1. Foreword

On this page, you will find information on how to play your Fire Mage in Battle for Azeroth (BfA). Because the new expansion is still in beta, this guide is simply here to help you perform better in the beta or to give you a sneak peek into what the new expansion has in store for you if you plan to play Fire Mage.

2. Fire Mage Base Mechanics Changes in BfA

The Fire spec has not received major changes in BfA. The spec still revolves around getting as many instant Pyroblast Icon Pyroblast casts off as possible, by chaining Critical Strikes for Hot Streak Icon Hot Streak. Below we have listed the main changes.

3. Fire Mage Baseline Abilities — Changes in BfA

  • Due to the removal of the Artifact trait Pre-Ignited Icon Pre-Ignited and losing the effect of our Tier 21 bonus, Combustion Icon Combustion is a lot shorter. Depending on how many traits a Fire Mage had in Legion, Combustion will be reduced from 16-19 seconds to 10 seconds.
  • Arcane Intellect Icon Arcane Intellect has been added, giving the Mage a raid-wide buff.
  • Remove Curse Icon Remove Curse has been added, giving the Mage additional utility by being able to dispel Curses.

4. The BfA Fire Mage Talent Tree

BFA Fire Talent Tree

The Fire Mage talent tree has had some of its existing talents removed to make place for some of the legendary effects from Legion. Besides that, a couple of talents have been moved around a bit to give the player more choices.

4.1. Level 15

  • Firestarter Icon Firestarter is unchanged.
  • Pyromaniac Icon Pyromaniac is unchanged.
  • Searing Touch Icon Searing Touch has been added. This is the same effect as the Legion legendary Koralon's Burning Touch Icon Koralon's Burning Touch, just a bit weaker. It allows the Mage great mobility and a nice DPS boost when the enemy is below 30% Health, by making Scorch Icon Scorch do a lot more damage and be a guaranteed Critical Strike.

4.2. Level 30

4.3. Level 45

The level 45 talents are unchanged.

4.4. Level 60

  • Flame On Icon Flame On is unchanged.
  • Alexstrasza's Fury Icon Alexstrasza's Fury is unchanged.
  • Phoenix Flames Icon Phoenix Flames has been taken from the Legion Artifact and added to the level 60 talent row. It deals decent damage (especially on multiple targets), but more importantly, it is always a Critical Strike, causing Heating Up Icon Heating Up.

4.5. Level 75

The level 75 talents are unchanged.

4.6. Level 90

4.7. Level 90

  • Kindling Icon Kindling is unchanged.
  • Pyroclasm Icon Pyroclasm has been added. This is mostly the same effect as the Legion legendary Marquee Bindings of the Sun King Icon Marquee Bindings of the Sun King. Every time you consume a Hot Streak Icon Hot Streak, there is a 15% chance to cause your next non-instant Pyroblast Icon Pyroblast to do 300% more damage. Different from the legendary, the talent stacks up to 2 times, meaning you can hold onto a proc when cooldowns are coming back up soon.
  • Meteor Icon Meteor is unchanged.

4.8. BfA Fire Mage Talent Setup

The below talent setup is a good baseline single target setup to get you started on the beta.

5. Fire Mage Azerite Traits

Azerite Traits are the new version of the Artifact traits of Legion. They are a mix of small defensive, utility, and damage boosts. None of the Azerite traits so far have a strong influence on how you play, but this can change as more of them are released. As it stands right now, we will most likely be using sims in Battle for Azeroth to figure out the optimal traits.

There is currently one specific trait that will most likely change the rotation of Fire a bit, Preheat Icon Preheat. This trait increases the damage an enemy takes from Fire Blast Icon Fire Blast for 30 seconds. Depending on the exact tuning, you will most likely want to cast Scorch Icon Scorch at least once every 30 seconds, to keep this extra Fire Blast damage going.

6. Fire Mage Base Rotation in BfA

The below priority list is a good baseline for what a rotation in BfA may look like. Any tuning done to Fire could change the rotation below.

  1. Cast a non-instant Pyroblast Icon Pyroblast if Pyroclasm Icon Pyroclasm is up, unless Combustion Icon Combustion has less than 4 seconds remaining, or Combustion is available within the next 10 seconds, or Rune of Power Icon Rune of Power is available within the next 10 seconds.
  2. Cast Mirror Image Icon Mirror Image, if talented and Combustion is available.
  3. Cast Rune of Power, if Combustion is available.
  4. Cast Combustion, when you have a Rune of Power down.
  5. Cast Meteor Icon Meteor, if talented, and you have a Rune of Power down
  6. Cast Rune of Power if a second charge is available within 5 seconds.
  7. Cast Pyroblast when you have Hot Streak Icon Hot Streak.
  8. Cast Fire Blast Icon Fire Blast when you have Heating Up Icon Heating Up.
  9. Cast Dragon's Breath Icon Dragon's Breath to generate Heating Up if you have Alexstrasza's Fury Icon Alexstrasza's Fury talented, and you have a stack of Fire Blast ready.
  10. Cast Scorch Icon Scorch when Combustion is running, or you have to move and have no instant cast spells available, or you have Searing Touch Icon Searing Touch and the target is below 30% Health.
  11. Cast Fireball Icon Fireball to generate Heating Up.

7. Multi-Target Rotation for Fire Mage in BfA

When fighting 2 or 3 targets, you should stick to your single-target rotation. This is because of Mastery: Ignite Icon Mastery: Ignite automatically spreading to nearby targets.

When there are 4 or more targets, you should replace the instant-cast Pyroblast Icon Pyroblast from your single-target rotation with instant-cast Flamestrike Icon Flamestrike when you have Hot Streak Icon Hot Streak. If you have Living Bomb Icon Living Bomb talented, you should use it on cooldown.

When there are 6 or more targets (4 with Flame Patch Icon Flame Patch talented) you should replace Fireball Icon Fireball for Flamestrike Icon Flamestrike.
