General Information

On this page, we go over the Essence system in Patch 8.3 of World of Warcraft — Battle for Azeroth, and we tell you which are the best essences to use as Retribution Paladin, both for minor and major powers. Please refer to our Patch 8.3 Essence Guide for more information about the new essences introduced in Patch 8.3 and to our Essence guide for more general information about the Essence system and where Essences can be obtained from.

1.

Azerite Essences for Retribution Paladins

Introduced in Patch 8.2, Essences are unique items that drop from various forms of content. They are activated through your Heart of Azeroth Icon Heart of Azeroth, and they buff your character in various ways, depending on the Essences that are currently active.

For more information about essences, please check out the following:

What follows on this page will relate directly to how Essences affect this spec, since generic information is beyond the scope of this guide.

Essence Comparison Simulations for Retribution Paladins

As with all simulations provided in our guides, they only provide a very rough guideline, and you should not rely on them for making decisions on your own gear. Always use Raidbots.com to sim your own character.

This section will have some basic comparisons when the Essences are implemented properly in the simulation tools we use.

Essence Rotation Changes for Retribution Paladins

Use Breath of the Dying's Reaping Flames Icon Reaping Flames only when Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath or Crusade Icon Crusade are not active. At Rank 1 priorize targets which are below 20% Health. Starting at Rank 2 and higher you can additionally priorize targets which are above 80%. At Rank 3 you want to priorize targets which are about to die within the next 5 seconds over targets that are below 20% Health or above 80% Health.

Use Essence of the Focusing Iris's Focused Azerite Beam Icon Focused Azerite Beam only when Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath or Crusade Icon Crusade are not active. Delay its use if Blade of Justice Icon Blade of Justice or Judgment Icon Judgment become usable in the next 3 global cooldowns. This means on pull you want to use it just after Blade of Justice and Judgment, but before Avenging Wrath or Crusade. Also delay if adds are spawning in the next 30 seconds. Make sure to position yourself in a safe position where you also hit as many enemies as possible before starting to cast at Rank 1 and 2. Rank 3 allows you can move during the entire cast and channel time.

Use Condensed Life-Force's Guardian of Azeroth Icon Guardian of Azeroth on cooldown. If Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath or Crusade Icon Crusade is ready, use Condensed Life-Force just before. In combination with Vision of Perfection's Strive for Perfection Icon Strive for Perfection as the minor Essence, align every second Condensed Life-Force with Avenging Wrath or Crusade.

Use Blood of the Enemy's Blood of the Enemy Icon Blood of the Enemy only during Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath or Crusade Icon Crusade (at 10 stacks). Always use it just before using Execution Sentence Icon Execution Sentence.

Use The Crucible of Flame's Concentrated Flame Icon Concentrated Flame as a filler when there are no Holy Power builders ready other than the 2 charges of Crusader Strike Icon Crusader Strike, and you do not have enough Holy Power to use any spender.

Use Memory of Lucid Dreams's Memory of Lucid Dreams Icon Memory of Lucid Dreams only during Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath or Crusade Icon Crusade (at 10 stacks). Additionally, you want to use it when you have 3 or less Holy Power (use a spender first in case you have 4 or 5 Holy Power and then use it). Always use Memory of Lucid Dreams just before using Execution Sentence Icon Execution Sentence. During Memory of Lucid Dreams you want to spend your Holy Power as soon as possible, which results in a pattern where you alternate every global cooldown between building and spending Holy Power. It is fine to overcap 1 Holy Power with Blade of Justice Icon Blade of Justice, just use it when you have 2 Holy Power even if it builds 4. Make sure to stick with the default Holy Power builder priority and use Crusader Strike Icon Crusader Strike as little as possible. The minor Essence will sometimes refund half of the Holy Power spender cost, but because 1.5 is an uneven number, it will alternate between refunding 2 and 1 Holy Power instead.

Use The Unbound Force's The Unbound Force Icon The Unbound Force only directly at the beginning of the fight and then delay to it use it together with the Reckless Force Icon Reckless Force buff. The minor Essence stacks the buff Reckless Force Icon Reckless Force up to 20 stacks, one at a time when you do not land a Critical Strike with an ability. At 20 stacks you get the short 4-second buff Reckless Force Icon Reckless Force (a massive Critical Strike chance buff), during which you want to use The Unbound Force Icon The Unbound Force.

Use Worldvein Resonance's Worldvein Resonance Icon Worldvein Resonance right before Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath or Crusade Icon Crusade. You should delay using it for up to 45 seconds to align it with the next Avenging Wrath or Crusade.

Use Purification Protocol's Purifying Blast Icon Purifying Blast on cooldown. Also delay if adds are spawning in the next 30 seconds.
