Assassination Rogue DPS Gear and Best in Slot — Shadowlands 9.0.5
On this page, you will find the best gear and best in slot items for your Assassination Rogue in World of Warcraft Shadowlands 9.0.5.
If you were looking for WoW Classic content, please refer to our Classic DPS Rogue gear and best in slot.
This Best in Slot list represents the best combination of gear obtainable from regular dungeons in Shadowlands and serves as a guideline for characters that have just hit Level 60. Because not everyone is a Mythic raider, PvP Gladiator, or clears Mythic+15 every week, this list is more of a guideline for the best pieces to keep an eye out when clearing Heroic and Mythic dungeons, and we recommend using Raidbots to sim the items you actually have available to you in order to find your best combination of gear, as well as which items to choose from your selection within the Great Vault.
Gearing a Assassination Rogue
This section will cover everything you need to know about equipping your character correctly.
If you have a new piece of gear that you need gems and enchants advice for, you can find everything you need on our dedicated page below.
Gearing your Assassination Rogue
There are some significant changes to the gearing process in Shadowlands:
- Warforging and Titanforging are no more;
- Corruption no longer exists;
- Valor Points allow you to upgrade items you acquired from dungeons and Mythic+;
- Crafted items can now be acquired with specific stats;
- World quest item level rewards no longer exclusively scale with your characters item level, but also your Renown level;
- Socket slots can only proc onto specific pieces of gear.
As you try to gear up before the release of Castle Nathria, there are a few avenues available to you to prepare as best as you can.
World Quests and Covenant-Specific Gear
World quest rewards scale with both your item level, as well as the Renown level you hold with your Covenant. That means that even if your average item level does not increase, you will eventually be offered better rewards for completing a World Quest as you gain more Renown with your Covenant.
Covenant gear can be acquired at certain reputation levels with your Covenant. These can be bought from your Covenant's Quartermaster.
Professions and Crafted Gear
Professions serve as a great way to gear up with your optimal secondary stats, as it is now possible to generate specific secondary stat combinations when adding special items to the crafting process. For example, a leather belt crafted with Missive of Critical Strike and Missive of Haste will always generate a leather belt with those two secondary stats present. Combined with the Crafter's Mark II, you will be able to craft high-level items with perfect stats much more frequently.
During the first two weeks, you will be able to do dungeons on Normal, Heroic and Mythic. The item level rewards for these are 158, 171 and 184 respectively. You can repeatedly clear Heroic dungeons by queuing up for them with the Dungeon Finder. You can also clear specific dungeons on both Heroic and Mythic once a week with a group of your choosing. While you cannot receive loot from a dungeon twice, you can repeatedly receive loot from Heroic dungeons, as long as you use the Dungeon Finder.
Valor Points can be acquired by completing Covenant Callings or finishing Mythic+ dungeons. They can be used to upgrade the item level of any item you received in a dungeon. The maximum item level that you can upgrade an item to is limited by your success in timing Mythic+ Keystones. As such, you will need to achieve the Shadowlands Keystone Conqueror: Season One or Shadowlands Keystone Master: Season One achievements to unlock further upgrade ranks.
You can find out more about this new upgrade system on our dedicated Valor Point page.
Honor and Conquest Gear
Honor is now a seasonal currency that can be used to buy items. This currency is also used to upgrade these PvP items to higher item level. While some of the higher item level upgrades are locked behind higher Renown levels, you will be able to upgrade these to up to item level 184 before Castle Nathria opens.
In order to receive Honor, you simply have to partake in any PvP activity, whether it is fighting in arenas or battlegrounds, or finishing PvP-related world quests or killing hostile players.
Conquest will function in the exact same way once the first PvP season of Shadowlands has started..
Legendary Powers and Items
One of the main features of Shadowlands is the return of Legendary items. These are items imbued with Legendary Powers that you can find all over the world. In order to craft these, you will first have to find a Legendary essence that you will then need to bring to the Runecarver inside Torghast, Tower of the Damned. For more information on this process, a list of Legendary powers as well as where to acquire individual Legendary Powers you should check out our dedicated guides.
The Importance of "Simming Yourself" as a Assassination Rogue
With all the different layers of gearing that are currently available to players it pretty much impossible to cover all edge cases and individual recommendations in a guide. We therefore highly recommend simming your own character by using Raidbots. This website allows for highly specific and individualized recommendations that take into account your exact talents, gear, trinket and all the other layers of gearing that the game has to offer. Learning to use this tool is essential to maximizing your potential, as it is the only reliable way to get information on which piece of gear, enchant, gem or trinket is the best for your character.
The Droptimizer feature from Raidbots lets you identify which dungeons and Raid Bosses you should spend your Bonus Rolls on. It simulates all of the potential upgrades in a raid or a dungeon, and lists the bosses/dungeons by rank order of how much DPS you can expect to gain from bonus rolling on it. We have a guide for it that you can access using the link below.
We generally recommend simming yourself. You can find out more on how to do that on our dedicated simulations page. As more testing and improvements are available, you will also be able to find generalized versions of simulations in the dedicated sections.
Adding Sockets to Gear
Which gems to use heavily depends on your current stat priority. As previously mentioned this priority can shift and change whenever you acquire new gear, so simming yourself to figure out the best use of your newly acquired socket is highly recommended. For general information on the stat priority for Assassination Rogues you can take a look at our stat priority section of this guide.
Assassination Rogue BiS Legendary Power
You should try to acquire the Zoldyck Insignia Legendary power and craft it onto the leg-slot, ideally with a Haste and Critical Strike missive.
Alternatively, you can craft Mark of the Master Assassin on a Ring as it is useful for all three specializations, albeit worse than Zoldyck for Assassination.
Doomblade is another viable choice for single-target, as it provides slightly better DPS overall. Zoldyck Insignia has the advantage of being better in almost any progression scenario, as boss fights tend to be the hardest during the last stage of the fight. While Doomblade might provide a higher DPS, Zoldyck will allow for better progression on most raid bosses. If you decide to craft this Legendary, it should go on the Gloves, with a Missive of Critical Strike and Missive of Haste.
For more information on what Legendary Powers are the best for Assassination and their situational benefits, you can head over to our dedicated Legendary section of this guide.

The list below shows the best piece of gear for each individual slot that can be acquired in dungeons before Castle Nathria opens. It does not take into account any items from other sources.
