1. Disclaimer

Currently, Azerite traits are still being tweaked, and simulation tools do not yet fully account for them properly. Therefore, this page is based on some amount of assumptions, and we will continue to refine it through play-testing and theorycrafting as time goes by.

2. Azerite Trait Introduction

Azerite Traits are special effects present on Helm, Shoulder, and Chest slots in Battle For Azeroth. Each Azerite item has either 2 or 3 tiers of Azerite Traits to choose from (items below item level 340 only have 2 tiers, while items above that have 3). In addition to this, every Azerite item also has a +5 item level bonus (Azerite Empowered Icon Azerite Empowered). Each tier, as well as this item level bonus, become unlocked as you gain certain amounts of Azerite Power.

The first tier of Azerite Traits is split between a class-specific choice and a generic choice. Generic choices can be zone-related or content-related (such as PvP traits which are only found on PvP gear but work in PvE content).

The second tier has a multitude of options varying from interesting stat procs to static stat gains. This is the tier that is missing on items lower than item level 340.

The third tier can either be a defensive or healing option.

Azerite gear has fixed traits and stats. Each piece has predetermined Azerite Traits, item level, and can not roll either tertiary stats or sockets. While tuning is always in flux, we will try to list the currently best traits for raiding first. Keep in mind many of these are very raid / dungeon / world / PvP-oriented and do not work well in other types of content.

3. Relative Strength of Azerite Traits for Vengeance Demon Hunter

Below we have listed the best traits for each row. The strength of each piece is based on its traits as a whole as well as its item level.

Because things are still very much in flux, the below rankings should be taken with a huge grain of salt. Things will change before the first raid in BfA is out!

3.1. Outer Ring Traits

  1. Rigid Carapace Icon Rigid Carapace (top 2 for survival and raiding in this tier)
  2. Infernal Armor Icon Infernal Armor (top 2 for survival and raiding in this tier)
  3. Cycle of Binding Icon Cycle of Binding (recommended to have 1 for dungeons)
  4. Essence Sever Icon Essence Sever (recommended to have 1 for dungeons)

3.2. Middle Ring Traits

  1. Crystalline Carapace Icon Crystalline Carapace (the second best survival trait; it is highly recommended to have 3 of it)
  2. Winds of War Icon Winds of War

3.3. Inner Ring Traits

  1. Gemhide Icon Gemhide (the best survival trait; it is highly recommended to have 3 of it)
  2. Soulmonger Icon Soulmonger (can be very strong if you are playing the pure defensive playstyle with Feed the Demon Icon Feed the Demon)
  3. Burning Soul Icon Burning Soul

4. Azerite Gear

Here is a list of the best items for both Mythic+ and raiding.

4.1. Raiding

4.2. Mythic+

5. Vengeance-specific Azerite Traits

  • Cycle of Binding Icon Cycle of Binding reduces the cooldown on all sigils that are on cooldown whenever a sigil explodes. This also works with sigils cast by Flame Crash Icon Flame Crash. This is potentially one of our strongest traits for dungeons. The cooldown redcution does not stack, however, so you will only need to take 1 of these traits.
  • Essence Sever Icon Essence Sever causes your Shear Icon Shear and Fracture Icon Fracture to have a chance to spawn extra souls (up to 5) for each enemy near you. This is potentially one of our strongest traits for dungeons. The RPPM does not stack, however, so you will only need to take 1 of these traits.
  • Gaping Maw Icon Gaping Maw causes Soul Cleave Icon Soul Cleave to grant you an absorb, which is increased based on your health percentage at the time of the cast. This trait is extremely weak and will not be desired at all.
  • Infernal Armor Icon Infernal Armor this traits gives you armor and deals damage to enemies when they attack you, all while Immolation Aura Icon Immolation Aura is active. This is one of the two best options of the Vengeance traits for defensive purposes and raiding. Which one is better between this and Rigid Carapace is fight-dependent and dependent on what other traits are on your gear.
  • Revel in Pain Icon Revel in Pain is underhwelming and will not see much play. It gives you an absorb-based on damage done during Fiery Brand Icon Fiery Brand after the debuff expires.
  • Rigid Carapace Icon Rigid Carapace is one of the two best options of the Vengeance traits for defensive purposes and raid. Which one is better between this and Infernal Armor is fight-dependent and dependent on what other traits are on your gear.
