General Information

On this page, we go over the new Essence system in Patch 8.2 of World of Warcraft — Battle for Azeroth, and we tell you which are the best essences to use as Vengeance Demon Hunter, both for minor and major powers. Please refer to our Patch 8.2 Guide to Essences for more information about the Essence system and where Essences can be obtained from.

Azerite Essences for Vengeance Demon Hunters

Introduced in Patch 8.2, Essences are unique items that drop from various forms of content. They are activated through your Heart of Azeroth Icon Heart of Azeroth, and they buff your character in various ways, depending on the Essences that are currently active.

Our Essence Guide has a full list of all the Essences, together with their descriptions and explanations on how they work.

What follows on this page will relate directly to how Essences affect this spec, since generic information is beyond the scope of this guide.

Disclaimer: Please note that at the moment, simulations and general theorycrafting around Essences is a work in progress, and as a result, most of the recommendations made here are subject to change.

Notable Essences for Vengeance Demon Hunters

Aegis of the Deep: the Major power (Aegis of the Deep Icon Aegis of the Deep) for this is fairly underwhelming in power and cooldown time. The Minor power (Stand Your Ground Icon Stand Your Ground), however, will be one of the best on AoE, while lacking on Single Target.

Memory of Lucid Dreams: Pain generation is not an issue for us, so the gains on both effects are minimal. The Minor power (Lucid Dreams Icon Lucid Dreams) is not completely terrible though.

Vision of Perfection: the Major power (Vision of Perfection Icon Vision of Perfection) is just average. Random procs of Meta will only help us while actively tanking. The Minor power (Strive for Perfection Icon Strive for Perfection) is slightly better, as it gives 13% cooldown reduction to Metamorphosis Icon Metamorphosis and provides a 5% heal whenever you gain Metamorphosis.

The Crucible of Flame: this will most likely provide good DPS, however we must wait for further testing/tuning.

Worldvein Resonance: both the Major (Worldvein Resonance Icon Worldvein Resonance) and Minor power (Lifeblood Icon Lifeblood) are decent on this. Agility does not provide much for survival, but can help offensively. Note that this is hindered via movement.

Ripple in Space: the Major power (Ripple in Space Icon Ripple in Space) has potential in Mythic+ for the 10% damage reduction when pulling a large pack, but in general will not be used. The Minor power (Reality Shift Icon Reality Shift) is easy for us to activate via Infernal Strike Icon Infernal Strike.

Conflict and Strife: the talent gained from the Major power can help for dispelling yourself from basic curses/poisons etc. The main gain from the Major power is the bump in versatility, which we can get often via our utility. The Minor power is one of the best at the moment due to its very high uptime on a good chunk of Versatility.

Azeroth's Undying Gift: the Major power (Azeroth's Undying Gift Icon Azeroth's Undying Gift) will have general use for raiding. You will have it in most of the time. The Minor power (Hardened Azerite Icon Hardened Azerite) is also very solid defensively, and will most likely be used in all content.

Anima of Life and Death: the Major power (Anima of Death Icon Anima of Death) will be one of the best for Mythic+, as it provides a good sized heal and a good burst ability. The Minor power (Anima of Life Icon Anima of Life) is just average. It is better if you do not drop below 35% HP.

Nullification Dynamo: the Major power (Empowered Null Barrier Icon Empowered Null Barrier) is decent when it is up, but the cooldown is too long. The Minor power (Null Barrier Icon Null Barrier), however, will be used in all content most of the time.

Sphere of Suppression: the Major power (Suppressing Pulse Icon Suppressing Pulse) is underwhelming, but it may see use in Mythic+ due to its low cooldown. The Minor power (Sphere of Suppression Icon Sphere of Suppression), however, provides 100% uptime on more Haste and speed as long as you are being attacked.
