Devourer Demon Hunter PvP Rotation and Playstyle — Midnight Pre-Patch (12.0)
PvP requires you to perform various actions in the course of a duel, match, or battleground: interrupting/silencing enemies, damaging them, bursting them down, defending yourself, keeping yourself alive, etc. It is a game mode that fully utilizes your kit, especially spells that are rarely used in PvE. On this page, we go through all the spells you need to use in PvP as a Devourer Demon Hunter, how you should use them, and we explain what your playstyle should be.
This page is part of our Devourer Demon Hunter PvP Guide.
Playstyle for Devourer Demon Hunters
Devourer Demon Hunter has one primary role when in an Arena match: do damage. Players should focus on maximizing their damage as much as they can. With strong mobility, you should be able to stay on a target for most of the game. Use your strong, consistent damage to force cooldowns and then punish the enemy team by using your offensive abilities.
Before Gates Open
Have a plan for who you will be mainly using your crowd control on.
Devourer Demon Hunters have powerful crowd control with
Imprison,
Sigil of Misery, and
Void Nova.
If the enemy team has a class that can stealth, use
Spectral Sight
to see them in stealth and disrupt their opener.
The Opener
The opener refers to your team's opening crowd control chain and damage done as soon as you get out of the gates. The main goal in the opener is to force your enemies to use their cooldowns. If the enemy healer uses their trinket in the opener, they are in trouble. In the opener, Devourer Demon Hunters should focus on sticking to an enemy and dealing large amounts of damage to the target.
Burst Damage
Below is your typical burst sequence. Ideally, you will burst when the enemy healer is crowd controlled by yourself or your teammate.
- Use
The Hunt to proc
Hungering Slash. - Use
Hungering Slash. - Use
Vengeful Retreat. After Hungering Slash, Vengeful Retreat is empowered. - Use
Voidblade to proc Hungering Slash again. - Use
Hungering Slash.
- Use
Vengeful Retreat. - Use
Reap to trigger
Beckon. - Use
Consume and alternate between Reap and
Consume until you reach 100 Fury. - Use
Void Ray at 100 Fury.
As of now,
Collapsing Star is NOT viable in PvP due to the bugged
interaction it has with CC. Anything that cancels the cast will consume
the souls and remove your ability to cast it again.
Sustained damage
Sustained damage is damage you do when your burst cooldowns are not
available. You will have two priorities depending on if you are in
Void Metamorphosis or not.
The first priority we will cover is when you are outside of
Void Metamorphosis and are working to building 35 or 50
souls depending on your talents.
- Our highest priority is always
Voidblade as this is how we
trigger
Hungering Slash. - After that we have
Void Ray when you have at least 100 Fury./li>
- Next in priority is Vengeful Retreat with
Voidstep from
Hungering Slash./li>
- After that is
Hungering Slash. You want to always prioritize your procs
and Void Ray over Hungering Slash. - Then you will cast
Reap to trigger
Beckon - And with the Beckon buff you will cast your instant
Consume
The second priority assumes that you have collected your souls and are now
in
Void Metamorphosis. Similar to Havoc, during Void Metamorphosis
Reap is replaced by
Cull, Hungering Slash becomes
Reaper's Toll,
Voidblade turns into
Pierce the Veil, The Hunt becomes
Predator's Wake,
and Consume becomes
Devour.
Void Metamorphosis has infinite duration as long as you can maintain your Fury. Your goals will be to generate as much Fury as possible using Cull to grab your souls to constantly replenish your Fury.
- Our highest priority is always
Cull if you have 5+ souls. - After that we have
Void Ray./li>
- Next in priority is Vengeful Retreat with
Voidstep from
Reaper's Toll./li>
- If everything else on cooldown you will use
Pierce the Veil. - After that is
Reaper's Toll. - Then you have
Predator's Wake. This is a lower priority because
it does not generate Fury. - Then you will cast
Devour IF you have a Beckon proc from Cull.
Defensive Techniques
Blur is your main defensive cooldown. This reduces the overall damage
done to you. On a 1-minute cooldown, this is very powerful and should be used
when your healer is struggling to keep you alive or is in crowd control.
Darkness is a great defensive for not only yourself but also for
your teammates. If the enemy team is using their offensive cooldowns on a
teammate that has no defensive abilities left, using
Darkness where
they are could help keep them alive.
Vengeful Retreat can be used in times when you will need to run away
from the enemy team. This lets you get distance, and you can still attack
from range.
Macros
It is advised to use Macros to use abilities on enemies or allies without having to target them. For this reason, we have a page dedicated to them.
