Elemental Shaman DPS Azerite Traits/Powers and Armor — Battle for Azeroth (BfA) 8.2.5
This page details the strongest Azerite traits to choose when playing Elemental
Shaman in World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, Patch 8.2.5. If
you have not obtained the Heart of Azeroth yet, you will need to do so in
order to use the traits listed below. You can read through our
Heart
of Azeroth guide to find out how to obtain it.
For more information about how the new Essence system introduced in Patch 8.2 affects you, please refer to our Elemental Shaman essence page.
Choosing Azerite Gear as an Elemental Shaman
Your choice of Azerite Gear pieces will almost always come down to the item level first, and the traits that it has second. Note that the traits you will look at when choosing gear are the Outer Ring traits, as these are the ones with the biggest impact on your gameplay.
The general rule is that if an item is a 15+ item level upgrade over another
item, you should use it. If the difference between the two items is less than
15 item levels, then you should choose the one with the better Outer Ring
trait. As we said, though, this is a general rule and there are exceptions; for
example, if you are comparing a very bad trait ( Arcane Heart)
to a very good one (
Igneous Potential). It is nearly
impossible to take every single variable into account without using a tool like
Raidbots to simulate the
difference for yourself.
It is worth noting that if the difference between the traits is very small, then the higher item level pick will be more desirable. Azerite pieces have a high amount of Stamina, increasing your maximum health. A tiny difference in that regard can be the difference between dying and surviving, so item level is almost always king.
Choosing Azerite Traits as an Elemental Shaman
In the sections that follow, we will look at the best traits to choose. While the traits are ordered by power, this order is not a very strict priority, but more of a guideline.
Outer Rings
The Outer Rings traits are the first ones you unlock, and they are the most important from a DPS perspective. You can see the simulation comparison of these traits here.
The new traits introduced in Patch 8.2 are all underwhelming and you can safely ignore them.
Igneous Potential is back to being a fantastic trait for single-target
with the new recommended talent setup, so aim to get 3 of these. It does nothing for your
AoE output, however.
Treacherous Covenant is an excellent all-around damage increase,
the downside should not matter much.
Blightborne Infusion is a powerful Critical Strike buff that
lasts for 14 seconds. This is simply a good all-around option, benefiting both
your single-target and AoE damage hugely. This is an excellent trait in any situation.
Natural Harmony is a strong trait, especially if you are using
Icefury.
Laser Matrix and
Archive of the Titans are
essentially mandatory traits to have on your gear when raiding in Uldir on any
difficulty. This is because having at least one of these traits will active
Reorigination Array, a passive effect that vastly increases your
highest secondary stat each week. Archive of the Titans is generally the best
one, but it is not very important which one you have, as long as you have at
least one in Uldir.
Middle Ring
The Middle Ring traits are generally weaker than the Outer Ring ones, but they are still important and must be chosen accordingly. You can see the simulation comparison of these traits here.
Overwhelming Power has the highest DPS potential of the traits
in this ring for every situation, but it will lose efficiency whenever you take damage,
which can be very often in some raid encounters. That being said, unless you are
constantly getting damaged it is far enough ahead that it is likely still best
in every situation.
Unstable Flames is a solid all-around trait.
Gutripper provides a solid damage increase for single-target,
second only to
Overwhelming Power. It is, however, weak for AoE/Cleave.
Heed My Call is another strong trait, although far below
Overwhelming Power
in single-target if you are not losing more than a few stacks. It provides good
stacked AoE, but Overwhelming Power remains the stronger trait even for these situations.
Inner Ring
The Inner Ring consists mostly of defensive or utility traits.
Longstrider is arguably the best "DPS" option in this tier. By
increasing your movement speed, it allows you to close gaps and dodge things
slightly faster.
Resounding Protection is an absorb shield that automatically
gets applied every 30 seconds. This is one of the best defensive traits to
have, as you will always be able to benefit from it.
Serene Spirit heals you when you cast
Astral Shift, and
again when its duration ends. This is a decent trait if you are struggling with
surviving unavoidable damage, but you will very often waste a large part of its
value.
Pack Spirit heals you while in
Ghost Wolf
form. This is a very niche trait that is however potentially useful on fights
like Vectis or G'huun.
Azerite Traits Rotation Changes and Details for Elemental Shaman
There is generally no rotation changes linked to Azerite Traits in most situations for Elemental Shamans.
If you are using Lava Shock (usually not a very desirable trait),
it becomes more desirable to hold onto
Earth Shock a little bit more
if priority adds are about to appear. This is fairly minor but can definitely help
pushing that extra bit of damage on Vectis/Fetid Devourer adds for example.
