General Information

On this page, you will find the best gear and best in slot items for your Frost Death Knight in World of Warcraft Shadowlands 9.2.5.

1.

Gearing a Frost Death Knight

Welcome to our Gearing Page for Frost Death Knight. This section will cover everything you need to know about gearing your character correctly.

2.

The Importance of "Simming Yourself" as a Frost Death Knight

At this stage in the game, there are so many variables and so many layers of optimization that you can apply to your character, that there is no way for a guide or anything else to tell you exactly what gear you should wear. This is why we always recommend simulating your own character using Raidbots The website can help you choose set bonuses, trinkets and combinations thereof in a way that is tailored completely to your specific character. Learning to use this tool is essential to maximizing your potential, as there is simply no other way to take all the variables into account.

As you find new gear upgrades, you will want to make sure that they are kept enchanted and gemmed according to your sim results. In order to do so efficiently, make sure to check out our Enchants and Stats pages below.

2.1.

Simulations

Simulations are usually character specific, but there are simulations available for the best gear setup obtainable. Below, you can find some of these more general simulations on our dedicated page, but it is important to note that the outcome of these simulations heavily depends on the builds chosen.

3.

Stats

Remember that it can be better to have more (quantitatively) secondary stats of different kinds, than simply focusing on one secondary stat, due to the secondary stat diminishing returns. This can mean that a higher item level piece of gear with worse stats can be an upgrade simply because of the amount of stats on that piece of gear. For more information on stats, please refer to our dedicated page.

4.

Early Gearing in Shadowlands

Once you reach max level and finish the Shadowlands campaign you will start to look for upgrades to your gear. Our recommendation for this is to start with World Quests and Heroic Dungeons. For Mythic dungeons, at 0 level, it is most efficient to find a group of people to clear all the dungeons in one go. Make sure to grab your Legendary from Torghast and buy any crafted or BoE gear that fits your budget from the Auction House.

5.

Trinkets

Frost has a variety of trinkets available that are powerful. Choosing the optimal combination generally comes down to what ilvl you can obtain your trinkets at, and what build you choose to run. Generally, one active trinket and one passive trinket fits our cooldowns well!

For passive trinkets, Old Warrior's Soul Icon Old Warrior's Soul will be your best option. The amount of Haste this trinket provides is huge, as long as you stay in combat enough. For Mythic+ where you will not be able to keep up full stacks of Old Warrior's Soul Icon Old Warrior's Soul, pick up Decanter of Endless Howling Icon Decanter of Endless Howling instead.

For active trinkets, you will have three main options: Scars of Fraternal Strife Icon Scars of Fraternal Strife, The First Sigil Icon The First Sigil or Enforcer's Stun Grenade Icon Enforcer's Stun Grenade. Scars of Fraternal Strife Icon Scars of Fraternal Strife is the best trinket on paper due to the sheer amount of secondary stats it provides. However, it comes with significant drawbacks. Only play this trinket if you can handle the negatives! Enforcer's Stun Grenade Icon Enforcer's Stun Grenade is your secondary option when playing Breath of Sindragosa Icon Breath of Sindragosa, and The First Sigil Icon The First Sigil is your other option in all other scenarios.

Obliteration Icon Obliteration actually favors double on-use trinkets. Running both Scars of Fraternal Strife Icon Scars of Fraternal Strife and The First Sigil Icon The First Sigil is actually the best combination! They do not interfere with eachother since Scars of Fraternal Strife Icon Scars of Fraternal Strife only triggers as a real trinket on-use at 1.5 minutes and 4 minutes!

6.

Valor Upgrades to Mythic+ Gear

Valor is a currency earned from Mythic+ that can be used to upgrade gear acquired from Mythic+. We recommend focusing on upgrading your Mechagon rings: Overclocking Bit Band Icon Overclocking Bit Band and Logic Loop of Division Icon Logic Loop of Division as your first priority. After this, look at upgrading your weapons or an Enforcer's Stun Grenade Icon Enforcer's Stun Grenade if you are playing Breath of Sindragosa Icon Breath of Sindragosa. After this point, try and upgrade any slot where you have a particularly low ilvl piece.

7.

Legendary Powers for Frost Death Knight

In Shadowlands, you have a choice as to which Legendary powers your character will use. You will eventually get all of the powers, however this will take a long time so you should focus on the powers that best fit what you want to do in the game.

Here are the 4 best Legendary Powers.

  1. Koltira's Favor Icon Koltira's Favor synergises very well with 2H Obliteration Icon Obliteration, and we recommend this as a viable option for raiding.
  2. Rage of the Frozen Champion Icon Rage of the Frozen Champion works really well with Breath of Sindragosa Icon Breath of Sindragosa. It does require high uptime on the boss but the raid is well-suited for this. We recommend running this Legendary for Breath in raids.
  3. Phearomones Icon Phearomones works well with Obliteration Icon Obliteration. It adds an extra GCD in your Obliteration window, giving a nice chunk of extra DPS. We recommend this as your go-to Obliteration Icon Obliteration legendary.
  4. Biting Cold Icon Biting Cold is your go-to option in Mythic+, offering solid single-target and great AoE!

We will also receive the Unity Icon Unity power which acts as our Covenant-specific Legendary. You can either obtain a free waist piece with this power from the campaign, or craft it on a custom slot once you have received sufficient reputation with The Enlightened in Zereth Mortis. We ideally want to put it in the Boots slot with Mastery and Crit missives.

8.

Frost Death Knight Tier Set in Season 4

Players will once again be able to acquire their own class tier set — gone are the days of static, boring armor! You can either loot the pieces directly from raid bosses, from your Great Vault in all three categories (Raid, Mythic+ and PvP) or by converting a season 4 piece using the Creation Catalyst!

Sepulcher of the First Ones, launched shortly after Patch 9.2, allows Death Knights to collect armor pieces that, together, enable two unique specialization-themed bonuses. For Frost Death Knights specifically, the effects are the following:

8.1.

Frost Death Knight Tier Set Thoughts

This is a really exciting and powerful tier set. It has loads of implications for talent choices, weapon choices and Runeforge choices!

The 2-set is somewhat boring but still powerful. Remorseless Winter Icon Remorseless Winter has ~70% uptime or so generally, averaging the crit bonus out to 5.5% crit or so. This is quite significant and will help with the Killing Machine Icon Killing Machine proc rate.

The 4-set opens up a ton of possible builds. Glacial Advance Icon Glacial Advance is a strong AoE spell that is not picked due to Gathering Storm Icon Gathering Storm being so strong. Furthermore, Glacial Advance applies Rune of Razorice Icon Rune of Razorice to all targets it hits. This opens up the possibility of picking up another Runeforge in place of Razorice.

First of all, the 4-set makes the Frost Death Knight very powerful in AoE scenarios. Furthermore, it feeds heavily into the Obliteration Icon Obliteration talent, making it a potential superior pick in both single-target and AoE. It is also powerful in single-target since an additional Runeforge is worth so much. 2H builds especially will benefit from this since they can now pick up Rune of the Fallen Crusader Icon Rune of the Fallen Crusader! Dual-wield unfortunately does not have a good third option and might even play a normal weapon enchant.

2H builds do have difficulties keeping up the Rune of Razorice Icon Rune of Razorice debuff on your target. You can expect to drop it a couple of times in any given fight. This is fine from a power-level perspective thought; it is still worthwhile to pick up another enchant!

When it comes to item slots, we want to use Chest, Gloves, Legs and Head for our tier set ideally. You want to prioritise obtaining the set before you start to think about the optimal item slots!

9.

Season 4 Fated Gear

With season 4, all three raids of Shadowlands will become relevant for gear again. On a weekly rotation, one of the raids will become fated, adding an affix to raid encounters, scaling health and damage of the bosses as well as dropping higher-ilvl gear. This means that your best items will be distributed across the three raids and pretty much all of them will be of the Fated version.

The Creation Catalyst still works in Season 4, meaning that we can convert some fated gear into tier-pieces, or pieces with new stats in specific slots. We want to leverage this to maximise the ilvl of our tier set pieces, upgrading gear that drop from the last two bosses of both raids. For the Frost Death Knight, the following pieces are relevant:

10.

Season 4 Dinars and Upgrades

Season 4 contains a new targeted loot system in the form of Puzzling Cartel Dinar Icon Puzzling Cartel Dinars. You will be able to obtain 3 of these through quests that send you to kill Fated bosses. You can then buy any weapon, trinket or special item (Anduin Wrynn Ring) from the three Shadowlands raids at a normal Fated difficulty level. This effectively acts as bad-luck protection if you do not loot the item naturally. We recommend the following priority when spending your Dinars:

  1. Devastated Worldshard Icon Devastated Worldshard Mainhand (Breath of Sindragosa Icon Breath of Sindragosa), Gavel of the First Arbiter Icon Gavel of the First Arbiter (Obliteration Icon Obliteration)
  2. Scars of Fraternal Strife Icon Scars of Fraternal Strife
  3. Old Warrior's Soul Icon Old Warrior's Soul (Breath of Sindragosa Icon Breath of Sindragosa), The First Sigil Icon The First Sigil (Obliteration Icon Obliteration)
  4. Devastated Worldshard Icon Devastated Worldshard Offhand (Breath of Sindragosa Icon Breath of Sindragosa)

In addition to the Dinars, you will also loot upgrade tokens from fated raid bosses. These tokens can be used to upgrade any fated item to the token's difficulty. You will probably use these tokens to upgrade the gear you buy with your Dinars, as well as other items you acquire! It is important to understand that any fated item, regardless of difficulty, can be upgraded to the token's difficulty at once. A Gavel of the First Arbiter Icon Gavel of the First Arbiter from LFR can go directly to Mythic! The priority of upgrades is similar to the Dinar priority, with the addition of high-stat high-ilvl pieces!

Remember that this priority might not apply to you directly. Always sim your character to figure out what your personal best upgrade is! The non-tier items in this list assume you convert them to tier-items using the Creation Catalyst.

  5. The First Sigil Icon The First Sigil (Scars alternative)
  6. Carapace of the First Eidolon Icon Carapace of the First Eidolon
  7. Shoulderplates of the First Eidolon Icon Shoulderplates of the First Eidolon
  8. Diadem of Imperious Desire Icon Diadem of Imperious Desire
  9. Spires of Broken Hope Icon Spires of Broken Hope
  10. Ceremonial Parade Legguards Icon Ceremonial Parade Legguards
  11. Valorous Visage of Krexus Icon Valorous Visage of Krexus

Best in Slot Items for Frost Death Knight in Season 4

We have included the BiS items for both Breath of Sindragosa Icon Breath of Sindragosa and Obliteration Icon Obliteration builds. They are both competitive and see play in different scenarios, even if Breath tends to be more popular and perform slightly better. Whenever there are two items listed, the first one is the BiS item and the second one is an alternative that comes from the raid.

11.1.

As previously mentioned, Scars of Fraternal Strife Icon Scars of Fraternal Strife has a significantly negative aspect and you should take care when playing this trinket. If you do not feel comfortable with it, do run either Enforcer's Stun Grenade Icon Enforcer's Stun Grenade or The First Sigil Icon The First Sigil instead!

    11.2.

Trinket 2 Scars of Fraternal Strife Icon Scars of Fraternal Strife (The Jailer)
2H Weapon Gavel of the First Arbiter Icon Gavel of the First Arbiter (The Jailer)

An item that deserves a specific mention is the Gavel of the First Arbiter Icon Gavel of the First Arbiter. This weapon is just so incredibly strong and it is something you should aim to acquire as soon as possible!

    12.

Best in Slot Items for Frost Death Knight in Season 4 from Mythic+

Even if Mythic+ itself does not provide many of our very best items, it is still an incredibly useful avenue for gearing. Looting Mythic-quality gear, upgrading items you loot, and leveraging the Creation Catalyst are all highly relevant.

As you can see in the actual BiS list, Overclocking Bit Band Icon Overclocking Bit Band and Logic Loop of Division Icon Logic Loop of Division are a great pair of rings. The effect from the set bonus provides a huge chunk of stats! The trinkets from Mythic+ are not as great, however. Still, Eye of Command Icon Eye of Command and Enforcer's Stun Grenade Icon Enforcer's Stun Grenade would be your best combination.

For all other gear, aim for pieces with Mastery, Crit, and Haste as a general guideline. Use the Creation Catalyst to retrieve the Arctic Assault Icon Frost DK 4-Piece and try to follow the recommended stat priority of Mastery > Crit > Haste > Vers for Mythic+ content!

If you have read the previous sections, you should now understand that static Best in Slot lists are sometimes misleading, and it is best to use the tools at your disposal, notably Raidbots' Top Gear and its new Droptimizer options.
