not fully completed on the Beta, making it difficult to determine which traits are most dominant. The Azerite Traits provide a mix of damage, defense, and utility, and appear to have a smaller impact on core character power than in Legion.

6. Affliction Warlock Rotational Priorities in BfA

  1. Keep Agony Icon Agony applied at all times, up to 5 targets.
  2. Cast Unstable Affliction Icon Unstable Affliction to spend Soul Shards if you are capped.
  3. Keep Corruption Icon Corruption applied to all targets. Use Seed of Corruption Icon Seed of Corruption to apply if there are 2+ targets.
  4. Apply Haunt Icon Haunt whenever available.
  5. Use Summon Darkglare Icon Summon Darkglare whenever available.
  6. Use Life Tap Icon Life Tap to generate Soul Shards for burst, when necessary.
