Best Gear To Spend Bullions On For Frost Death Knight
Season 4 offers a way to target specific, powerful items with the new Antique Bronze Bullion. This allows you to buy raid trinkets, weapons and rare items from a vendor. You will get enough Bullions to buy one item per week. The items start at ilvl and can then be upgraded 12 or 14 times (depending on the max ilvl of the item) using crests and flight stones.
For Obliteration, by far best item to buy with the bullions is the Scale of Awakening that sets your Fyr'alath the Dreamrender to 502 ilvl and allows it to be upgraded to 535. The combination of weapon ilvl and the effect makes this by far the most valuable upgrade out there. For Breath of Sindragosa, go for Gholak, the Final Conflagration instead. The mainhand weapon DPS value as well as the special effect on the weapon makes it great value.
After your mainhand weapon, you are looking at trinkets. Ominous Chromatic Essence should be your first choice, followed by Whispering Incarnate Icon. Consider picking up Neltharion's Call to Suffering and Cataclysmic Signet Brand if you are low on allies that run the first two trinkets.
Finally, rare items in the form of two rings and a cloak can be bought as well. We pick up Seal of Diurna's Chosen for the fire damage proc, Seal of Filial Duty for the high max ilvl and finally Voice of the Silent Star for the ilvl and proc effect. Here it is broken down into a list:
- Scale of Awakening/ Gholak, the Final Conflagration
- Ominous Chromatic Essence
- Whispering Incarnate Icon
- Seal of Diurna's Chosen
- Voice of the Silent Star
- Seal of Filial Duty

Gearing a Frost Death Knight
If you have a new piece of gear for which you need gems and enchant advice, you can find everything on our dedicated page below.
While gearing up, item level will be your primary target. Strength is our best stat, and you shouldn't focus too much on your secondaries at first. Once you start to receive gear pieces with the same ilvl but different stats, that is when you want to start optimizing your stat distribution. Generally, Frost Death Knights want to prioritize Crit and then Mastery and Haste! We recommend simming your character to determine what upgrade is best for you! For a more detailed explanation, you can read the Simulations page.
Simming your character is far and beyond the best way to determine if a piece of gear is, in fact, an upgrade. The trick is knowing how to do it in a way that produces reliable results. If you follow the Simulations guide page, you can use this to have a more practical gearing guide than simply following a BiS list.
Frost Death Knight Gear Upgrades in Dragonflight Season 4
Dragonflight Season 4 has two currencies that can upgrade items all the way to 528 (for Mythic track items). This requires two currencies: Flightstones and Crests that can be obtained from pretty much all content!
For more information on the Gear Upgrades system, check out our dedicated page for it below.
Best Items to Upgrade for Frost Death Knight in Dragonflight Season 4
We want to upgrade our most valuable slots at first, since it provides the best DPS per unit of currency. This includes the Weapon, as well as our trinkets. After this point, aim to upgrade slots with as many stats as possible, such as Helm, Shoulder, Chest, and Legs.
- Weapon (Legendary or Mainhand)
- Trinkets
- Helm, Shoulder, Chest and Legs or Bullion items
Weapon and Trinkets are just great for upgrading since they provide a lot of power for the price you pay. After this point, make sure to simulate your character to find the upgrade that gives the most DPS per unit of upgrade currency possible. Upgrading Bullion items is pretty much always safe since they tend to have special effects and are BiS.
Embellishments generally end up relatively low on the upgrade priority due to not being an efficient way of spending crests. As always, sim your character to figure out what is the best DPS per crest value for you!
Overall Top Trinkets
Frost generally favors two passive trinkets in a raiding environment due due to our flat damage profile (or variable CD windows in Obliteration's case).
The best passive options are Whispering Incarnate Icon and Ominous Chromatic Essence. Cataclysmic Signet Brand ends up being better in long fights (6-7min+). Elementium Pocket Anvil and Neltharion's Call to Suffering are solid alternatives. Both Icon and Ominous require people in your raid or party to wear the trinket for you to get the maximum benefit. Equipping alternative trinkets can sometimes be the best play because of this!
I have listed the best trinkets below
Best Trinkets
- Whispering Incarnate Icon
- Ominous Chromatic Essence
- Cataclysmic Signet Brand
- Elementium Pocket Anvil
- Neltharion's Call to Suffering
- Pip's Emerald Friendship Badge
Stats
Many people overthink the distribution of their secondary stats. An important thing to remember is that a higher quantity of stats is nearly always better than a better quality of stats. Because of this, wearing higher item-level gear with worse stats tends to be better than lower item-level gear with great stats. Keep this in mind when considering gear. For more stats information, please refer to our dedicated page.
Jewelry
For neck and ring pieces, you can afford to drop 5-10 ilevels in most cases to get our preferred stat: Crit. That said, you should always sim yourself to see what is better as the secondary stat diminishing returns can still change your ideal setup. Remember that you aim for a balance in stats; just stacking Crit above else, for instance, is a bad idea!
Weapons
For Season 4, the Legendary is our best Weapon by far! Once you obtain this Weapon, Obliteration becomes roughly equal to Breath of Sindragosa in Raid (it's always better in Mythic+). Gholak, the Final Conflagration and Strike Twice are great Dual-Wield weapons. For our 2H Weapon, anything at the highest ilvl is best until you get your Legendary.
Tier Set Bonus
With Season 4, we have a Frost Death Knight Tier set bonus that buffs how we play.
- 2-piece set bonus: Frost Death Knight 2pc
- 4-piece set bonus: Frost Death Knight 4pc
The Frost Death Knight Tier Set in Season 4 revolves around our Frostwyrm's Fury talent. The 2-piece increases our Howling Blast damage by 10%, and makes it stack up a damage buff for our next Frostwyrm's Fury. Furthermore, Pillar of Frost calls down a Frostwyrm's Fury at 25% effectiveness. The 4-set causes enemies hit by Frostwyrm's Fury to take 20% increased damage from critical strikes for 12 seconds.
The tier set primarily increases the damage in your Pillar of Frost windows. It has good synergy with Obliteration due to the high amount of crits this build gets in its Pillar window. However, it is stills strong for Breath of Sindragosa due to the high amount of Crit this build generally runs. It is really good for AoE as you pick up Absolute Zero for some huge burst potential every 90 seconds.
When it comes to gameplay impact its purely passive. You do not really play differently due to the dragon or the buff you get. Do be careful about potentially ninja-pulling packs with the dragon from your Pillar. However, we should be used to this due to Frostwhelp's Aid doing the exact same thing!
You want to swap to the new set once you obtain 4 pieces. If the ilvl difference is large enough, it can be worthwhile to run 2p2p (especially in Mythic+). Make sure to sim your gear to be sure!
Notable Crafted Gear and Embellishments
Crafting in Season 4 is similar to Season 3 where we aim to have 2 crafted items with embellishments. The max ilvl is again lower (525 vs 528) compared to Mythic gear which is why we don't have as many crafted items in our bis list. We want to run double Blue Silken Lining (really good even with sub 40% uptime) as our embellishments. After this point, crafting in slots where you currently have low ilvl items is a good idea, to "fill to gaps" in a sense. Simulate your character to figure out which option is best for you given your current gear.
Finally, crafting a weapon can be a good idea. It provides the most "bang for your buck" and will be your best DPS upgrade early on. This only applies if you are dual-wielding, or if you haven't obtained your Legendary yet!
