1. Disclaimer

This is a draft of the final page showing the Azerite traits in order of approximate value from best to worst. Healing-specific traits in particular are difficult to simulate and will rely on testing and log analysis when raid content is released, to help get a definitive value for some of the more complicated and situational traits. Therefore, this page is based on some amount of assumptions, and we will continue to refine it through play-testing and theorycrafting as time goes by.

2. Azerite Traits for Holy Priest

Azerite Traits are special effects present on Helm, Shoulder, and Chest slots in Battle For Azeroth. Each Azerite item has either 2 or 3 tiers of Azerite Traits to choose from (items below item level 340 only have 2 tiers, while items above that have 3). In addition to this, every Azerite item also has a +5 item level bonus (Azerite Empowered Icon Azerite Empowered). Each tier, as well as this item level bonus, become unlocked as you gain certain amounts of Azerite Power.

The first tier of Azerite Traits is split between a class-specific choice and a generic choice. Generic choices can be zone-related or content-related (such as PvP traits which are only found on PvP gear but work in PvE content).

The second tier has a multitude of options varying from interesting stat procs to static stat gains. This is the tier that is missing on items lower than item level 340.

The third tier can either be a defensive or healing option.

Azerite gear has fixed traits and stats. Each piece has predetermined Azerite Traits, item level, and can not roll either tertiary stats or sockets. While tuning is always in flux, we will try to list the currently best traits for raiding first. Keep in mind many of these are very raid / dungeon / world / PvP-oriented and do not work well in other types of content.

Holy Priest does not have any traits powerful enough that they have an impact your gameplay. Sacred Flame Icon Sacred Flame does allows you to cast Holy Fire Icon Holy Fire without it costing you mana, however you should not prioritise casting Holy Fire over your regular healing spells. Therefore you should not adapt your playstyle to the traits on your gear and instead stick to playing appropriately for the encounter and your chosen talents and let any traits you have chosen just passively improve your healing.

Here are the Holy Priest-specific Azerite traits found on the Outer Ring.

Below are the Holy Priest-specific Azerite traits found on the Inner Ring.

3. Relative Strength of Azerite Traits for Holy Priest

Below we will rank the traits for a raid setting by a tier system. For rankings in Mythic+ please see our Mythic+ page. Be aware that healing-specific traits in particular are difficult to simulate and will rely on testing and log analysis when raid content is released, to help get a definitive value for some of the more complicated and situational traits. Therefore, this page is based on some amount of assumptions, and we will continue to refine it through play-testing and theorycrafting as time goes by.

The ranking system is as follows.

  1. S Tier: the strongest and most generally useful traits; these are always good choices.
  2. A Tier: these traits are either slightly weaker than the S Tier traits, or only as strong in specific situations, but are still solid choices.
  3. B Tier: a below-average trait that should be picked only in the absence of an S or A Tier trait.
  4. C Tier: a weak trait that provides very little healing output or other utility and should be avoided if possible.

Any trait not listed in one of the above tiers provides no increase in healing output, or significant utility, though some may increase damage dealt.

3.1. Outer Ring Traits

3.1.1. S Tier

  • Archive of the Titans Icon Archive of the Titans also grants you the Reorigination Array Icon Reorigination Array passive while inside Uldir, which accumulates in power as weeks go by. It is strongly recommended you have at least one of either Archive of the Titans or Laser Matrix Icon Laser Matrix as either one will provide you with Reorigination Array.
  • Blightborne Infusion Icon Blightborne Infusion is a nice amount of Critical Strike with good uptime.
  • Champion of Azeroth Icon Champion of Azeroth is a solid buff to your secondary stats, however it is only located on one item which requires Exalted with Champions of Azeroth so may be difficult to obtain before you get a higher item level chest piece.
  • Swirling Sands Icon Swirling Sands is another Critical Strike proc which is particularly easy to extend to the full duration during AoE healing.
  • Word of Mending Icon Word of Mending causes your Prayer of Mending Icon Prayer of Mending to heal for an additional amount and also reduce the cooldown of Holy Word: Sanctify Icon Holy Word: Sanctify by 2 seconds. This is a solid trait but loses value significantly if you have multiple items with this trait on it as the cooldown reduction portion does not stack.

3.1.2. A Tier

  • Anduin's Dedication Icon Anduin's Dedication / Sylvanas' Resolve Icon Sylvanas' Resolve (PVP) have potential during progress with ally deaths frequently occurring.
  • Incite the Pack Icon Incite the Pack causes you to occasionally increase your Mastery and that of up to two nearby allies for 20 seconds.
  • Laser Matrix Icon Laser Matrix also grants you the Reorigination Array Icon Reorigination Array passive while inside Uldir, which accumulates in power as weeks go by. It is strongly recommended you have at least one of either Archive of the Titans Icon Archive of the Titans or Laser Matrix as either one will provide you with Reorigination Array.
  • Prayerful Litany Icon Prayerful Litany causes Prayer of Healing Icon Prayer of Healing to restore an additional amount to the most injured ally it heals.
  • Tradewinds Icon Tradewinds causes your spells to have a chance to grant you Mastery for 15 seconds. When this buff expires, it jumps once to a nearby ally at half duration and amount.

3.1.3. B Tier

  • Blood Rite Icon Blood Rite causes your spells to have a chance to increase your Haste for 15 seconds. Killing enemies refreshes this effect.
  • Meticulous Scheming Icon Meticulous Scheming causes you to gain a buff for 8 seconds that transforms into a 20-second Haste buff after you cast 3 different spells while it is active.
  • Secrets of the Deep Icon Secrets of the Deep causes your spells to have a chance to spawn a Surging Droplet nearby, which you can collect to increase your primary stat for 18 seconds. Rarely, a Void Droplet will be created instead, which increases your primary stat for twice as much as Surging Droplet's when collected.
  • Unstable Catalyst Icon Unstable Catalyst causes your spells and abilities to have a chance to create a zone standing in which increases your primary stat.

3.1.4. C Tier

  • Blessed Sanctuary Icon Blessed Sanctuary doesn't heal enough to warrant taking it over other traits.
  • Everlasting Light Icon Everlasting Light on encounters you use Heal Icon Heal heavily can provide average benefit, but this trait is not strong enough to play around and cast Heal more than ordinary.
  • Permeating Glow Icon Permeating Glow may have some niche usage where you cast a lot of Flash Heal Icon Flash Heal, but this trait is not strong enough to play around and is a more dungeon-healing focused trait.
  • Sacred Flame Icon Sacred Flame effectively allows you to cast Holy Fire without costing you mana, even providing a small amount of additional Mana return. This amount is insignificant and not worth playing around.

Note that when using at least 1 Uldir trait inside Uldir, Reorigination Array Icon Reorigination Array grants you a buff that increases your highest secondary stat every 5 seconds, stacking up to 10. This power increases over time, in order to make Uldir raiding easier as the tier goes on.

One particular standout trait for dungeon healing is Permeating Glow Icon Permeating Glow, which provides a buff to our most commonly cast dungeon spell.

3.1.5. Engineering Traits

Due to not being able to upgrade your engineering items, you will likely replace them through either Mythic+ or from Uldir bosses. However either of the following healing-focused traits are your best choices if you are using an engineering item.

  • Relational Normalization Gizmo Icon Relational Normalization Gizmo causes your spells to have a chance to grant you a primary stat and maximum health buff or Haste and 50% movement speed for 10 seconds. This trait is only obtainable through crafting Engineering goggles (AZ3-R1-T3 Gearspun Goggles Icon AZ3-R1-T3 Gearspun Goggles) that cannot be upgraded past item level 340.
  • Ricocheting Inflatable Pyrosaw Icon Ricocheting Inflatable Pyrosaw causes your spells to have a chance to heal up to 4 allies for a large amount. This trait is only obtainable through crafting Engineering goggles (AZ3-R1-T3 Gearspun Goggles Icon AZ3-R1-T3 Gearspun Goggles) that cannot be upgraded past item level 340.

3.1.6. PvP Traits

The Anduin's Dedication Icon Anduin's Dedication / Sylvanas' Resolve Icon Sylvanas' Resolve trait was mentioned above as an A-Tier trait. This is because of the death portion generating additional procs. The PVP items also have 2 other decent traits listed below, which may have potential and still require testing. The remaining unmentioned PVP traits do not provide a notable benefit to your healing.

  • Glory in Battle Icon Glory in Battle / Liberator's Might Icon Liberator's Might causes your spells to have a chance to grant Critical Strike and Haste for 10 seconds. Note that this is a PvP trait, and attacking a member of the opposing faction significantly increases this chance, making these traits are much stronger in PvP content.
  • Last Gift Icon Last Gift / Retaliatory Fury Icon Retaliatory Fury causes your spells and abilities to have a chance to grant Mastery and an absorb shield . Note that this is a PvP trait; also, taking damage from a member of the opposite faction has a chance to activate this effect, making these traits much strong in PvP content.

3.2. Middle Ring Traits for Holy Priest

3.2.1. S Tier

  • Blood Siphon Icon Blood Siphon passively increases your Mastery and Leech.
  • Blessed Portents Icon Blessed Portents grants your healing spells a chance to apply Blessed Portents to the target for 20 seconds. When the target falls below 35% health, Blessed Portents is consumed and heals them.

3.2.2. A Tier

  • Earthlink Icon Earthlink increases your primary stat, with the exact amount cycling between a minimum value and maximum value every 6 seconds.
  • On My Way Icon On My Way passively increases your Versatility and Speed.
  • Synergistic Growth Icon Synergistic Growth grants you Mastery for 10 seconds after casting Prayer of Healing Icon Prayer of Healing. This cannot occur more than once every 30 seconds.
  • Woundbinder Icon Woundbinder causes your healing effects to have a chance to increase your Haste for 12 seconds. Healing lower health targets will grant more Haste.

3.2.3. B Tier

  • Bracing Chill Icon Bracing Chill causes your heals to have a chance to apply Bracing Chill to the target. Healing a target with Bracing Chill will heal for an additional amount and move Bracing Chill to a nearby ally, up to 6 times.
  • Ephemeral Recovery Icon Ephemeral Recovery causes your healing spells to grant you up to two stacks of an insignificant amount of Mana regeneration.

3.2.4. C Tier

  • Concentrated Mending Icon Concentrated Mending causes your healing effects to have a chance to grant the target a HoT that heals every 2 seconds for 12 seconds. The amount healed doubles every 2 seconds.
  • Overwhelming Power Icon Overwhelming Power causes your damaging spells to have a chance to increase your Haste. The amount of Haste granted decreases every second or whenever you take damage.
  • Savior Icon Savior makes your heals on targets below 35% health have a chance to heal for an additional amount.

As with the Outer Ring traits, many of the Middle Ring traits also only trigger from damage abilities which limits the number of traits that benefit our raid healing. These damage dealing traits have been left off this list.

3.3. Inner Ring Traits for Holy Priest

3.3.1. S Tier

  • Impassive Visage Icon Impassive Visage heals you when you take damage. It can not occur more often than every 6 seconds.

3.3.2. A Tier

3.3.3. B Tier

  • Twist Magic Icon Twist Magic can situationally provide reasonable healing depending Dispel Magic Icon Dispel Magic on how often you are successfully dispelling during the encounter.
  • Longstrider Icon Longstrider increases your movement speed by a percentage of your highest secondary stat, with a maximum movement speed gain limit.
  • Self Reliance Icon Self Reliance causes you to be healed every 3 seconds while no enemies are within 20 yards of you.

3.3.4. C Tier

  • Bulwark of the Masses Icon Bulwark of the Masses causes you to gain a moderate absorb shield when surrounded by 4 or more enemies, but can only occur once every 15 seconds.
  • Azerite Fortification Icon Azerite Fortification heals you when you are stunned, immobilized, or knocked back.
  • Vampiric Speed Icon Vampiric Speed causes you to self-heal and gain Speed for 6 seconds whenever an enemy you damaged dies.

3.3.5. Engineering Traits

Due to not being able to upgrade your engineering items, you will likely replace them through either Mythic+ or from Uldir bosses. However either of the following healing-focused traits are your best choices if you are using an engineering item.

  • Auto-Self-Cauterizer Icon Auto-Self-Cauterizer grants you a chance, when taking damage, to self-heal for a large amount and remove most bleed effects as well as slowing nearby enemies by 30% for 5 seconds. This trait is only obtainable through crafting Engineering goggles (AZ3-R1-T3 Gearspun Goggles Icon AZ3-R1-T3 Gearspun Goggles) that cannot be upgraded past item level 340 .
  • Personal Absorb-o-Tron Icon Personal Absorb-o-Tron grants you a chance, when taking damage, to gain a large absorb shield for up to 1 minute. This trait is only obtainable through crafting Engineering goggles (AZ3-R1-T3 Gearspun Goggles Icon AZ3-R1-T3 Gearspun Goggles) that cannot be upgraded past item level 340.

4. Azerite Traits Details and Rotation Changes for Holy Priest

At this stage no Azerite traits have an impact on your gameplay style.

It is very important that you do not actively change your gameplay in raids to suit Azerite traits as this can result in a significant decrease in your healing under nearly all circumstances.

4.1. Stacking Azerite Traits

Some parts of Azerite traits stack if you manage to get the same trait on different Azerite items. As a general rule to know if a particular part of that trait stacks or not: Values of traits that scale with item level stack, those that do not, do not stack.

Below lists the Trait components that typically stack.

  • Stat increases - For example "increases your intellect by 123".
  • Healing effects or increases - For example "heals for 123".
  • Absorb effects - For example "absorbs 123 damage".
  • Damage effects - For example "deals 123 damage".

Below lists the Trait components that typically do not stack.

  • Cooldown reduction - For example "reduces the cooldown of your ability by 2 seconds".
  • Duration of buffs and effects - For example "gain an effect for 2 seconds"
  • Number of stacks - For example "stacks up to 2 times"
  • Number of targets - For example "affects up to 2 nearby allies"

An example of this is the Word of Mending Icon Word of Mending trait. The healing component scales up with item level so multiple traits would stack increasing the healing done by Prayer of Mending Icon Prayer of Mending, however the 2 second reduction to Holy Word: Sanctify Icon Holy Word: Sanctify does not scale up with item level, so this portion does not stack.
