Devourer Demon Hunter DPS Easy Mode — Midnight (12.0.1)
On this page, we explain how to easily play Devourer Demon Hunter in World of Warcraft — Midnight (12.0.1), using the simplest rotation, talent tree, stat priority, gear setup, etc., without sacrificing performance.
Welcome to our Quick Start Guide for Devourer! This page is aimed at players who want to jump straight in without in-depth explanations. It will cover some quick build loadouts, provide you with key rotational building blocks, and some extra tips to help ease you into Midnight's brand new Demon Hunter offering.
The Basics of Devourer Demon Hunter
The Devourer rotation is simple on the surface, but has some hidden depth
when it comes to managing its key mechanic -
Void Metamorphosis. As a
caster it is essential to always be casting, by making use of its highly mobile
toolkit. Three simple rules that cover the core pillars are:
Build Fury
Devourer has two resources, and both are important. Fury is generated by
Consume and many talents, or from gathering
Shattered Souls.
This is spent on
Void Ray while outside of
Void Metamorphosis,
but it drains rapidly while inside to sustain your transformation.
Spend Souls
Souls are generated via talents, or with
Consume casts.
These can be collected by running over them or using
Reap to
gather from range. After reaching 50, you can transform into
Void Metamorphosis,
empowering your abilities. While transformed, every 30 Souls gathered
allow you to cast one
Collapsing Star.
Maximize Void Metamorphosis
While transformed, Fury drains rapidly. Your goal in this form differs based on Hero Talent selected. For
Annihilator, your goal is to cast
as many
Collapsing Stars as possible. For
Void-Scarred,
your goal is to proc your
Voidsurge, and then attempt to cast
a second
Voidblade. To help with this,
Void Ray,
Collapsing Star and
Voidblade
(with talents) briefly pause the drain to catch back up.
Devourer is built around balancing two different playstyles. While outside
Void Metamorphosis you cycle Fury to cast
Void Ray, generating
Souls to build to your transformation. While inside Demon Form, you want to
carefully balance Fury to sustain your form, while casting as many
Collapsing Stars as possible before time runs out. You'll eventually
build an intuition on the flow, and know when you're about to drop out before
your next
Collapsing Star, allowing you to build up some reserve Souls.
Once you get used to the push-and-pull of resources, it rewards you with a
satisfying build up, leading into a big payoff, with a surprising amount of depth.
Recommended Builds for Devourer Demon Hunter
If you're looking for loadouts that focus on alternative Hero Talents or setups, you can check our Talent Page:
As it stands right now,
Void-Scarred and
Annihilator are
both very close for Single-Target. As such,
Annihilator is the
recommended build for Single-Target due to its ease, while
also being the recommended choice in AoE as well. Both are still
viable in all forms of content, and alternative talent builds can be found in
our Talent Page.

Single-Target Talents for Devourer Demon Hunter
Currently in Midnight, both Hero Talent trees are incredibly close in throughput.
As such, we've recommended
Annihilator here due to its easier execution
requirements, as it doesn't involve the use of melee abilities. Its single-target
is focused around triggering
Voidfall with
Reap as often as
possible, and casting large chains of
Collapsing Star during
Void Metamorphosis
utilizing the
Midnight Apex Talent.
It operates as a classic build-and-spend rotation, rewarding good resource management, and features a fairly streamlined caster gameplay loop.

AoE Talents for Devourer Demon Hunter
In AoE,
Annihilator more clearly pulls ahead for Devourer,
having a damage profile and gameplay loop more suited to the needs of Mythic+ and
dungeon content. It cycles through Fury as much as possible to cast
Void Ray,
while entering into
Void Metamorphosis to trigger
Voidfall through
Mass Acceleration and
Midnight. It maintains the use of
Emptiness for longer cooldown windows, but can swap to
Soul Glutton,
should a certain dungeon require it.

Devourer Demon Hunter DPS Rotation
Here, we'll be providing some building blocks that detail key rotational concepts for Single-Target that you can put into practice. If you're instead looking for a full-fledged priority list, you can jump over to our Rotation page, which provides detailed breakdowns for each build and content type.
Single Target Breakdown
In Single-Target, when playing
Annihilator, everything centers around
building toward and executing your
Void Metamorphosis windows
effectively. These are fairly frequent, and you're looking to extend them as long as possible to cast large
Collapsing Stars.
Here's a brief breakdown of the key steps when getting started:
-
Build & Spend Fury
This is generated via
Consume, or by gathering
Shattered Souls.
While outside of
Void Metamorphosis, cast
Void Ray whenever you reach 100 Fury.
While inside, generate as much as you can to sustain the transformation. -
Generate & Collect Souls
Any damage you deal has a small chance to spawn a soul around your character.
Consume generates 2, while
Void Ray spawns many via
Waste Not.
These are collected by contact, or gathered from range by casting
Reap.
-
Execute Void Metamorphosis
This can and should be cast as soon as you gather 50 Souls.
Use
Collapsing Star as much as you can.
Proc
Voidfall and use
Reap before entering
Void Metamorphosis to make use of the free reset and free proc.
Use
Void Ray to pause your Fury drain when you are about to cancel your form.
-
Consume Voidfall -
Every three stacks of
Voidfall, cast
Reap.
Consume has a 35% chance, and
Void Ray 100% chance to generate a stack.
Void Metamorphosis generates three, so
Reap before entry if you have three stacks.
When learning the flow, it's best to break it up into steps. We recommend focusing on things in this order:
AoE Breakdown
In AoE, it still follows many of the same rules learned in Single-Target, but
looks to cast even more
Collapsing Stars due to the increased Soul
Fragment generation. Key things that change in AoE are:
-
Execute Void Metamorphosis
This can and should be cast once you gather 35 Souls.
Every 30 Souls gathered while active allows you to cast
Collapsing Star.
Manage your windows between pulls, aiming to cast as many stars as possible. -
Utilize Eradicate
Eradicate replaces
Reap following
Void Ray casts.
Reap is only cast in AoE with either
Eradicate or
Voidfall active.
Void Ray is cast frequently, so it's almost always available.
The core AoE principles can be learned in Single-Target. We'd recommend focusing on things in this order:
Apex Talent Usage - Midnight
While not all builds make use of a full 4 points in the Apex Talent,
Midnight,
when it is taken it simply improves the damage of
Collapsing Star casts
when used. With the final point -
Midnight - it means your first cast
upon entering
Void Metamorphosis should be
Collapsing Star for
up front burst.
Devourer Demon Hunter Stat Priorities
The current Devourer stat priority is as follows:
- Intellect
- Haste
- Mastery
- Critical Strike
- Versatility
Primary stats are back to being extremely valuable, so picking items based on item-level is generally a safe bet to increase your Intellect.
Currently, Haste is extremely valuable, making it far smoother to navigate
longer
Void Metamorphosis. Mastery is close behind, providing a large
damage multiplier especially when transformed.
While Critical Strike has some extra scaling with
Calamitous,
it's still far outclassed by the above two options. Versatility remains weakest,
though it does provide additional defense.
Defense & Utility Spells for Devourer Demon Hunter
While the prune in Midnight has hit many specializations, Devourer still has some tricks up its sleeve to deal with different situations. It's got a decent defensive suite, and an excellent mobility toolkit.
Defensive Tools
| Ability | Description/Effect |
|---|---|
| Devourer's defensive tool, providing 25% damage reduction for 10
seconds on a 1-minute cooldown. Can be augmented with a second charge via the
|
|
| Causes you and any ally stood within the 8-yard pool created to have a 15% chance (increased to 30% in a party) to avoid any instance of damage. Lasts 8 seconds, has a long 5-minute cooldown (reduced by talents), but is a good defensive and utility cooldown combined into one. | |
| Provides a very brief 6% HP shield after casting |
|
| While not an active tool, Devourer has a good amount of built-in Leech
that becomes even stronger during |
|
| Provides 15% Magic damage reduction for 12 seconds after interrupting an enemy. |
Mobility Tools
| Ability | Description/Effect |
|---|---|
| Devourer's answer to Havoc's |
|
| Causes you to leap backward, with a 25-second cooldown. Some talents within the Devourer tree can augment this to become part of your offensive rotation, but its baseline effect is simply a movement tool. | |
| Double-jumping will propel you forward faster than standard movement speed,
meaning you always have a tool available. With the new |
|
| While not an active tool, any Mastery rating you have will also increase your movement speed. |
Utility Tools
| Ability | Description/Effect |
|---|---|
| Devourer's interrupt ability, with a 15-second cooldown and 5-second lockout. Uniquely compared to other Demon Hunter interrupts, it also has a 30-yard range. | |
| Deals light Cosmic damage and stuns nearby enemies for 2 seconds, with a 45-second cooldown. Very flexible AoE stopping tool. | |
| Incapacitates enemies in the target area for 15 seconds after a brief delay, with a 2-minute cooldown. While not as flexible as your AoE stun, still an extra useful stop. | |
| Dispels one magic effect from your target, with a 10-second cooldown. Like all Demon Hunter specializations, it has access to an offensive dispel. | |
| Incapacitates the targeted demon, beast, or humanoid for 1 minute. While this has a limit of one, it serves as hard-CC on enemies that also won't draw aggro from nearby players while it's under this effect. |
Blizzard Rotation Assist for Devourer Demon Hunter
Added in The War Within, the Rotation Assist tool curated by Blizzard has two modes: the first highlights action bar buttons with a recommended priority, while the second provides a single keybind that automatically presses the top priority ability on that same list, but with a 25% GCD penalty between casts.
Like many classes, it doesn't use major cooldowns or abilities that displace
your character, which in the case of Devourer is quite a big problem. Since the spec
relies heavily on making use of
Void Metamorphosis, which the one-button
tool doesn't use, the rotation assist is at a massive disadvantage. In addition to
that, it also won't use any racial abilities, trinkets, defensives or crowd control,
nor any ability that displace your character. This includes:
- Cooldowns -
Void Metamorphosis,
Collapsing Star,
The Hunt. - Movement/Displacement -
Voidblade,
Vengeful Retreat,
Shift.
All of these will need to be used manually if you have taken talents that augment them. This also extends to defensive and crowd control abilities as well.
| Hero Talent | Single-Target | AoE |
|---|---|---|
Annihilator Assist |
-53% | -44% |
Annihilator One-Button |
-60% | -62% |
Void-Scarred Assist |
-58% | -47% |
Void-Scarred One-Button |
-62% | -67% |
Due to these significant limitations, it's very hard to recommend this tool. While this hopefully improves in the future, until it supports the effects Devourer is built around, it should be avoided.
If you must use the rotation tool, we recommend playing the following
Annihilator build,
as it is least impacted by the drawbacks of the tool:
