General Information

On this page, we go over the Essence system in Patch 8.3 of World of Warcraft — Battle for Azeroth, and we tell you which are the best essences to use as Fire Mage, both for minor and major powers. Please refer to our Patch 8.3 Essence Guide for more information about the new essences introduced in Patch 8.3 and to our Essence guide for more general information about the Essence system and where Essences can be obtained from.

1.

Azerite Essences for Fire Mages

Introduced in Patch 8.2, Essences are unique items that drop from various forms of content. They are activated through your Heart of Azeroth Icon Heart of Azeroth, and they buff your character in various ways, depending on the Essences that are currently active.

For more information about essences, please check out the following:

What follows on this page will relate directly to how Essences affect this spec, since generic information is beyond the scope of this guide.

2.

Picking a Major Essence for Fire Mages

  • Memory of Lucid Dreams (Memory of Lucid Dreams Icon Memory of Lucid Dreams) is the best major essence.
  • Essence of the Focusing Iris (Focused Azerite Beam Icon Focused Azerite Beam) is the best major essence in heavy AoE situations, so you should consider using it in high AoE situations, like Mythic+, if your group is doing constant large AoE pulls. It is not worth taking Focusing Iris on cleave or smaller AoE pulls.
3.

Picking Minor Essences for Fire Mages

  • Breath of the Dying (Lethal Strikes Icon Lethal Strikes) should always be used as a minor essence (rank 3+ only), since it is top 3 in terms of raw DPS, and it also provides corruption resistance, allowing you to equip more corrupted items.
  • Worldvein Resonance (Lifeblood Icon Lifeblood) is one the best Minor powers, as long as at least a couple of other people in your raid also use it. If less than 3 people in your group use it, see next essence section.
  • Your final Minor slot can be a multitude of Essences. The Crucible of Flame (Ancient Flame Icon Ancient Flame) is the best remaining pure single-target Essence; however, it serves no AoE purpose. Conflict and Strife (Strife Icon Strife) and Essence of the Focusing Iris (Focused Energy Icon Focused Energy) are good hybrid essences, which makes them good for fights with both single-target and AoE/cleave phases. Finally, Purification Protocol (Purification Protocol Icon Purification Protocol) is a good option for AoE fights, such as Mythic+ or fights with constant adds. Generally speaking, you should use either Conflict and Strife or Focusing Iris as your final minor essence. If you did not pick Worldvein Resonance (Lifeblood Icon Lifeblood) as a minor essence, you can use both Conflict and Strife and Focusing Iris.
4.

Rotation Changes for Essences for Fire Mages

Most Essences should simply be activated on cooldown, outside of Combustion Icon Combustion and Rune of Power Icon Rune of Power. This is because Essences do not get the critical strike bonus from Combustion, nor the bonus damage from Rune of Power. AoE essences like Essence of the Focusing Iris (Focused Azerite Beam Icon Focused Azerite Beam) should be used on as many targets as possible. Below we have listed the Essences which are not simply "fire and forget" type of Essences, and how you should use them.

  • Memory of Lucid Dreams (Memory of Lucid Dreams Icon Memory of Lucid Dreams) should be used right before Combustion Icon Combustion to greatly increase damage output during Combustion, due to the extra Fire Blast Icon Fire Blasts. If you are running Rune of Power Icon Rune of Power, you should cast the Essence first, and then cast Rune of Power followed by the normal Combustion phase.
