General Information

Here you will find a list of the best Azerite traits to use for your Holy Priest in World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, Patch 8.2. If you are yet to obtain your Heart of Azeroth Icon Heart of Azeroth, you can find out how to do so, as well as more information about it, in our Heart of Azeroth guide.

For more information about how the new Essence system introduced in Patch 8.2 affects you, please refer to our Holy Priest essence page.

1. Choosing Azerite Gear as a Holy Priest

Your choice of Azerite Gear pieces will almost always come down to the item level first, and the traits that it has second. Note that the traits you will look at when choosing gear are the Outer Ring traits, as these are the ones with the biggest impact on your gameplay.

The general rule is that if an item is a 15+ item level upgrade over another item, you should use it. If the difference between the two items is less than 15 item levels, then you should choose the one with the better Outer Ring trait. As we said, though, this is a general rule and there are exceptions; for example, if you are comparing an extremely bad trait (Blood Rite Icon Blood Rite) to an extremely good one (Swirling Sands Icon Swirling Sands). It is nearly impossible to take every single variable into account without using a tool like the Azerite Comparison calculator on the Holy Priest Spreadsheet to model the difference for yourself.

It is worth noting that if the difference between the traits is very small, then the higher item level pick will be more desirable. Azerite pieces have a high amount of Stamina, increasing your maximum health. A tiny difference in that regard can be the difference between dying and surviving, so item level is almost always king.

2. Choosing Azerite Traits as a Holy Priest

Holy Priest does not have any traits powerful enough that they have an impact on your gameplay. Therefore you should not adapt your playstyle to the traits on your gear and instead stick to playing appropriately for the encounter and your chosen talents and let any traits you have chosen just passively improve your healing.

Below we will rank the traits for a raid setting by a tier system. For rankings in Mythic+ please see our Mythic+ page. Be aware that healing-specific traits in particular are difficult to simulate and rely on testing and log analysis when raid content is released, to help get a definitive value for some of the more complicated and situational traits. This page is populated with assistance from the Holy Priest Spreadsheet which is constantly being refined through play-testing and theorycrafting as time goes by.

The ranking system is as follows.

  1. S Tier: the strongest and most generally useful traits; these are always good choices.
  2. A Tier: these traits are either slightly weaker than the S Tier traits, or only as strong in specific situations, but are still solid choices.
  3. B Tier: a below-average trait that should be picked only in the absence of an S or A Tier trait.
  4. C Tier: a weak trait that provides very little healing output or other utility and should be avoided if possible.

Any trait not listed in one of the above tiers provides no increase in healing output, or significant utility, though some may increase damage dealt.

2.1. Outer Ring Traits

2.1.1. S Tier

  • Ancients' Bulwark Icon Ancients' Bulwark grants you Versatility while you are not moving, and heals you over time while you are moving. This trait is exclusive to Alliance players and has no Horde equivalent.
  • Blightborne Infusion Icon Blightborne Infusion is a nice amount of Critical Strike with good uptime.
  • Bonded Souls Icon Bonded Souls causes your spells and abilities to have a chance to trigger a Soulbond for 15 seconds. During Soulbond, every 5 seconds you and your nearest ally are both healed for a large amount and gain a moderate amount of Haste for 5 seconds.
  • Endless Hunger Icon Endless Hunger provides additional Versatility, with the occasional additional heal from moving near dead enemies.
  • Loyal to the End Icon Loyal to the End increases your Mastery, plus additional Mastery for every nearby ally who also has the trait selected. When you die, your allies gain Critical Strike, Haste, and Versatility equal to their own Mastery bonus.
  • Relational Normalization Gizmo Icon Relational Normalization Gizmo causes your spells to have a chance to grant you a primary stat and maximum health buff or Haste and 50% movement speed for 10 seconds. This trait is only obtainable through crafting Engineering goggles.
  • Swirling Sands Icon Swirling Sands is another Critical Strike proc which is particularly easy to extend to the full duration during AoE healing.
  • Treacherous Covenant Icon Treacherous Covenant provides a decent healing boost for most of the encounter. The increased damage taken on low hitpoints is a minor drawback.

Note: The Eternal Palace trait Loyal to the End Icon Loyal to the End is only ranked as an S Tier trait if you have at least 3 or 4 others in your raid running it. This is very likely as it's a good trait for a lot of classes.

2.1.2. A Tier

  • Anduin's Dedication Icon Anduin's Dedication / Sylvanas' Resolve Icon Sylvanas' Resolve have potential during progress with ally deaths frequently occurring.
  • Arcane Heart Icon Arcane Heart causes every 1,500,000 combined damage and healing you deal to increase your highest secondary stat, and heal for 5% of all Arcane damage you take for 15 seconds.
  • Clockwork Heart Icon Clockwork Heart grants you all secondary stats for 12 seconds, once per minute.
  • Glory in Battle Icon Glory in Battle / Liberator's Might Icon Liberator's Might causes your spells to have a chance to grant Critical Strike and Haste for 10 seconds. Note that this is a PvP trait, and attacking a member of the opposing faction significantly increases this chance, making these traits are much stronger in PvP content.
  • Incite the Pack Icon Incite the Pack causes you to occasionally increase your Mastery and that of up to two nearby allies for 20 seconds.
  • Retaliatory Fury Icon Retaliatory Fury has a chance to provide you with a Mastery buff and a 10-second absorb on your target.
  • Secrets of the Deep Icon Secrets of the Deep causes your spells to have a chance to spawn a Surging Droplet nearby, which you can collect to increase your primary stat for 18 seconds. Rarely, a Void Droplet will be created instead, which increases your primary stat for twice as much as Surging Droplet's when collected.
  • Tradewinds Icon Tradewinds causes your spells to have a chance to grant you Mastery for 15 seconds. When this buff expires, it jumps once to a nearby ally at half duration and amount.
  • Unstable Catalyst Icon Unstable Catalyst causes your spells and abilities to have a chance to create a zone standing in which increases your primary stat.
  • Prayerful Litany Icon Prayerful Litany causes Prayer of Healing Icon Prayer of Healing to restore an additional amount to the most injured ally it heals.

2.1.3. B Tier

  • Blessed Sanctuary Icon Blessed Sanctuary does not heal enough to warrant taking it over other traits in higher tiers.
  • Blood Rite Icon Blood Rite causes your spells to have a chance to increase your Haste for 15 seconds. Killing enemies refreshes this effect.
  • Meticulous Scheming Icon Meticulous Scheming causes you to gain a buff for 8 seconds that transforms into a 20-second Haste buff after you cast 3 different spells while it is active.
  • Ricocheting Inflatable Pyrosaw Icon Ricocheting Inflatable Pyrosaw causes your spells to have a chance to heal up to 4 allies for a large amount. This trait is only obtainable through crafting Engineering goggles.
  • Word of Mending Icon Word of Mending causes your Prayer of Mending Icon Prayer of Mending to heal for an additional amount and also reduce the cooldown of Holy Word: Sanctify Icon Holy Word: Sanctify by 2 seconds. This is a solid trait but loses value significantly if you have multiple items with this trait on it as the cooldown reduction portion does not stack.

2.1.4. C Tier

  • Everlasting Light Icon Everlasting Light on encounters you use Heal Icon Heal heavily can provide average benefit, but this trait is not strong enough to play around and cast Heal more than ordinary.
  • Last Gift Icon Last Gift / Retaliatory Fury Icon Retaliatory Fury causes your spells and abilities to have a chance to grant Mastery and an absorb shield . Note that this is a PvP trait; also, taking damage from a member of the opposite faction has a chance to activate this effect, making these traits much strong in PvP content.
  • Permeating Glow Icon Permeating Glow may have some niche usage where you cast a lot of Flash Heal Icon Flash Heal, but this trait is not strong enough to play around and is a more dungeon-healing focused trait.
  • Promise of Deliverance Icon Promise of Deliverance causes Heal Icon Heal and Flash Heal Icon Flash Heal to heal an additional amount and reduce the cooldown of Holy Word: Serenity Icon Holy Word: Serenity by 1 second.
  • Seductive Power Icon Seductive Power causes your spells and abilities to have a chance to conjure Bwonsamdi. If you approach him, you gain a small increase to all stats for 5 minutes, stacking up to 5 times. If you fail to heed his call, you lose one stack.
  • Undulating Tides Icon Undulating Tides grants your spells and abilites a chance to deal Frost damage. Additionally, when you fall below 50% health, you gain an absorb for 8 seconds.

Two standout traits for dungeon healing are Permeating Glow Icon Permeating Glow and Promise of Deliverance Icon Promise of Deliverance, which provides a buff to our most commonly cast dungeon spells.

2.2. Middle Ring Traits for Holy Priest

2.2.1. S Tier

  • Blessed Portents Icon Blessed Portents grants your healing spells a chance to apply Blessed Portents to the target for 20 seconds. When the target falls below 50% health, Blessed Portents is consumed and heals them.
  • Concentrated Mending Icon Concentrated Mending causes your healing effects to have a chance to grant the target a HoT that heals every 2 seconds for 12 seconds. The amount healed doubles every 2 seconds.

  • Blood Siphon Icon Blood Siphon passively increases your Mastery and Leech.
  • Earthlink Icon Earthlink increases your primary stat, with the exact amount cycling between a minimum value and maximum value every 6 seconds.
  • Synergistic Growth Icon Synergistic Growth grants you Mastery for 10 seconds after casting Prayer of Healing Icon Prayer of Healing. This cannot occur more than once every 30 seconds.

2.2.3. B Tier

  • Bracing Chill Icon Bracing Chill causes your heals to have a chance to apply Bracing Chill to the target. Healing a target with Bracing Chill will heal for an additional amount and move Bracing Chill to a nearby ally, up to 6 times.
  • On My Way Icon On My Way passively increases your Versatility and Speed.
  • Woundbinder Icon Woundbinder causes your healing effects to have a chance to increase your Haste for 12 seconds. Healing lower health targets will grant more Haste.

2.2.4. C Tier

  • Ephemeral Recovery Icon Ephemeral Recovery gives you a significant amount of Mana back whenever you go below 20% Mana. Can only happen once every 3 minutes.
  • Savior Icon Savior makes your heals on targets below 50% health have a chance to heal for an additional amount.

As with the Outer Ring traits, many of the Middle Ring traits also only trigger from damage abilities which limits the number of traits that benefit our raid healing. These damage dealing traits have been left off this list.

2.3. Inner Ring Traits for Holy Priest

2.3.1. S Tier

  • Auto-Self-Cauterizer Icon Auto-Self-Cauterizer grants you a chance, when taking damage, to self-heal for a large amount and remove most bleed effects as well as slowing nearby enemies by 30% for 5 seconds. This trait is only obtainable through crafting Engineering goggles.
  • Resounding Protection Icon Resounding Protection causes you to gain an absorb shield every 30 seconds.
  • Personal Absorb-o-Tron Icon Personal Absorb-o-Tron grants you a chance, when taking damage, to gain a large absorb shield for up to 1 minute. This trait is only obtainable through crafting Engineering goggles.

2.3.2. A Tier

  • Impassive Visage Icon Impassive Visage heals you when you take damage. It can not occur more often than every 6 seconds.
  • Sanctum Icon Sanctum grants you a 10-second absorb when you cast Fade Icon Fade.

2.3.3. B Tier

  • Twist Magic Icon Twist Magic can situationally provide reasonable healing depending Dispel Magic Icon Dispel Magic on how often you are successfully dispelling during the encounter.
  • Self Reliance Icon Self Reliance causes you to be healed every 3 seconds while no enemies are within 12 yards of you.
  • Vampiric Speed Icon Vampiric Speed causes you to self-heal and gain Speed for 6 seconds whenever an enemy you damaged dies.

2.3.4. C Tier

  • Azerite Fortification Icon Azerite Fortification heals you when you are stunned, immobilized, or knocked back.
  • Bulwark of the Masses Icon Bulwark of the Masses causes you to gain a moderate absorb shield when surrounded by 4 or more enemies, but can only occur once every 15 seconds.
  • Longstrider Icon Longstrider increases your movement speed by a percentage of your highest secondary stat, with a maximum movement speed gain limit.

3. Azerite Traits Details and Rotation Changes for Holy Priest

At this stage no Azerite traits have an impact on your gameplay style.

It is very important that you do not actively change your gameplay in raids to suit Azerite traits as this can result in a significant decrease in your healing under nearly all circumstances.

3.1. Stacking Azerite Traits

Some parts of Azerite traits stack if you manage to get the same trait on different Azerite items. As a general rule to know if a particular part of that trait stacks or not: Values of traits that scale with item level stack, those that do not, do not stack.

Below lists the Trait components that typically stack.

  • Stat increases - For example "increases your intellect by 123".
  • Healing effects or increases - For example "heals for 123".
  • Absorb effects - For example "absorbs 123 damage".
  • Damage effects - For example "deals 123 damage".

Below lists the Trait components that typically do not stack.

  • Cooldown reduction - For example "reduces the cooldown of your ability by 2 seconds".
  • Duration of buffs and effects - For example "gain an effect for 2 seconds"
  • Number of stacks - For example "stacks up to 2 times"
  • Number of targets - For example "affects up to 2 nearby allies"

An example of this is the Word of Mending Icon Word of Mending trait. The healing component scales up with item level so multiple traits would stack increasing the healing done by Prayer of Mending Icon Prayer of Mending, however the 2 second reduction to Holy Word: Sanctify Icon Holy Word: Sanctify does not scale up with item level, so this portion does not stack.

4. List of Holy Priest-specific Azerite Traits

Here are the Holy Priest-specific Azerite traits found on the Outer Ring.

Below are the Holy Priest-specific Azerite traits found on the Inner Ring.

  • Sanctum Icon Sanctum grants you a 10-second absorb when you cast Fade Icon Fade.
  • Twist Magic Icon Twist Magic heals you and 4 allies when you successfully dispel with Dispel Magic Icon Dispel Magic.
  • Death Denied Icon Death Denied absorbs a small amount of damage after casting Leap of Faith Icon Leap of Faith on someone, and increases the recharge rate of Leap of Faith's cooldown while the absorb holds.
