1. Best in Slot List

Bear in mind that all of this is subject to change based on Warforging and Titanforging happening on gear, so this is absolutely a guideline and not a rule. Note that it is also just dealing with gear from raid environments, so this could change if you are spending a large amount of time in Mythic+ and gaining different, rarer pieces.

1.1. Set Bonuses with Explosive/Piercing Shot or "Meme Build".

For users of the meme build, the 4-piece set bonus is generally not very desirable because your Trueshots are usually spend spamming Multi-Shot and Marked Shot, which is Focus positive (negating the effects of the 4-piece bonus entirely). If you have 2 better, non-tier items, you can and should replace the worst 2 tier items you have with those simply for the stats. If you are playing the meme build on a pure single-target fight, you should still use the 4pc.

1.2. Legendary Tier Piece Alternatives

If you have certain Legendaries, it is obviously better to equip those instead of tier pieces in a given slot, so in order to fulfill the 4-piece set bonus, you will need to look for alternatives. Below is a list of the most important tier pieces to have, and in other words, the tier pieces you would go for first in the event that a Legendary breaks your set bonus. The top 4 set pieces are in the BiS list above, below the other pieces will be listed in order of how good they are, so if you have to replace a piece from the BiS list, go for these instead.

  1. Eagletalon Spaulders Icon Eagletalon Spaulders (unless you have the Court of Stars/Arcway set bonus, in which case you should pick the chest instead);
  2. Eagletalon Tunic Icon Eagletalon Tunic.

2. Trinket & Legendary DPS Rankings

Marksmanship Trinket Sims

This trinket/legendary simulation spreadsheet is inherited from this spreadsheet, where you can also see the underlying data. Note that sometimes the spreadsheet on this link may be slightly broken as it is tinkered with by me. The screenshot above reflects the most recent, up-to-date version of the trinket sim.

Naraxas' Spiked Tongue Icon Naraxas' Spiked Tongue requires you to stay 20 yards away from the target at all times, which is not often possible. So that trinket is overpowered somewhat in SimCraft compared to a more realistic scenario where you might be standing close to the boss for some periods.

2.1. Trinkets to Look For

All stat stick trinkets are very strong for their item level, and a stat stick trinket with your best stat on it will keep you happy for a long time. Stat sticks also scale indefinitely with multiple targets, while trinkets with single-target procs do not benefit your multi-target DPS in the same way. A ton of world quests can drop stat sticks with a random stat on them, and these are always worth doing if you don't have one. Additionally, Guarm in the Trial of Valor raid drops a statstick trinket with a random stat, and Nightbane from the Return to Karazhan dungeon drops a 875+ item level Mastery statstick.

Convergence of Fates Icon Convergence of Fates is the best Marksmanship trinket period. It gives you a significant reduction on Trueshot's cooldown, allowing you many more uses in a fight. Its cooldown reduction effect does not scale with its item level, so it is best in slot over any other trinket even from Normal Nighthold. You need this trinket, it is even better than the sims would indicate on their own.

Unstable Arcanocrystal Icon Unstable Arcanocrystal is essentially the best trinket in the game for its low (860 base) item level. It drops from the world boss Withered J'im which is not always up. When the world boss is up, you should absolutely use your bonus roll coins to try and get this trinket. Since it gives pure stats and has no procs, it is just as good for multitarget as it is for a single target.

Fury of the Burning Sky Icon Fury of the Burning Sky is a useful AoE trinket in particular, while also being useful for single-target due to its high base item level. It is essentially a new version of the now-nerfed Aran's Relaxing Ruby Icon Aran's Relaxing Ruby. It drops from High Botanist Tel'arn in the Nighthold.

Bloodthirsty Instinct Icon Bloodthirsty Instinct is a proc trinket that drops from Ursoc in the Emerald Nightmare. It has a small Haste proc that has a lot of uptime (40%+ on most encounters). It also procs more frequently on lower health targets.

3. Legion Legendaries

This is a comprehensive list of the non-spec specific legendaries that are available to Hunters in Legion. Legendaries can drop from daily loot chests, the Class Order Hall Mythic+ loot chest, the PvP loot chest, 5-man dungeons of all kinds, world bosses, and raid bosses from all difficulties. The spec-specific Legendaries will be listed under their respective class guide.

The Shadow Hunter's Voodoo Mask Icon The Shadow Hunter's Voodoo Mask is a Legendary helmet which heals you for 20% of your maximum health whenever you use Feign Death Icon Feign Death, as well as an additional 5% of your health every second for 10 seconds for as long as you remain feigned. This can be an extremely useful self-heal when needed during raid encounters and Mythic+ encounters.

Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus Icon Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus is a Legendary necklace which gives you an absorb shield for 25% of your maximum health for 30 seconds, every 30 seconds. This makes it the strongest survivability legendary, especially since you will passively benefit from it. From a progression raiding standpoint where damage output is often not the primary concern, it is an incredibly strong legendary from a survivability standpoint, and it gives a lot of secondary stats which is a significant boost to DPS as well.

Roots of Shaladrassil Icon Roots of Shaladrassil are a pair of Legendary leggings that cause you to gain 3% health every second for as long as you stand still. The first heal occurs 1 second after you stop moving. This is the weakest survivability legendary, since the healing done does not add up to nearly as much damage prevented as Prydaz does, although the high item level of a high-budget item like legs makes it decent as far as non-DPS legendaries go.

Sephuz's Secret Icon Sephuz's Secret is a Legendary ring that gives you 70% increased movement speed and 15% Haste for 10 seconds whenever you apply a crowd control effect (stun, roots, silenced and so on) to non-boss enemies. It also increases movement speed by 10% and Haste by 2% passively. It can act as a damage and mobility boost on add-heavy encounters where you have to slow enemies, and it is a decent legendary for most Mythic+ dungeons.

Kil'jaeden's Burning Wish Icon Kil'jaeden's Burning Wish is a Legendary trinket that gives you a ton of stats passively, and has an on-use proc with a 1:15 minute cooldown that deals heavy, critical AoE damage around the target it hits. This is a powerful burst AoE legendary, and its heavy base stats makes it very powerful in general. Because it always crits, it has good synergy with Marksmanship's Trueshot Icon Trueshot cooldown, which increases critical strike damage by 50%, and it should be used together with Trueshot as often as possible.

3.1. Marksmanship Legendaries

Magnetized Blasting Cap Launcher Icon Magnetized Blasting Cap Launcher are a pair of Legendary bracers that increase the damage done by Bursting Shot Icon Bursting Shot by 800%, and increases its range by 30 yards. This elevates Bursting Shot Icon Bursting Shot to being used in your rotation at all times when Vulnerable Icon Vulnerable is not active, instead of only being used as a crowd control ability. It is especially powerful for Mythic+ dungeons, but its usefulness in raids is limited unless you can combine its AoE damage with its crowd control capability in a meaningful way. It makes Bursting Shot very susceptible to ninjapulling in dungeons.

War Belt of the Sentinel Army Icon War Belt of the Sentinel Army causes each enemy hit by Multi-Shot Icon Multi-Shot and Sidewinders Icon Sidewinders to increase the damage done by the next Aimed Shot Icon Aimed Shot by 10%, stacking up to 20 times. This has no DPS effect on single-target unless you are using Sidewinders Icon Sidewinders which is no longer recommended, but it is very powerful in AoE scenarios where you can stack the buff up and then fire an extremely high-damage Aimed Shot consistently. For most fights in the Nighthold, it has very high potential and is the best legendary alongside the boots below. It does not change your rotation very much, you should of course try and build as many stacks as possible before using Aimed Shot if you are using it (on multiple targets), but you should not cap Focus to achieve this goal, as you would be losing more Aimed Shots than you gain in damage.

MKII Gyroscopic Stabilizer Icon MKII Gyroscopic Stabilizer is a new pair of Legendary gloves for Marksmanship. It causes every second Aimed Shot Icon Aimed Shot to have a 15% increased crit chance, and also be castable while moving. This is an incredibly powerful single-target legendary, even when not considering the massive mobility increase. It is the best single-target legendary along with the Legendary boots.

Ullr's Feather Snowshoes Icon Ullr's Feather Snowshoes are Legendary boots that reduce the cooldown of Trueshot Icon Trueshot by 0.8 second each time you cast a damaging ability (except everything but Arcane Shot, Multi-Shot, Marked Shot and Aimed Shot). On average, these boots will reduce the cooldown of Trueshot Icon Trueshot by ~45-55 seconds. This makes them the best legendary as a general statement, though their benefit will depend on whether the cooldown reduction will grant you an extra cast of Trueshot in the fight. Since the cooldown reduction is so drastic, however, this is fairly likely to happen.

Zevrim's Hunger Icon Zevrim's Hunger is a Legendary ring that gives Marked Shot Icon Marked Shot a 15% chance to not consume Hunter's Mark Icon Hunter's Mark, allowing you to cast them back-to-back. This is a pretty weak single-target legendary, but quite a strong AoE one since Marked Shot constitutes a lot of our AoE damage. It does not change your rotation in any meaningful way, and you should simply spam the extra Marked Shots that it gives you back-to-back.

3.1.1. Marksmanship Legendary Ranking

This list seeks to rank all the Legendaries in terms of desirability. This will be done in different tiers rather than a hard 1-2-3 list. Tier 1 contains BiS legendaries for most encounters, Tier 2 are all contenders for the second BiS slot depending on the situation, while Tier 3 Legendaries are generally undesirable.

  1. Tier 1 - Best in Slot
  2. Tier 2
  3. Tier 3

4. Loot Competition

Regarding the loot you will get from raid or dungeon bosses, you will compete with other classes in the following cases:

Item Type Competing Classes
Tier Tokens Beast Mastery/Survival Hunters, Monks, Shamans, and Warriors
Mail Armor Beast Mastery/Survival Hunters and Shamans
  • Amulets
  • Cloaks
  • Rings
Trinkets Havoc Demon Hunters, Feral Druids, Windwalker Monks Beast Mastery/Survival Hunters, Rogues, and Enhancement Shamans
