Devourer Demon Hunter PvP Rotation and Playstyle — Midnight (12.0.1)
PvP requires you to perform various actions in the course of a duel, match, or battleground: interrupting/silencing enemies, damaging them, bursting them down, defending yourself, keeping yourself alive, etc. It is a game mode that fully utilizes your kit, especially spells that are rarely used in PvE. On this page, we go through all the spells you need to use in PvP as a Devourer Demon Hunter, how you should use them, and we explain what your playstyle should be.
This page is part of our Devourer Demon Hunter PvP Guide.
Playstyle for Devourer Demon Hunters
Devourer Demon Hunter has one primary role when in an Arena match: do damage. Players should focus on maximizing their damage as much as they can. With strong mobility, you should be able to stay on a target for most of the game. Use your strong, consistent damage to force cooldowns and then punish the enemy team by using your offensive abilities.
Before Gates Open
Have a plan for who you will be mainly using your crowd control on.
Devourer Demon Hunters have powerful crowd control with
Imprison,
Sigil of Misery, and
Void Nova.
If the enemy team has a class that can stealth, use
Spectral Sight
to see them in stealth and disrupt their opener.
Playing Havoc Demon Hunter in PvP
The Opener
The opener refers to your team's opening crowd control chain and damage done as soon as you get out of the gates. The main goal in the opener is to force your enemies to use their cooldowns. If the enemy healer uses their trinket in the opener, they are in trouble. In the opener, Devourer Demon Hunters should focus on sticking to an enemy and dealing large amounts of damage to the target.
Your opening burst will be fairly weak as you don't have access to
Void Metamorphosis
immediately out the games
- Use
The Hunt to proc
Hungering Slash. - Use
Hungering Slash. - Use
Vengeful Retreat. After Hungering Slash, Vengeful Retreat is empowered. - Use
Voidblade to proc Hungering Slash again. - Use
Hungering Slash.
- Use
Vengeful Retreat. - Use
Reap to trigger
Beckon. - Use
Consume and alternate between Reap and
Consume until you reach 100 Fury. - Use
Void Ray at 100 Fury.
Sustained Damage
This list serves as your sustained damage rotation priority.
Sustained damage is damage you do when your burst cooldowns are not available. You will have two priorities depending on your hero talents.
The priority will cover when you are outside of
Void Metamorphosis as
Void-Scarred and are working to building 35 or 50
souls depending on your talents.
- Our highest priority is always
Voidblade as this is how we
trigger
Hungering Slash. - After that we have
Void Ray when you have at least 100 Fury. - Next in priority is Vengeful Retreat with
Voidstep from
Hungering Slash. - After that is
Hungering Slash. You want to always prioritize your procs
and Void Ray over Hungering Slash. - Then you will cast
Reap to trigger
Beckon - Use
Soul Immolation to generate souls. - With the Beckon buff you will cast your instant
Consume
This second priority will cover when you are outside of
Void Metamorphosis as Annihilator and are working to building 35 or 50
souls depending on your talents.
- Our highest priority is always
Void Ray to stack
Voidfall. Note
that this can stack Voidfall over the 3 stack cap. - Next is
Reap when it will proc
Voidfall. - Use
Soul Immolation to generate souls. - After that is
Consume with a
Beckon proc. - Use
Voidblade. - Finally, you have
Consume with no
Beckon proc.
Burst as Void-Scarred
Below is your typical burst sequence. Ideally, you will burst when the enemy healer
is crowd controlled by yourself or your teammate. This assumes you are now in
Void Metamorphosis.
Void Metamorphosis has infinite duration as long as you can maintain your Fury. Your goals will be to generate as much Fury as possible using Cull to grab your souls to constantly replenish your Fury.
- With Void-Scarred you want to always use
Predator's Wake first. - Then use
Reaper's Toll to proc
Voidsurge. - After that use
Pierce the Veil. - Into another
Reaper's Toll. - You want to avoid using
Void Ray as this slows down your Fury drain
and your goal should be to exit Meta as fast as possible to get to the next
Voidsurge burst.
Bursting as Annihilator
Below is your typical burst sequence as Annihilator. Ideally, you will burst when the enemy healer
is crowd controlled by yourself or your teammate. This assumes you are now in
Void Metamorphosis.
- Our highest priority is always
Collapsing Star since we want to fit in
as many as we can during our Meta windows. - Then you have
Cull if you have 5+ souls on the ground. - After that we have
Void Ray. This will help you stack
Voidfall - Use
Soul Immolation to generate souls. - Then you will cast
Devour. Ideally with a Beckon proc from Cull.
Using Devourer Demon Hunter Skills and Abilities
In order to better explain the specific usage and benefits of the Devourer Demon Hunter kit, we have compiled a more detailed explanation on individual parts of your defensive and cooldown kit, so you can reach your full potential when playing Devourer Demon Hunter in PvP.
Defensives For Devourer Demon Hunter
Blur
Blur is your main defensive cooldown. This reduces the overall damage
done to you. On a 1-minute cooldown, this is very powerful and should be used
when your healer is struggling to keep you alive or is in crowd control.
Given that you have two charges of
Blur, you can use it when the enemy
uses cooldowns. This will line up with almost every go in the game, which should
simplify the usage.
Darkness
Darkness is a great defensive for not only yourself but also for
your teammates. If the enemy team is using their offensive cooldowns on a
teammate that has no defensive abilities left, using
Darkness where
they are could help keep them alive.
Darkness is a team defensive, meaning you get the most value when it
can protect both you and a teammate. Darkness should only be used for yourself
when you don't have any Blur charges left or you know Blur will not be enough.
Vengeful Retreat
Vengeful Retreat can be used in times when you will need to run away
from the enemy team. This lets you get distance, and you can still do damage
given your 25-50 yard range on most abilities.
With the
Glimpse talent,
Vengeful Retreat becomes one of your
strongest defensive abilities, making you immune to crowd control and granting damage
reduction while you are in the air. With practice, you can extend this duration for several
seconds by using
Glide.
Utility For Devourer Demon Hunter
Imprison
One of the most common and highest value uses of
Imprison
is peeling during the enemy's offensive cooldowns.
When you see an enemy commit their cooldowns, you can immediately
use
Imprison on them.
This can buy your team critical time to recover, especially if you do not have defensives available.
You can also use it aggressively to secure a win by using Imprison on the healer when you have damage.
Sigil of Misery
Sigil of Misery is one of your most flexible tools.
It can be used defensively to peel for your team during enemy
cooldowns or offensively to set up a kill window on a target.
Knowing when to use it effectively is key to maximizing its value.
Because it is a disorient, you need to track diminishing returns carefully. When playing with classes that rely heavily on disorients to win, like Balance Druids, you may not want to fear the healer. Overlapping DRs in these situations can waste your CC and reduce your overall chance of winning.
Be intentional with
Sigil of Misery. Proper planning and timing matter far more
than simply casting it whenever it is available.
Void Nova
The most basic way to use
Void Nova is to press it when you
actually have damage available. Most of the time, that means pairing it
with your Meta window so you can stun the healer and push your cooldowns.
If your teammate already has the healer crossed, though, then you can use
Void Nova on the DPS instead.
You do need to be careful when you use Void Nova on DPS. If the healer is not crossed, the debuff can just be dispelled. If the healer is in line of sight and not in crowd control, you should fully expect your stun to get removed.
Just like
Imprison, Void Nova can also be used defensively.
This is a bit more advanced because giving up your stun makes it harder
to set up kills, but it can absolutely save the game. Any time you see
the enemy team about to secure a win condition, Void Nova can be used to
completely deny it.
Macros
It is advised to use Macros to use abilities on enemies or allies without having to target them. For this reason, we have a page dedicated to them.
