On this page, we go over the Essence system in Patch 8.3 of World of Warcraft — Battle for Azeroth, and we tell you which are the best essences to use as Vengeance Demon Hunter, both for minor and major powers. Please refer to our Patch 8.3 Essence Guide for more information about the new essences introduced in Patch 8.3 and to our Essence guide for more general information about the Essence system and where Essences can be obtained from.
Azerite Essences for Vengeance Demon Hunters
Introduced in Patch 8.2, Essences are unique items that drop from various forms of content. They are activated through your Heart of Azeroth, and they buff your character in various ways, depending on the Essences that are currently active.

Recommended Major Essences for Vengeance Demon Hunters
Mandatory Major Essences
The Crucible of Flame ( Concentrated Flame) — This is the highest single-target DPS Essence. If you do not need a survival essence then you should be using this.
Situational Major Essences
The Formless Void ( Replica of Knowledge) — Gives you the ability to take someone else's Major Essence slot. The usage of this will be heavily dependent on your raid/group and what the situation calls for. It has potential to be very strong for utility or DPS.
Touch of the Everlasting ( Touch of the Everlasting) — The cheat death on this essence has potential to be very strong in the right situation. It is not something that you will use all the time. If you do not gain much from using other defensive essences, but need to survive a big hit, or if you want to ignore a raid mechanic, this can be used.
Sphere of Suppression ( Suppressing Pulse) — The combination of the slow with the auto attack speed reduction on enemies, makes this ideal for kiting. It will primarily be used in Mythic+, and more so on Necrotic weeks.
Azeroth's Undying Gift ( Azeroth's Undying Gift) — This will mainly be used if you need an extra cooldown to survive a tank buster. This works especially well if you need to make a tank cooldown rotation. As it has a short cooldown, so you can alternate it with Fiery Brand for a cooldown every ~30s.
Nullification Dynamo ( Empowered Null Barrier) — The primary benefit of this essence is the dispel. It can be used on certain effects to help negate mechanics or to give you a little extra room with magical effects. In general it will only be used for the dispel.
Conflict and Strife ( Conflict) — This enables Cleansed by Flame while you have the essence slotted. The dispel is not very strong, only removing minor poisons and diseases. So it will not help you break any mechanics. The other half of the major and the minor ( Strife) are strong though. With our constant ability to interrupt and CC enemies with our sigils, we can have a higher uptime than most on the double Versatility buff. It will primarily be used in Dungeons.
AnimaofLifeandDeath ( Anima of Death) — Provides a big burst of damage and healing on a long cooldown. In general the cooldown is too long for it to be worth the slot. If taken, then use it when there are several mobs around you for maximum dps and healing gain. It does scale with Metamorphosis, so if used while Metamorphosis is active, you gain free damage.
Lackluster Major Essences
WorldveinResonance ( Worldvein Resonance) — This essence is only taken for the minor, and even then if you are taking it, then it is because your raid is taking it and you will be around them most of the time. So this should not be used as a major slot, as you will have near 100% uptime anyway.
StrengthoftheWarden ( Vigilant Protector) — The cooldown on this is too long to be used in general. If you really need an AoE taunt and want a slight extra damage reduction, it can be used. This will mainly be for Skittish weeks or if you need to pick up mobs very quickly.
MemoryofLucidDreams ( Memory of Lucid Dreams) — Pain means extremely little to us as Vengeance.
Aegis of the Deep ( Aegis of the Deep) —The damage reduction you gain from this is extremely negligible, making it not worth the essence slot.
Recommended Minor Essences for Vengeance Demon Hunters
Mandatory Minor Essences
Strife from Conflict and Strife — Provides a very high uptime on a decent amount of Versatility. You should have max or near max stacks of this up all of the time.
Null Barrier from Nullification Dynamo — Provides a constant absorb against Magic Damage and does a sizeable amount of DPS on top of that. Splits damage on AoE.
Stand Your Ground from Aegis of the Deep — Provides a large Versatility increase when several enemies are nearby. Very good for large pulls in Mythic+.
Symbiotic Presence from The Formless Void — Provides Haste and Agility with 100% uptime in raid, which makes this essence a solid pick.
Hardened Azerite from Azeroth's Undying Gift — The proc on this is very strong. The longer cooldown makes it not used as often, but when it works it is great.
Sphere of Suppression from Sphere of Suppression — The buff is always up, but the general gain from the stats is not worth the slot
Situational Minor Essences
Endurance from Strength of the Warden — Has potential to be a large amount of overall healing. It is not something that you will genuinely notice, but overall this should heal a fair amount. Meant for Mythic+ mainly.
Strive for Perfection from Vision of Perfection — The minor is arguably stronger than the Major. It works with Gluttony with the healing proc and reduces the cooldown on Metamorphosis. This will not generally be taken as a minor itself, but used in conjunction with the Major.
Ancient Flame from The Crucible of Flame — The DPS increase does not warrant the slot, but you will very often use the major power, which means you will often have this minor power.
Lifeblood from Worldvein Resonance — This is worth a lot of Agility if your raid is stacking this. Allowing high uptime on max stacks.
Lackluster Minor Essences
Lucid Dreams from Memory of Lucid Dreams — The proc rate on this is low. While the buff is nice, it will not have a high uptime.
Anima of Life from Anima of Life and Death — The health gain on this is not high enough to make the essence slot worth it.
Reality Shift from Ripple in Space — You have to move a lot to proc this, meaning you will not have a good uptime on it.
